Quarterback Nik Scalzo Suffers Significant Injury in Scrimmage

Kentucky could not escape the second scrimmage of the preseason without an injury.

Mark Stoops revealed Saturday afternoon that Nik Scalzo suffered a knee injury during the action. Scalzo was seen being carted away from Kroger Field.

“I’m a little bit concerned about Nik Scalzo,” Stoops said. “We’ll see what the situation is with Nik. I feel for him right now.”

Scalzo injured the same knee last fall. He was cleared to play in June after recovering from an ACL tear. The timing is not ideal. Yesterday a documentary on his high school senior season, QB1:Beyond the Lights, premiered on Netflix.

That doesn’t sound good at all. Hopefully it’s one of those things that look worse than it was.

“The timing is not ideal?” Not sure what that has to do with the young man blowing out his knee. Is the timing EVER ideal?

Yeah very bad wording, but I think it was more a comment on how Nik has had a pretty cool 24 hrs with his show coming out and then to be brought down to earth by this. More ironic than “not ideal” considering the spotlight the show put on his injury.

Are you a doctor or do you just enjoy watching kids get hurt?

Terrible news, but he’s still young so he’ll heal up quick (again). And he’s a QB…I mean I’m only 60% sure Tom Brady has knees and he has 6 rings and gizzel at home. Good luck kid!

Why allow the qb’s to be tackled in scrimmages!?

Could have been a non-contact injury.

Dang, so sorry Nic. Get well young man.

This isn’t meant to be critical of the player, his doctors, or UK but I never understood the rush to get Scalzo back. In 2017 a friend’s son had an ACL tear repaired and the surgeon made it clear that full recovery, without serious risk of reinjuring the same knee or the other knee, would take more than a year. Best of luck to no. 2.
