Max Duffy is chasing history with average yards per punt this year

Max Duffy currently leads the nation in punting average at just over 51 yards per punt, and he’s on track to win the Ray Guy award, given annually to the best punter in college football. It’s a great start to Duffy’s junior season in Lexington, but I don’t think may people realize just how good it really is.

According to Sports-Reference.com’s College Football site, Duffy’s 51.2 yard average is the best since it began recording punt stats back in 2000. He is booming the ball farther than any other college punter in the last two decades of college punting!

If Duffy’s number holds, he will not only have the best average over the last 20 years, but it will be the best punt average in NCAA history!

Going even further, his 51.2 average would also lead the NFL right now, and would rank second in NFL history behind the record of 51.4 yards per punt set by Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins back in 1940, EIGHTY YEARS AGO. That’s the only time an NFL punter has averaged 50 yards or more per punt in a single season, according to NFL records.

Needless to say, Duffy is an outstanding punter and Kentucky has him at a time when it looks like there will be a lot more punting to come.

5 out of 10 this year and 8 of 10 from last 2 years.

    Balls must be juiced.

Great for Max Duffy, but hard to brag about when you consider the fact that the offense consistently leaves enough field for him to average such a ridiculous number, kinda speaks to how inept our offense has been. If you look at the list, not many of the above mentioned punters are on teams that are very successful.

I knew someone could find the dark lining of a silver cloud if they just looked hard enough.

There is no silver cloud when your punter is your most nationally recognized player, so put your Duffy Jersey on and cheer for more punts

There may be a silver cloud if you’re Duffy or do you just want to rain on everyone’s parade? And by the way you should know you’re on the wrong path when Loother is backing you.

Well I’m not Duffy, I am a UK football fan, and while I appreciate his value I would gladly sacrifice his stat for better offensive capabilities to move the football, put points on the board and win games. It’s great and all but the only value I see to this recognition of this is we may be able to land the no1 punter out of HS next year due to the wealth of opportunities.

I’m not Duffy either but I’m happy for him and I hope he makes it at the next level and it may help get another Aussie. I’d like to be winning too but we’re not so I’m going to find a positive somewhere instead of just kicking rocks.

Best damn punter I’ve ever seen in my life. That rugby style kick of his is awesome. He might end up a NFL ALL PRO at punter.
