Neal Brown breaks down the quarterback race

Offensive coordinator Neal Brown and his awesome UK polo shirt also came on the show this morning, and Brown said he’s really pleased with the team’s progress, and that fans will see a “better product” on the field Saturday during the Spring Game. “We’re going to have a better product,” Brown said, teasing that it’s also going to be a “huge” recruiting day. “Some big names are coming in.”

Of course, everyone wants to know about the quarterbacks. Here’s Brown’s breakdown of each QB this spring:

Patrick Towles: “Towles is much improved. Fundamentally, before, he really had a hitch in his delivery, he was slow getting the ball out of his hands, he made big negative plays that would get you beat. He has taken those away. He’s not making those big negative plays. His ball is getting out of his hand faster. He’s got big time arm talent. He’s got as big an arm talent as you’re going to see. He’s a big kid, he can run too. People underestimate his athleticism. He’s a good natural runner.”

Drew Barker: “With Drew, I’ve always gotta remind myself, he’s 13 practices in. He should in high school. He does some things good. He does not carry himself like a high school senior. He came in and attacked, he’s really handled himself well, he’s studied well, he’s put himself in a position to win the job. He’s making too many mistakes right now, but young people do.”

Reese Phillips: “Reese is just steady. You go around, you don’t really notice him, he’s not the biggest guy, but he gets the ball out of his hand fast, he’s the most accurate of the three, and he probably does more things right. Top end talent? Maybe not, but he does a lot of things that your lay fan probably doesn’t notice.”

Brown didn’t say whether or not they’ll name a starter at the end of the spring, but stressed that the staff is ready for someone to step up and claim the job sooner rather than later: “We need somebody to win the job. We’ve trimmed it from four to three. We’d like to trim it some more, and then get into the fall and see. But we’re not going to drag this out. We’re going to name a guy, give him plenty of rope, and let’s go play.”

I’m ready.

Seems like they learned their lesson after last year. Glad to hear Neal say this.

Sounds to me like Towles has everything you can ask for. If it keeps like this..Redshirt Drew and let Cadillac Pat Run the show. I thought he showed a ton of good things his Freshman year.

If they name anyone other than Towels as starter in the spring that gives him an easy opporunity to transfer. Starter won’t be named until Fall.

If Towles transfers in the fall, wouldn’t he be eligible immediately still? He was redshirted last year, and he hasn’t played a game yet.

Towles is your starter, Phillips is your backup, and Barker is your redshirt.

He would be less likely to transfer if they name the starter a few weeks before the season starts. But I do not know the answer to your question.

UKfan– I think this makes the most sense right now.

Start your most talented overall–let him grow more and lead. If he gets injured or underperforms, you’ve got Mr Steady to put in, calm everything down/give team a boost and run a system he is well suited for. Redshirt Drew, let him learn at a reasonable pace, and put 2 yrs between he and Towles..
      Re-evaluate everybody in off season.
(In an emergency, maybe Max can provide some veteran snaps)

Neil looks like he about to sell me insurance. Or tell some old lady if she checked to see if the computer was turned on.

Hurt, sadly he is no longer a factor and probably will not play much ever again, unless he transfers.

Please name a starting quarterback. Lets don’t make the same mistake we did last year. Here’s a good way to do it, name a starter build his confidence and then if it doesn’t work then change. SIMPLE.

I would love to see Brown on the dating game. He couldn’t choose a date if he had too.

Who’s the smartest QB and isn’t going to get UK beat on huge plays on the field.
    Go with the smartest QB.

Based off his comments it sounds like Reese is the guy? Maybe he knows its Reese all along and is just messing with us. He just about endorsed him.

This season will be like the fifth or sixth in a row UK will have a new Game 1 QB starter. Hopefully that streak ends next season. Now that there’s a QB in waiting, recruiting priority needs to focus on WR and I’ll also say DB.

So, Whitlow was the number 4 QB at UK in spring practice, before he quit so he could go somewhere else, because he had to be a QB? Whitlow was not the starting QB on his high school team. Why when he got to UK, and the SEC, did he think he could only play QB? I would think he would see that he would be better off trying to be the next Randle Cobb, while playing in the SEC, than going down to a level that will let him play QB.
If he goes ahead and leaves, I hope when he looks back he feels it was worth it.
