Notes from Today’s Scrimmage

stoops craft ice bucket drake jackson

While visiting campus, 2016’s #1 offensive guard Drake Jackson (@THE_DRAKE_52) broke some news by Tweeting the picture above of Mark Stoops and Joe Craft accepting the ice water challenge.

–  Expect to have a starting quarterback named Monday.  The decision will likely be made after the coaches breakdown the tape.  If it’s worth anything, I saw Pat Towles after the scrimmage walking back from the Stadium who said today was “good.”

–  Neal Brown is turning the Air Raid up after today.  After focusing on improved tempo and communicating the signals, Brown is refocusing his efforts in the passing game.   2/3 of the reps today were passes; once the starter is likely named Monday, those extra reps will be crucial.

–  Wide receivers Ryan Timmons, Cameron Fogle and Rashad Cunningham all caught Neal Brown’s eye today.

–  The tight ends will likely be used more this year.  Steven Borden has really improved in the pass game, catching a touchdown pass today.  Brown also said that Ronnie Shields responded well after a rough scrimmage on Wednesday.

This waiting for a quarterback is foolish. We pay this guy millions of dollars to make these kinds of decisions and now there is absolutely not enough time left to get whomever he picks ready for the first the game. He has done a real disservice to the unlucky winner.

This is a rebuilding year. We hope for 4 wins. We think we can get 5 and maybe even 6 however, we still are young and need more experience and talent. If Barker is the man with the most talent give it to him and let him learn on the job. Losing this year would be fine if it makes him into a winner for next year.

I have to agree with RealUKfan for the most part. A QB should have been named at least two weeks ago, even if they have to change that decision before the first game. If Stoops and Brown can’t made a decision let’s just wait until game day and draw straws…short straw gets to be the starter.

I agree. There’s absolutely no reason for Nick Saban not to have named a starting quarterback by now. That is who we’re talking about isn’t it?

    Nick Saban disagrees with you.

#1 wants a qb named based on a couple practices? I will rely on the coaches’ evaluations over a couple weeks of practices and meetings.

Saban is paid millions of dollars and he still can’t decide who his QB will be. Time is running out. There is no way he’ll be ready for the first game. He is obviously a poor excuse for a coach. Then there’s Spurrier who changes QBs like he changes his socks. No way that team can be on the same page.

The whole season will boil down to how effective the defense performs. All the talk and hype has been offense and i hope we will score at will, but it’s the defense that will determine if we win or lose ball games. Someone said it the other day, If they don’t score, we can’t lose, and the only way we lose is to be outscored! I hope we play GREAT defense this year! Go Big Blue!

REESE Philips should start because he has been consistent with what the Coaches want they just don’t want to disappoint TOWLES and BARKER. REESE should have started last season

Any coach with a half a brain always prepares TWO quarterbacks to start! That’s common knowledge. You may name a starter, or not, but you have to have TWO guys ready to start. We had a WR go down last year CELEBRATING AFTER A SCORE!! Guys get hurt throwing TENNIS BALLS to each other!?! It does not matter who starts or when the starter is named. All that does is give us something to talk about. BOTH top two must be ready. End of discussion. Biggest thing going on is deciding to redshirt Barker not. We have a 3 way race, because they wanna know if Barker plays second half of the season. He must be looking fairly good – if they are still thinking that he may play at any point.

Patrick said today was “good”. I’m thinking he separated himself this week, especially after Tuesday’s performance.
