Quick Notes From Day 1 of Fall Camp

IMG_20140804_082145

–  The best sign from the first day of practice was the chatter on the defensive side of the ball.  Many are worried about the play at linebacker, but Stoops’ was impressed with their communication, giving credit to their extra work with film in the offseason.

–  Speaking of putting in offseason work, these guys look a LOT better.  CJ Johnson and Matt Elam stick out immediately.  I wasn’t sure how Elam would fare against the big boys, but Stoops said that Elam was a standout performer today.  They didn’t wear full pads, but that’s a great sign to see.

–  Ryan Flannigan just got to campus last Friday, but he’s ready to go.  Stoops and Eliot acknowledged that he has a long way to go, but Flannigan repeated over and over, “I’m staying in coach’s pocket.”

–  TreVaughn Paschal is another candidate to start at MLB.  Paschal played a lot at the WLB last season before injuries kept him out through the Spring.  He was anxious leading up to today, but it felt great to get back on the field.

–  Stoops’ eyes went wide when discussing a dropped interception, a point of emphasis this year for the Cats D.  Despite the missed opportunity, Stoops’ is encouraged by the play of JUCO transfer AJ Stamps.

If you want more, head over to WLAP where I’m talking turkey with Tom Leach and Lee K. Howard.

So who threw the interception. Really get tired of the media just being told what the coaches want you to hear. Elam looked great, okay. Who threw the ball that was dropped.

    Why so many secrets?

Let the media determine who looked great, not get the coaches biased opinion.

Secret, we aren’t telling you who threw the pass. My guess it was Barker since its hush hush.

Barker was also on the grassy knoll.

Really? This is your complaint? We play an Air Raid offense, so our QB’s probably throw hundreds of passes each, and you need to know who threw a practice interception? And you think it is a secret? Maybe it is just irrelevant. Do you need to know how many times our kickers missed a FG in practice too? Gosh, they sure are keeping that a secret too.

It’s the FIRST PRACTICE !!! they aren’t focusing on the negatives. They are focusing on the positives. They’re looking to see what players are doing the right things. It doesn’t matter if someone makes mistakes. It’s better to get them out now and work on them later.

Maybe read the story above ukjaybrat. Doesn’t appear to be a story on positives. Maybe you know more!

      Alyson,

Didn’t say the story was one of positives, I said the first practice is looking for positives. Which is why the negatives weren’t being focused on by the coaching staff, which is why they didn’t report (for example) who threw the interception… my point is that OP was complaining about something he should not have been complaining about.

UK doesn’t need to practice throwing and dropping INTs, already know how.

Keep the football camp notes coming!!! Man, been waiting for football season! News on Elam is encouraging. Word on him from high school was a little lazy. He’s a local boy. Hope he does great! Heard also that he was pretty smart! Give em room to grow guys. In the words of AI, we talking practice here! Practice! Not games. Practice! Just practice man! We not talking wins and losses here! Practice! We talking practice….

Stoops needs to lay off the Ale8 and moon pies. He’s starting to reach Bret Bielema type proportions.
