Mark Stoops on his quarterback situation

UK Football Fan Day

During his interview with Matt Jones on Kentucky Sports Radio radio this morning, Mark Stoops talked in depth about his quarterbacks, the hottest topic in the state of Kentucky right now. He said his quarterbacks certainly need to play better, and they know that, but they can’t do it alone; the pieces around them need to step up, too. It’s tough when the QB bounces back from a bad throw with one right on the numbers, only to see the receiver drop the ball. The coaches are pressuring everyone on offense to step it up.

Stoops also had some good news regarding his starting quarterback, Max Smith. The shoulder injury he suffered in the Louisville game is not the same or related to the nagging shoulder injury he rehabbed all summer. This one is in a different area and they expect him to return soon.

However, if Smith’s injury is more severe than it appears now, they’re okay with pulling the redshirt off Patrick Towles if Jalen Whitlow isn’t getting it done by himself. Right now they’re working to get Jalen more confident in his arm, started faster, and looking for ways to settle him down.

We’ll have more from the Stoops interview in just a bit.

Go Cats.

Im very supportive of the football team but lets be honest if whitlow has to play full time we are no longer the air raid offense

We certainly do limit ourselves with Whitlow

1 and 2.. I really think Stoops is protecting his players when he doesn’t come out and blame them… If Max goes down, I would bet Towles would work his way on plus he doesn’t want to come out and tell Florida that

Is this news about the QB? I for one of many are tired of reading about it.
Smith is #1, Whitlow is #2 QB.
If both go down, what choice does UK have but to play someone else.
    This has become crazy.
The QB issue has been solved.
We’re tired of reading about it, and tired of some people keep repeatedly hammering Smith and Whitlow with degrading comments. It’s time to stop beating up on our starting QBs.
It’s been going on for years.
It’s time to stop this STUPITY.
Two coaching staffs called the QB situation the same way.
99% of the BBN is tired of rreading this garbage!

I feel ur pain #4. Tired of it too. Soon we’ll have a QB for this offense. The staff can only work w/ the hand they’re dealt. My question is there never is any mention of Reese Phillips. I thought I read previously that he had passed Towels in the depth chart. He played well for what limited snaps he got in spring.

I like Pat Towles, but high chances are that he will transfer. He deserve a chance somewhere.

When Towles gets his chance (in an actual game) he will show he is well-suited for the Air Raid offense. Forget the redshirt, he will be needed to play this season, probably sooner than later. If you are going to sell offense as “Air Raid”, then develop the QB’s that are suited to that style. Stop trying to force a sqare peg into a round hole. Whitlow is a very good athlete and football player. He is NOT a very good QB. Find a way for him to help the team’s offense, but give up the idea that he is somehow going to be effective in the AIR RAID offense. I am tired ot reading that garbage!

Why doesn’t UK’s offense run a “duck dodge miss and hoodwink” play? It seems so obvious we need that play.

I also am tired of this. This has happened every year I can remember at UK except maybe when Couch was here. Fans are always wanting the backup quarterback to be playing. It happens all the time. Just do not understand it. You think Stoops and Neal Brown are stupid. They see these kids everyday in practice and in the games and do you really think if Towles should be starting they would not do it. They did not recruit any of these quarterbacks and are doing what they think is best to win games. I don’t think they are saying we will start the best player at every other position but when it comes to quarterback the hell with it, we don’t care.
