Report: Commonwealth Stadium will be renamed “Kroger Field”

About an hour ago, UK sent out a notice about a press conference at 1 p.m. to announce a major corporate partnership, and since then, rumors have started to spread on Twitter about what it could be. By now, it’s common knowledge that the press conference will be related to the naming rights of Commonwealth Stadium, and according to Patrick Loney — who first broke news of corporate naming rights a few weeks back — says the stadium will be renamed Kroger Field:

Well, alright. Let’s go Krogering.

In fairness, who had heard of BigBlueBanter before Matt called them out? They’re nobodies right now, maybe someday they’ll be on the same level as some of the other major sites but they’re nowhere near it yet

So will we have a “CM Newton Field” that is inside “Kroger Field” now?

    • SalsaKat
      10:55 am May 1, 2017 Permalink

I”m hoping it’s “Kroger Field at Commonwealth Stadium”. CM Newton has no business having his name on anything football related and I’d infinitely prefer a corporate name to a basketball AD who did everything he could to let football wither and die.

Probably would still refer to it as “Kroger Field” though for marketing reasons, kind of how Mississippi State refers to their facility as “Davis Wade Stadium” even though it was known as Scott Field for decades and is still technically “Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field”.

I dislike that the name will be changed, but money is everything. It will help us recruit better players, keep better coaching, and have the best facilities. Teams with the most money often correlates with the amount of wins. i.e. Kentucky Basketball

the athletic association does not have enough damn money – they have to sell out to Kroger?
Maybe an audit of where it all goes is in order. i suspect salaries for the genius who came up with this is a big part of it.

    • PillsburyThrowboy

      Really?

UK Athletics has a brand new soccer stadium, softball stadium, track field/stadium, renovated football stadium, new football facility, state-of-the-art basketball locker rooms and a baseball stadium in the works.

On top of this, you have coaching salaries, player living and medical costs, equipment, etc.

You are worried where the money is? I think it’s pretty obvious, it’s going back to everyone involved in the athletic department.

have you counted the MILLIONS that come in from so many sources – and we have a bunch of “administrators” running that corporation? this is a situation where no one has an incentive to save – i dare say there is a lot of /opportunity for waste.
having said that, it’s not my problem. Go name everything. who really gives a sh– as long as they win.

Matt has already talked about this multiple times on-air but here you go:

JMI paid UK athletics millions in their last deal for the right to sell naming rights. UK has already received this money. Whatever money comes from Kroger goes to JMI, not UK. So, unfortunately for your argument, no money from this deal goes to anyone’s salary at UK.

    • UKBlue1982

The naming rights money goes to JMI, who purchased the rights to shop it from UK.

Apparently not necessary enough for any other SEC program to sell corporate naming rights to their fball stadium (and only one bball arena, USC).

    • Eazy

Florida basketball sold the naming rights to their arena. And they’ve had more success in basketball than we have in football.

      @grofacekillah

We are behind every other SEC program outside of Vanderbilt and Miss State. We have to catch up somehow.

    • Eazy
      3:14 pm May 1, 2017 Permalink

We are ahead of Missouri too. And we obviously dominate basketball. In overall sports we are now ahead of almost every school now. #8 in the directors cup. Only Florida is ahead of us. And we are top 15 in revenue nationally.

      @ pillsburythrowboy

We are wasting our time talking about it because it is up to JMI (sold our soul, up to them). Either way it looks bush league.

    • Booby Petrino
      11:59 am May 1, 2017 Permalink

Funny how when it comes to sponsorship we need to be like other SEC schools and pass on the money. But when it comes to rewarding our players with rings even for just making a bowl like other SEC schools do, we need to act like we’re better than them and not buy rings. It’s like fans think we’re some football powerhouse now lol

    • Eazy
      3:33 pm May 1, 2017 Permalink

UK is only going to get better too. Just look at the new facilities all around. We are a top 10 athletics program nationally and passing by most SEC schools. I don’t have a problem with the name.

Sounds like they put a lot of time and effort in coming up with that name. Yikes! I just can’t see myself saying to someone – “Yeah, I’m headed over to Kroger Field for the game today.” Can we not at least make a little more descriptive and throw in the word Kentucky, Wildcat, or Cats, or something?

    Sad day for Kentucky football.

Corporate names take away the nostalgia of amateur athletics. I’ve always been proud that U.K. has had stadiums named for someone that really meant something to Kentucky. That is part of why I was glad they decided to remodel Rupp Arena instead of building a new arena. What would it have been named then? Rupp Arena and Commonwealth Stadium stand on the history of great programs and a great state! Our courts, fields, arenas, and stadiums all are named for our strong history.

I guess it’s always better than the KFC YUM! Center…

    • bluetide

The KFC YUM Center name sucks, but that arena is in-freaking-credible. We have GOT to get Rupp up to snuff BADLY. Getting rid of Big Bertha was a start.

I am horrified that UK felt they needed money so badly that they would sell the naming rights to any one. Who knew about this? Who decided it was okay? Why in the world would they do this?

The football program more than pays for itself, but maybe this will increase the money given to the unprofitable sports. Will this money help to finance the new baseball stadium, or example?

    • theWilkman

What’s the word on how long the naming rights will last? Personally, I don’t mind it and most everyone will keep calling it Commonwealth Stadium, so what’s the harm in that? If you got paid $10 million+ to change your first name for 10 years, you know you would go around being called just about anything. It makes financial sense, and as long as the Athletics Department continues to send money to the school (2/3 of the total cost of the new science building) and doesn’t get engaged in questionable financial activities (YUM! Center), we should continue to be thankful that athletics isn’t a drain on taxpayer money in KY.

But that only holds is the debt levels incurred by so much construction isn’t crazy high. Anybody have any figures on that? Just on the Athletics side, not the University finances.
