Oscar Combs Says Football Team Will be More Unified in 2016

dm_130417_ncf_cc_sec

Its Christmas, which means time with family and friends, celebrating the birth of Jesus and giving out Football scoop…at least in the Oscar Combs house. Tonight he went to Twitter and gave some Football knowledge, which is worth sharing:

Had UK official tell me today he is convinced fans will see a much different UK team next fall after major shift in team leadership. The official said there were major internal bickering created by some players Stoops inherited from Joker Phillips staff. He was very blunt. Said to expect team unity, especially with incoming ’16 recruits. Bad guys no longer in leadership roles. He did not specify individuals. Will not name the official, but I can assure you this info came from a person with complete knowledge & understanding of football situation. You should not try to read any “particular” player who has recently left the program as a player with whom the official was referring to.

So there you have it. The man, the myth, the legend, Oscar Combs says that there were problems in the locker and they will be better in 2016. With that knowledge, we wish you good tidings of comfort and joy.

Not buying this. Joker’s been gone for a while. Can’t place the blame on him or his “players” in year three of a new staff. There weren’t too many of Joker’s players left in “leadership roles”. Perhaps the staff should have taken on the leadership roles. Unless of course these bad apples were carrying our team and actually tried. But it does look like our new OC is getting on the same page with our current state of the program down 28-0 against San Diego St.

    • Yeah, when I tuned in it was 35-0 and very quickly became 42-0 when UC’s QB threw a pick 6 to a lineman.

However, as I posted the other day, he was the RB coach at Auburn when they had GREAT running backs like Ronnie Brown, Carnell Williams and Kenny Irons. Hopefully he’ll be the right choice if he does get the job. We’re in big trouble if Drew doesn’t work out now that both the other QB’s are gone.

    • “He” being Eddie Gran that is.

Did you really believe it would take very long for them to crank up the kool-aid machine again? It’s a hilarious show that runs on an annual loop. Excuse me while I go pop some pop corn and pour another Crown and get ready to sit back and enjoy the show.

Towles, Swindle, Josh Forrest? Either way who cares, one thing that was certain was this team had too much inner turmoil and Stoops and co should have found a way to curb all that crap.

Eastern beat their ass all over the field, the only way I can see that happening is their coaching some way caused it. I hate to say it but if Stoops were at Florida, I would say he is a plug, never going to do much with him – worse than Muschamp. Stoops’s and staff have some major flaws and I hope he can recognize and adjust.

He is OK at running his mouth/ coach speak, but how do you fup the recruiting classes/ tallent that he has so much that you get beat by Eastern.

Eastern Kentucky played good but cats still won the game. Now with the problem gone pat, I see cats making a bowl next season.

Another attempt to save season ticket sales.
Jokers players fault? Please. That’s laughable. So they were bad talent AND bad locker room comrades? And the staff has now figured it out? And the ’16 recruits (that will have little impact for at least two years), are here to guarantee saving of the day? Incredible. Merry Christmas all!

Stoop’s recruits were told to quit acting like a bunch of gangster wannabes off the field. It didn’t set well with them.
The wannabe gangsters won out and are now large and in charge of the football team.

Count me in the group of not buying this. I will believe it when I see it. It’s been Stoops’ recruits that have had most of the off-the-field problems and immaturity issues. I’m not going to pretend like I have inside info on what goes on in the locker room, but if it’s true that certain “Joker” players have been causing most of the issues, then why be so quick to fire Dawson when he didn’t really recruit any of these guys (Joker’s or Stoops’)? Meanwhile Eliot, Schlarman, and Brumbaugh continue to get a pass despite horrible coaching for three straight years, but I guess that’s the fault of Joker’s players? None of this makes any damn sense! And if Gran is indeed the OC we’re hiring, then I am very disappointed and I don’t see much changing next year.

The first two years of us being awful really don’t count because we literally had no good players. These guys are football coaches not magicians; they can’t just magically make bad players good esp in the SEC.

I get not airing dirty laundry in public & not throwing kids under the bus, but this slow drip drip drip of there were major issues within the locker room; yea Stoops should have admitted & addressed this as soon as the season was over. Trying to change a culture isn’t easy & you’re going to hit a ton of pot holes & have growing pains along the way but: issues in the locker room, disorganization, hiring the wrong OC, the young kids ie Drew out doing stupid things, WR’s not being able to do something as simple as catching the ball, a QB that threw the ball behind, over or too far in front of WR’s, this is truly UK football.

Not that I’m happy about this last season and taking up for Stoops but without looking anything up there were still joker guys around. Next year there may still be some and if any red shirted their first year there maybe some the year after. We are talking about building a football program not rebuilding as a lot of people put it, fan wise football has always had a good following but the on the field production has been a joke for 50yrs. Brooks didn’t start getting us in to bowl games till the schedule was fluffed for him to do so. I know I got a little off track there but there was a division on this team and it was between jokers players and stoops players.

Another QB transferring, ONE scholarship QB in the SEC with a true freshman as a Back-up and now the possibility of hiring an OC that just got beat 42-7 after being behind 42-0 late in the 4Q??? What a complete train-wreck of a football program. Anyone thinking next years team will win more than 4 games is delusional. Southern MIss will start UK’s season with an embarrassing loss. WHY would any good recruit want to come and play in this dumpster fire? This is beyond P-I-T-I-F-U-L.

Well it didn’t help matters to Cincy that they were without their starting QB for the bowl game. I believe he was a senior and wasn’t too bad either. So they used a back up in the game.

San Diego St. used a backup freshman quarterback too with less game experience. But he still took it to Cincy. Should we say then that in order for Gran’s offense to work, he MUST have an elite quarterback?

Chill out on Oscar– he is a KY legend. It’s Christmas for God’s sake.

As far as the article goes, I want to believe in Stoops and still hold out hope, but I agree that blaming the older players seems like scapegoating. I listened to the KSR interview with Stoops and his thoughts on player accountability and having them taking responsibility. To me it is like being a parent– you talk to your kids about behaving the right way and then they test you (Boom quitting the team, Barker, Baker, and company with their pellet guns and fighting in Richmond). As far as we can tell they were not really held accountable for their actions. Once you promise consequences and don’t deliver, kids realize that they can get over on you and that the talk of accountability is nothing more than talk. That is a good way to lose your team and create chaos/locker room issues. Gotta have some balls and enforce discipline- even if it means sitting your most talented players.

I like Stoops and I want him to succeed, but I’m not buying this. The younger guys are the ones that quit on the team, not “Joker’s recruits”. Even if true, I’m not sure this team has the talent yet to stay competitive with the big programs.

The comments made by Towels after his departure as much as validate what Combs is saying.

Stoops took over this train wreck of a program, with a bunch of train wreck fans who do not have a real good grasp on reality (if the shoe fits, wear it). No way UK starts beating all SEC teams and running the table like some here think that should by recruiting 2 classes ranked very good nationally, but at or near the bottom of the SEC recruiting rankings.

Regardless the inner turmoil which we know is true (the rumors have been rampant for months now) this UK team came a few plays short of beating Florida (SEC runner up) and Auburn. Had the ball bounced a different way all you Monday morning wannabe QB’s wouldn’t be so critical of Stoops. I for one am glad he’s here and hope he stays long enough to change a culture he did not create, but must deal with.

Hey, at least the SEC is a soft football conference..

If this is true, its an unambiguous indictment on the coaching staff’s inability to control player for 3+ years since Joker’s departure. Stoops couldn’t lance the boil for 36 months?

If this isn’t true, its the PR machine speaking junk to an audience they believe can’t discern junk from substance.

    Neither is good.
