Add the Pioneer Football League, which includes Morehead State, to the growing list of conferences opting out of the 2020 season. This morning, the PFL’s Presidents Council announced that the conference will not compete this fall due to challenges related to team travel and difficulties meeting applicable state, local and institutional health requirements and COVID-19 mitigation strategies. Members of the PFL include Morehead State, Butler, Davidson, Dayton, Drake, Marist, San Diego, Stetson, Valparaiso, and, starting in 2021, Presbyterian and St. Thomas.
“The Presidents and Athletic Directors of our respective universities made this very difficult decision after extensive deliberations and consideration of many factors,” said James M. Danko, president of Butler University and chairman of the PFL. “We recognize that our student-athletes will be disappointed, but our highest priority is the health and safety of all those involved in our athletic programs. Ultimately, the risks of proceeding are simply too high especially to ensure the safety of our students.”
The Big Sky Conference announced it will try to play its football schedule in the spring, adding to the likelihood that the FCS will have to cancel its playoffs. Thus far, seven FCS football conferences have canceled their fall seasons, which leaves the FCS with fewer than 50% of the teams necessary to hold a championship this fall.
Go away, 2020.
