Patrick Towles says today was fun but “there’s a lot more fun to be had”

Patrick Towles couldn’t have asked for a better debut. Towles passed for 377 yards and one touchdown, and added in another touchdown on a 30-yard run. I asked Patrick if he expected one of his first touchdowns of the season to come off a run and he said no, but was pleased either way. “I didn’t, but if that’s the way it works, that’s the way it works,” he said. (By the way, Jared Lorenzen predicted that.)

Towles was superb, showing poise under pressure that made his head coach proud. “He was very poised and he made very good decisions,” Stoops said. “He’s been like that for sometime.” Like a true leader, Towles credited his entire unit for a good day. “I was sharp, the whole offense was sharp. The receivers were good, offensive line was good, so it was a big combination,” Towles said. However, like a true perfectionist, he noted a few mistakes. “There were just a couple of simple mistakes that I made and I know that I made them, but I fixed them, which was good.” Nitpicking much?

Towles said that while today’s win was fun, “there’s a lot more fun to be had.” However, for a quarterback that’s patiently waited for his moment and put in the hard work, it’s hard not to bask a bit in the afterglow. “This is a feeling that I haven’t had in a while and I’m glad to have it back,” Towles said, smiling.

Pat Towles is the man at quarterback. He won the battle and we all see why. His poise in the pocket and decision making looks terrific. I know this was against a really poor team but the experience and confidence he gets from these first two games will do him well in tougher games to come.

Any chance a player has a stroke on the field during the next game?

UTM will got well over 200 yds. rushing. Not well played on defense despite the turnovers.

Poor quarterback pressure, pushed around by a small offensive line and the great defensive ends did squat today. Where is Bud and Z ? AWOL IT SEEMS!

Well the Cats got another game to improve on the shortcomings of this one before SEC play. Lets hope it is enough to take the Gators down.

A feel good win over a really overmatched team. Cats should have won by 60 points but the defense needs work badly. Offense looks good but the O line could have been better.

2nd team D saw most of the reps in the 2nd half. Let’s not get too carried away with the UTM offense stats. UK D wasn’t dominant, but definitely looks improved. Keep on developing these young players and recruiting at the same or higher level and UK will get there.

The 2 scores and most of UTM offense came in the 4th quarter when UK literally emptied the bench. 3rd string players on the field. Also note that UK’s defense played straight up all day and did not give different looks or blitz packages. We could have beaten this team 80 to 0 so don’t get caught up on UTM’s offense when in reality the game was over at half.

    I told ya we’re fixed.
When the quarterback comes out and humbly? admits he was sharp, well, doesn’t that just say about all there is to say?
Nice crowd, beautiful day, next week another route.
    We’re fixed!

Hold on sports fans, 2mites is exactly right. Our defense really does concern me and it should concern you. Against even just a little better competition this game might have been 48-45. Looks like we will be able to score this year, but if our defense does not really step up their game we might be in for another LONG season, let’s hope not. GO CATS!

The only position that concerns me currently in the linebacker position. Other than that, I think our defense is solid. I was never concerned in this game because we dominated on both sides of the ball. We could have beaten this team 80-0 but chose to play our third string players which I believe only helps our team build depth. Our defense only blitzed 3 times yesterday and that was pretty deliberate by Coach Stoops. This was a feel good win for the players, coaches, and fan and a small taste of the weapons we have on both sides of the ball. We have several players that our the real deal. Loved the one handed interception by A.J. Stamps and understand why he is your free safety. The guy can play.

There are numerous duplicate uniform numbers. It’s allowed as long as the two are not in the game at the same time, so usually one will be defense or special teams, the other will be offense.

Towles looks like an NFL caliber QB. The competition today wasn’t great. However, he has a cannon for an arm, and I was surprised how accurate he was. Couldn’t believe how fast he was when he ran in the 30 yard TD. Reminds me of Greg Jones from Arkansas about 5 years ago. Not as fast as Jones, but a much better passer. I know Drew Barker has a lot of potential, but I would be shocked if–at least right now–he is even close to Towles. Wow. BTW, its amazing how much better the run game looks when we actually have a QB that can sling the deep ball.

Good day to be a Big Blue football fan. I am concerned about our defense, especially against ‘normal’ competition. We will need to improve defense-ably next week to avoid a surprise. Towles sure looked awesome today. Looks like we will be able to score points this year, so let’s keep the other guy out of the end zone and we will win ’em all! GO BIG BLUE…GREAT GAME TODAY!

I saw SEC talent level today, and it was not the OTHER team! I loved the enthusiasm and effort on both sides of the ball, especially guys like Heard, Bone, Horton, and Stamps! Bodes well for 2014 and beyond! I look forward to seeing more of the gridiron Cats!

Any time you can hang 59 points on a team predicted to finish 5th in the OVC you know you’ve got an offense that will get noticed.
Wonder if we will start mailing out toys, flyers, gifts with our quarterback’s image to hype him in the Heisman race?
He admitted himself he was ‘sharp’.
    Humble ain’t he?
