Mark Stoops just got himself a new contract extension with the University of Kentucky. UK announced today that Stoops’ contract has been extended through the 2018 seasonThe new deal extends the term from Dec. 31, 2017 to June 30, 2019, giving him five years remaining on his contract.

Mitch Barnhart said, “We are excited about the enthusiasm and recruiting success that Mark and his staff have brought to our football program. We had the nation’s second-largest increase in attendance last season and we have had the two largest spring-game attendances in school history (in 2013 and 2014).”

“In recruiting, Mark and his tireless assistant coaches have made an obvious impact with their first two classes and that momentum is carrying forward for 2015.”

Yahtzee.

Look, I’m as excited about the recruiting success as much as the next guy. But dude has won TWO games. Can’t we let him have some on-the-field success before extending an already good contract? Should we go ahead and announce a coach-in-waiting while we’re at it?!

Way to support the team, “fan”. I think the fact that this crew alone has recruited better than anyone in UK Football history is enough for at least one extension.

You all are being too hard on this guy. If Stoops came out this year and won 1 game would you feel the same? I’m of the belief that we will steadily improve each year, and that Stoops is the right guy. But I don’t think it’s insane to wait on an extension till he wins some games.

This is a good move because it sends a message to rival recruiters that they can not use the line that Stoops won’t last at ky because he can’t win there. If he can continue to bring in top recruits the wins will follow. UK fans need to realize that these young recruits are looking for early playing time in the top conference in all of college football. It would be great for their careers to help rebuilt a competitive team in the SEC. UNDERSTAND!

This could be our last chance for the building a good football program at UK. So why the wait and see attitude? GO for it and spend the $$ and if it doesn’t work it won’t make any difference one way or the other. GO CATS

Joker lost 10 games and got fired. Stoops lost 10 games and got a contract extension. IT’s too early. Need on field success. This just looks like racial discrimination.

    • UKfan
      4:43 pm May 6, 2014 Permalink

Listen, I like Joker and I wanted him to do well but he didn’t. Year after year it progressively got worse. Sorry “Agreed” you have an issue with race. Might be time for some self evaluation.

      2010 6-7
      2011 5-7
      2012 2-10

If you can’t see that UK is getting better (watch their performance during the games now versus during the Joker Phillips era). If Stoops does not have the program turned around by year 3, then he will be in the hot seat as well. Frankly I don’t see that happening.

  3. Let’s just hope he’s striking that pose on the sideline a lot more this fall than last.
    GO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. What this tells me
    10:23 am May 6, 2014 Permalink

is that other programs are keeping an eye on Mark Stoops. No change in compensation, but what this does is require a larger buyout if anyone tries to pick him in the next couple of years.

You are spot on here. This fact and extending to “guarantee” recruits that be will be here is the reason for this move, and contrary to other comments here shows our AD making sounds business decisions for our athletic programs!

Why don’t we wait to see if Stoops can win some games BEFORE extending his contract. I like Stoops a lot but wasn’t he hired to win SEC games? So far he’s proved that he’s an outstanding recruiter but he hasn’t shown that he can coach successfully in the SEC. The talent evaluation of the existing players, depth chart, and play calling last season stunk. How do you go all spring, summer and a full season and no recognize that DeShawn Mobley is your best RB or that Max Smith should have started against WKU instead of Whitlow??? At this point, a contract extension is premature. Stoops needs to prove himself with some wins.

Ummmmm, if you inherit a great running car that had BAD tires (UK with Jokers players) and you go to a garage to get NEW tires (Recruits) What would you have afterwards?
But if you know so much, how about giving out tomorrow’s lottery numbers.

    • Wendy
      10:57 am May 6, 2014 Permalink

Ummmmm, you would have a car with new tires with no guarantee the new owner is capable of driving it. That is the original poster’s point if I understand it correctly. Recruiting does not equal wins on the field necessarily, you still need a capable coach. You can have all of the 5 Star studs in the world and still underachieve with the wrong coach. I also think Stoops needs to show that he can win games.

    • schwing
      11:02 am May 6, 2014 Permalink

i also laugh at the assumption that there was a great-running car in the equation.

    • UKfan
      11:07 am May 6, 2014 Permalink

First, I think Mobley is a very good running back and wish him the best at EKU. Having said that, UK is stacked at RB who fit in better with the spread offense Neal Brown will be running.

Second, since you are bringing up the past involving the QB, let’s discuss. Smith may or may not have been the best qb for the job against WKU, but lets try to put this into the season perspective. Smith was also prone to getting hurt. The idea was to play a QB who was durable and UK would not have to waste another redshirt of Towles. Towles will be the QB next year and our QB situation is better for it.

Third, if you have to refer to the AD at UK in a derogatory manner it goes to the type of person you are. You may need to look into that mirror one more time before you make any more comments.

that’s what he was asked to do as part of his original contract.

  10. ReverendBlue
    10:40 am May 6, 2014 Permalink

I understand the reasoning that says, “Let’s wait until he wins more than 2 games before we go and extend his contract.” However, I believe that UK football has a small window of opportunity to truly get things turned around and our program on another level. In 2 1/2 recruiting classes, Stoops has brought in more 4-star players than we’ve seen in some time. This is the best opportunity we’ve had to become legit in some time.

    1. This move says to recruits, “We plan to keep him here for your four years.” Keep on coming.

    2. If Stoops has success this year or next, more established programs may come calling. This helps keep Stoops here (but certainly doesn’t guarantee it) to finish the job upgrading the talent in our program.

      True point.

Same point can be said about your job. The boss can give you a raise and praise you for doing a good job and you can still leave if you so choose. The gesture from the administration says we appreciate you coach for your hard work and we want to show you.

Now Jason tell us something we don’t know.

    • ReverendBlue
      11:57 am May 6, 2014 Permalink

I believe I said in my post that this HELPS PREVENT — but doesn’t guarantee — another school from snatching him up. If that happens, we don’t have to pay the money anyway. If he stays, we’re gambling that Stoops will continue rolling in these recruits and we can compete with the middle to upper-middle teams in the SEC. Payoff!

I was a bit surprised when I heard that Stoops recruited himself to UK. The UK football program was in the cellar of the SEC, but he saw something that drew him to this job when he surely had other opportunities. He strikes me as the kind of guy who may want to build his own program versus maintaining one built by someone else.

What this staff has done & is doing is well worth an extension. Bad judgement on Barnhart? I understand everyone talking about the win total in year 1, but did you not see the lists of teams looking for coaches last year?traditionally Good programs & bad all had Stoops on their list of coaching candidates to try and hire. As this staff keeps getting top recruiting classes, it will reflect in the “w” column. We are getting SEC caliber recruits across the board. Throw in the fact that Neil Brown can finally run his offense & wins are coming, no question about it. You have to show love & support as an AD & fan base or a bright young coach like Stoops leaves. Not only has Stoops gone about running the program in a total original way, we as fans have to think different. Got to show love or Stoops will look else where, & we will be stuck in the rutt we’ve always been in.

Why is everyone expecting instant gratification from the football team? You do realize that implementing a winning football team takes more than one year, especially when the roster from the previous staff didn’t have the quality players needed to compete in the SEC? Building a team the right way takes time, so deal with it.

It is amazing to see how little UK fans expect from the football program and head coach. People being thrilled about the possibility of winning 4-5 games. Talk about toilet bowl standards, geez. Awarding Stoops with a contract extension after a 2-10 season purely based on recruiting success is moronic to say the least. The guy hasn’t won a single SEC game yet! The people who support handing him a contract exension are largely the same people who supported making Joker the coach in waiting instead of exploring the coaching market when Brooks retired. That was a dumb, dumb move. Stoops does not deserve a contract extension until he shows that he can win SEC games. End of story.

Sadly, I have to agree with a few of the other comments. He’s won 2 games and neither of them a conference game, was it? An extension might have been a bit premature, but it’s not the first time that Barnhart’s pulled the trigger a bit fast.

I’m in favor of the extension. CMS hasn’t won the games yet, but he wasn’t supposed to. It will help to build good faith with recruits, and let the coach know we appreciate the work he’s put in. CMS is getting recruits, the likes of which we’ve never seen here, and I appreciate that. My expectation is a bowl in year 3, with continued improvement beyond that. Anyone expecting us to win ANY conference games last year, don’t really understand the game. We had extremely poor personnel on both sides of the ball. Bad OL play, horrid QB and WR play, and barely one deep on D. We play in the best league in the game. You have to have quality depth to compete in this league. That takes time. The players are coming. Expect 4-5 wins this season, 6-7 next, and if things go well, contention in the east in year 4-5.
