Current, former players post cryptic messages following loss to Florida

UK Athletics

UK Athletics

Of all the bad things we’ve learned about Kentucky’s offense the past few weeks, here’s one good thing: the Terry Wilson to Keaton Upshaw connection is real. We all — including a prominent former player and a current starter — agree Kentucky needs more of it.

Kentucky’s lone touchdown today was a four-yard pass from Wilson to Upshaw, and two of the three longest receptions were Upshaw’s, an 11-yard completion to convert a fourth down on the opening drive, and a 13-yard catch at the start of the touchdown drive to start the second quarter. After the TD, former Kentucky star Mike Edwards said it’s time to “feed” Upshaw, which Quinton Bohanna agreed with once the game was over.

Hmm. After the game, Mark Stoops said the plan was to get Upshaw the ball early and often, but Florida’s defense made the necessary adjustments in the second half.

“We were trying to get him the ball. We had a big explosive play for him called and he got grabbed. He got held. He got pushed. Whatever you want to call it, he didn’t get open,” Stoops said. “Certain plays where we had RPOs, we’re going to him if the look is there. If not, they’re going to hand it. Those had been effective for us. That was the touchdown pass, so obviously they made some adjustments and covered him up as well.”

While we wait for more players to chime in on social media, here’s Upshaw’s TD:

UPDATE (8:47 pm): Terry Wilson weighs in

About an hour ago Kentucky’s starting quarterback shared an ambiguous message to his Instagram story. He followed this one up with a “no cap.” One might assume that Mr. Wilson has been holding back what he really wants to say about UK’s offense. Will he let it rip and share his true feelings about the way his senior season has unfolded? We may never know.

Meanwhile, running back A.J. Rose doesn’t have time for negativity.

So now the defense is calling out Gran’s play calling. I am sure the defense is sick of what they are seeing.

It’s Stoops not Gran controlling the offense.

You’re absolutely correct. Anyone who thinks Gran has the ultimate say so is 100% blind.

I forgot to add that Stoops needs to look at what Saban has done. He adapts when the game changes. Stoops doesn’t. Passing offenses are not anomalies anymore. They are the rule, not the exception.

Anyone who has played football or basketball for that matter knows it’s not that hard to feed a particular player.

What’s Terry going to say? Been holding his tongue??? Right. Only thing he holds onto is the ball way too long as the pass rush closes in.

He’s held his tongue better than he held the ball on his runs. He’s got 20 turnovers in basically 2 seasons. Hold ur tongue Terry… pretend the pocket is collapsing and ur on the edge of field go range. Keep holding it.

Terry Wilson can just go away already. If we had an actual QB in 2018, we could’ve potentially been playing in the college football playoffs. Instead, our arguably greatest defense ever, Shell, and Bowden carried us to 10-3. Wilson has no arm talent and certainly doesn’t have it between the ears. He consistently throws behinds his receivers on easy, short slants. He’s the slowest I’ve ever seen in going through his progressions. And to top it off… what experienced QB at his age doesn’t know they have a free play when the defense jumps offsides!? He’s had multiple opportunities when that has happened and has no freaking clue. His decision making on reads is so infuriating. Couple that with the fact that he can’t throw it within 10 yards of a receiver on actual downfield passes and you realize that Terry Wilson is not a P5 starting quarterback. He should probably keep his mouth shut.

Agreed. Almost all of his passes on the slants were thrown behind the receiver today. Not a good look for him to be critical of anyone based on his performances either.

Once I heard Wilson tried to quit and the coaches convinced him to return that showed that Stoops and Gran are ready to go 3-7 with Wilson.

Here’s a less cryptic message: when you give up a punt return touchdown (more special teams problems) before halftime, and then the first drive of the second half you allow them to march right down the field and score, and you’re playing Florida at the Swamp, and your Kentucky football (not Bama or some other blue blood), you lose the football game. Just crying and opinions (no less common than assholes).

So their game plan was to get it to UPSHAW…that’s IT? Wow!!!

      10:25 pm November 28, 2020 Permalink

      Yep. That was it.
Recurring theme. Game prep and planning prior to the game is good. Opposition makes adjustments, and our coaching staff is clueless to make changes on the fly.
TW at QB helped to beat Florida to stop the losing streak. The game he played that day was not his normal game. That game was the exception. Every week the coaching staff is hoping for the exception to become a weekly event. Delusional.
The coaching staff has failed this group of young men.

Just a side note – I get that Twitter isn’t graded for grammar or spelling, and people use shortcuts to save characters, but if u want to sound like an ignoramus, writing in the style these guys do – while having ur college education paid for – is an effective and efficient way to do so.

      How’s that one? JK! 😉

On a serious note, yeah. My grammar isn’t perfect, but the folks who refuse to use a period? Especially those who also write tomes? Can’t read those.

Chris – lol is fine. This sentence is ok: “Chris ur posts are usually right on.” But ur attention deficit (not reading long sentences, punctuated only by commas) would deprive u of great work. Period. This includes, the introduction to the Declaration of Independence (70+ words) and the Gettysburg address (opening 30, closing >60). Hv a great weekend. Period. Better luck on the hardwood I hope!

Yep. What has happened to the offense from DrewBarker 1st half vs SMiss to now? How could it have fallen THIS far?

THIS D with THAT O… can we rewind the offense? Somebody push that button

TT needs to not say anything. He said s let on his throws, has ZERO timing…worst QB we have had in I don’t know how long…we had receivers open and he throws underneath for 5 yards then an interception. This is embarrassing and unacceptable. FIRE STOOPS.

Stoops needs to check the white file cabinet in the corner. Bottom drawer, way in the back. Reach a little further back. Dust off the cobwebs. Use the key that is in the desk drawer. Unlock and open: AIR RAID by Hal Mumme
