New UK Football Trailblazers Statue to be Unveiled Next Thursday

One of the four players that will be featured, Nate Northington.

It’s been 50 years since Nate Northington and Greg Page arrived on UK’s campus.  A year later Northington broke the color barrier in the SEC with Wilbur Hackett and Houston Hogg on the sideline.

Next Thursday at 7:00 they’ll be honored with a new statue that sits just outside that new football training facility.  The public is invited to the event that will celebrate a part of history that is too often overlooked.

If you’ve missed this part of history, listen to The Matt Jones Podcast with Hackett and Northington before showing your support next Thursday outside of Commonwealth Stadium.

It’ll be the most worth-while event the football program will probably accomplish this season. We’ll see.

Not sure why Jim Greene will not be have one there as well. A true legend and awesome mentor for kids. I wish UK would consider adding a statue for him!!

I know he did not play foot ball but he was one of the first black athletes at the University. Those who do not know him, he was a track star, beating out the likes of OJ Simpson. He was injured and unable to go to the Olympics. He hold the record for the fastest 50 yard dash, a record that will never be broken. He also has 2 NCAA National Championship rings!
