POLL: Who do you want Kentucky to play Week 1?

We are three hours from the SEC revealing each team’s season opener ahead of tonight’s schedule release. While we wait, let’s do what we do best: speculate. Who do you want Kentucky to face in Week 1? Here are the contenders:

  • Florida (Away)
  • South Carolina (Home)
  • Auburn (Away)
  • Vanderbilt (Home)
  • Missouri (Away)
  • Tennessee (Away)
  • Mississippi State (Home)
  • Georgia (Home)
  • Alabama (Away)
  • Ole Miss (Home)

A few different approaches:

Bring on Bama

Starting the season against the league’s ultimate powerhouse on their home turf may seem daunting, but hear me out. Even though they’re Alabama, it’s the Crimson Tide’s first game too, and they’re led by Mac Jones, who filled in for an injured Tua Tagovailoa last season, but is far from a seasoned vet. The former UK commit will be up against a veteran Kentucky defense, considered one of the best in the league. If Kentucky loses, well, it’s Alabama, but if they win, IT’S ALABAMA. What a way to start things off.

Ease on in

Kentucky usually has a few weeks to work out the kinks before starting the SEC schedule. Not this year. So, why not ease in as best you can with one of the league’s weaker teams, like Vanderbilt or Ole Miss, which will both travel to Kroger Field? On the flip side, losing to one of these teams early on would be a major bummer.

Catch new coaches early

Of the ten teams Kentucky will play this season, three are led by new coaches: Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri; Mike Leach, Mississippi State; and Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss. I know nothing about Drinkwitz, but considering that game is in Columbia, I’d rather have Mississippi State or Ole Miss at home. Both are led by offensive-minded hot heads in Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin, and without spring football — or in some cases, the weapons necessary to run their systems — it’s going to take them some time to find their footing. I like a veteran team like Kentucky at home in those scenarios.

SEC East statement

Kentucky Football’s coaching staff has long said that beating Georgia is the next step for the program to take. The Cats get Georgia at home this year. The Bulldogs are a top five, arguably top three team. Even if the season has to be cut short due to the coronavirus, a win over Georgia would be a mighty big feather to put in the cap. Also, like Alabama, there’s no shame in losing to the Bulldogs.

Earlier today, the SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic tweeted then deleted some cryptic comments about the Iron Bowl taking place in Week 1. If that happens, the league could go all rivalries in order to start the season with a bang, meaning Kentucky would likely head to Tennessee. Kentucky’s record against the Vols in Knoxville is…not great to say the least, but with limited fans in Neyland Stadium, maybe this is the year. Beating Rocky Top would be a heck of a way to start things off.

Your turn.

We typically don’t play great our first game of the season so I would prefer a game like SC to get our feet wet.

I’d rather get Bama first before their coaches have any tape on the offense.

Alabama has been starting their seasons with a top non conference games of late. They have steam rolled them all. Sorry, don’t want them the first game of the season.

Not necessarily. They opened with Duke and Louisville the last two years. The best time for UK is to catch them early in the season.

I’m always amazed by the lack of proofreading on here. Not even the title can be looked at?

Mrs. TT-You’re great, but please fix your headline.

    I say bring on Alabama.

First game of the season, ‘Bama would be planning to work out the kinks and would likely overlook the Cats as a “warm-up” game. We have a lot of significant returning players that I believe can take what Bama throws at them, at least for a little while.

Also, if we lose there are still 9 more games to lick our wounds and move on. It matters less how you start a season that how you finish it.

Bama! They won’t have film on us, they have a unseasoned QB, it’s their first game too and with Bama we have nothing to loose but lots to gain.

Why would you want to start the season with a big loss? Let’s get some momentum before we go down there.
