Pac-12 players threatening to opt out if league doesn’t offer “protections and benefits”

Football players from multiple Pac-12 schools are threatening to opt out of the 2020 season if the league doesn’t offer various protections and benefits.

In a text message obtained by ESPN, the players are in negotiations with the league regarding concerns about racial injustice, their safety during the coronavirus pandemic, and securing fair compensation. If their demands are not met, they plan to sit out during preseason camps and games this fall.

According to the report, the movement involves potentially hundreds of players from Cal, Oregon, Stanford, and UCLA, among other schools, with the group set to make a public “statement of unity” and a list of their demands in the coming days.

The Athletic published a screen shot of the “Pac-12 Football Unity” statement, which includes the following “protections and benefits” in their demands:

  • Ensure safe play during COVID-19
  • Fight racial injustice
  • Secure economic rights & fair compensation
  • Protect all sports
  • Obtain long term health insurance

In the Pac-12’s statement to ESPN, the league said it has not yet heard rom the group.

“Neither the Conference nor our university athletics departments have been contacted by this group regarding these topics,” the statement read. “We support our student-athletes using their voice and have regular communications with our student-athletes at many different levels on a range of topics. As we have clearly stated with respect to our fall competition plans, we are, and always will be, directed by medical experts, with the health, safety and well being of our student athletes, coaches and staff always the first priority. We have made it clear that any student athlete who chooses not to return to competition for health or safety reasons will have their scholarship protected.”

On Friday, the Pac-12 announced a 10-game, conference-only fall schedule, with games set to begin on Sept. 26. Teams will play five home and five road games, with the Pac-12 championship set for mid-December.

So what exactly are they expecting the conference to do to fight racial injustice that isn’t already being done out there? That’s a fairly general demand.

It would appear it’s not all about safety; sounds like a ransom note. This one is really simple…just tell them no.

Agree with you 100%!! Tell these young men we don’t negotiate since your scholarship in a non-negotiable agreement and you not employees in a union. Either play this season or don’t. We have other players wanting to play. End of story.

I’m sure other players would be happy to take their place. Kick them to the curb.

This is probably not the place, but I am about tired of the racial stuff. I am from London(worked for government in Bell county for 12 years… and quit because of the crooked politicians, a democrat was the worst….what about that…anyone ever heard of lake mistake) I have lived in Fl for 20 years now and have few friends because…. I don’t like many people. Two of my best friends in FL are black. One a fine citizen and the other has at least 4 kids by 3 and dont work.

These blacks are wanting to talk about how 100’s,,,, of years ago…i can count….how us whites have done them wrong…. im just now starting to get pissed. The Africans, through history and still…. go ape shit from time to time(or just regular, like they have done for 1,000s of years) and kill, chop up the neighboring tribes. There was a time when they found out the if they didn’t kill them…. they could sell them. I may be wrong but I think lots of the blacks in America would have been chopped up or speared….dead if not for the slave trade…. lots of the blacks here in America… their ancestry would have ended if not for the slave trade….. but if they have a problem…. send them back

Lmao. I think you dont have friends because people dont like you. Your black “friends” probably laugh when u mention them as a friend. You are a disgrace, pos racist. White black purple yellow were being represented. White people are tired of people like you as well. Take a long boat ride my friend! I promise you wont be missed!

I’d bet a thousand bucks this guy has zero black friends. It’s 2020 and he’s out here literally pulling the “I can’t be racist, I have black friends” bs so many people do. Just because you stood next to a black guy in line at Costco and you held your tongue long enough to keep from calling him the n word doesn’t make him your friend. You’re also in Florida, lol. You can’t turn in any news source without hearing about some white tag zombie from Florida eating bath salts and seeking their children for drug money. Quit acting like it’s only black folks that have faults. We all do.
