Music City Bowl Refs Received Threats from Kentucky Fans

Two controversial calls in the Music City Bowl incited rage across the Big Blue Nation.  A few fans took it too far.

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura reports Pac-12 official Chris Coyte and his crew have been harassed by Kentucky fans since the December 29 loss to Northwestern in Nashville.

In the days following the game, Coyte received a barrage of threatening calls to his cell and office phones, sources said, as did the commercial real estate association he belongs to.

Benny Snell’s ejection and the missed late hit on Stephen Johnson were not great calls.  That does not matter; you should never, under any circumstances, harass or threaten an official.  This behavior is unacceptable and tarnishes the reputation of Kentucky fans everywhere.

Great. We got a reputation after the roofer incident and now we will get an article about every little thing. Thanks ESPN.

No, thank you to the dumbasses who don’t get that it’s just a game.

3 things: 1) How do we know it is Ky fans doing it? 2) If the Pac 12 had issued a statement addressing the mistakes or that they will look into it further, etc., it would have helped. 3) Finally, after watching basketball games all year I am surprised that everyone of them don’t get harassed.

Yeah, how do we know it’s UK fans? Maybe it’s Northwestern fans upset because they WON….Jeez.

My Dixie, I guess you’ve never heard of people trolling or pretending to do or say something to make another group, race, etc. look bad? It’s happening all the time.

Think it’s fake? Go over to RR and read a few threads with posts from guys with 10,000 posts trashing our players. Or listen to the call-in shows, like the guy the other day saying Cal needs to go. Hell, I don’t have to think back very far to remember good ole boys calling in to pre-game and coach shows complaining that more Kentucky white boys weren’t on the team.

There are some stupid people in the world. Don’t forget it.

NW won by a point because of terrible officiating, Dixie. Good thing I bet on UK anyway because NW couldn’t even cover the 8 point spread with the officials help. Oh, and the SEC has now won 9 of the last 12 national titles. Big 10 had 1. What a joke. SEC even owns the Big 10 in basketball now. Baseball is dominated by the SEC, too. Your big 10 teams suck.

Are you talking about the same Big10 that went 3-1 vs SEC this season? Doh.

Psychologists tell us that human behavior can be depicted by a bell-shaped curve, with typical behavior in the middle of the graph and extreme behavior on the fringes. Typically, people live their lives, do their jobs, and take care of their loved ones. Sports should be a hobby. When compulsive people confuse sports with real life priorities, they can project love or hatred onto public figures. Only the nuttiest actually act on it.

Fans making personal threats against officials must understand they are committing criminal behavior, opening themselves to prosecution, and making UK’s fan base look like a psychotic mob. The old saying “get a life” applies here.

Criminals simply don’t care that they are committing criminal behavior, and there are also enough mouth breathing morons out there who simply don’t have the mental capacity to realize that they make the whole university look bad.

Interestingly, the article didn’t say “death threats”. Maybe the threats were something like, “I’m gonna batch slap your oak tree”, or “I’m gonna tell the PAC-12 to fire your rear end”.

On another note, several years ago there was an Oklahoma-Oregon game that was totally screwed up by PAC-12 officials. So much so that, if I remember correctly, OU Swore they would never play a game officiated by PAC-12 guys again.

Haha…had that thought myself. But they are correct nonetheless. This behavior is not ok people. What can you possibly gain from this action versus what could it possibly cost you. Think about this when making emotional decisions.

Just further proof we have some very stupid fans. Just outright not intelligent people. Of course, a lot of them call in on the radio and post on the boards and here, so we already knew about them. The sad thing is they don’t realize how stupid they are.

True, same could be said about every fan base, though. It’s only a story because it’s Kentucky.

I think it’s a joke personally that this is even an article. Last time it clearly said death threats with the Higgins incident.
This just says threats. What kind of threats? To me it’s an unsubstantiated claim when you don’t present the full case. A pre-release of an event isn’t always smart either. KSR should know about posting something stupid before finding out real info (cough cough I’m talking about the Lavar Ball time up post).

What difference does “what kind of threats” make? If our fans are contacting officials in order to make personal threats of any kind, that is criminal behavior.

Personally I think Coyte’s feelings were hurt again because the whole nation was bashing him for that call and his pathetic ego couldn’t take it so he made this story up to get some sympathy. Just a theory though

Who really knows if calls and threats were made. If we’re simply relying on Chris Coyte’s claims, then I would be highly suspicious. Afterall, he’s already proven he has trouble with giving an actual and accurate accounting of what happened between him and Benny. I can see some embellishment from Coyte to simply get some sympathy. I am not in favor of contacting officials by any means, but I think in this situation, you have to consider the source, and in my opinion, is highly suspicious and can’t be believed.
