Mark Stoops confirms Michael Smith has resigned

Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops has confirmed wide receivers coach Michael Smith is no longer with the football program.

In a spring football media opportunity this morning, Stoops told the press Smith has officially resigned from his position at Kentucky.

“I just wanted to confirm that Coach Smith did resign,” Stoops said. “I know you’ve all heard a lot about that, but he did resign.”

On Saturday afternoon, Football Scoop reported that Stoops is planning to hire Oregon receivers coach Jovon Bouknight. Two hours prior to filing the report on Football Scoop, The Oregonian reported that Bouknight was leaving Mario Cristobal’s staff at Oregon.

Not long after, Justin Rowland of Cats Illustrated confirmed that Bouknight would be replacing Smith on the coaching staff.

Smith, who was hired in 2018 and has been with the program for two years, was under contract for one more season before resigning.

Despite the confirmed reports of Bouknight joining the program, Kentucky has not yet officially announced the hiring, though Stoops did note that an announcement is expected “in the near future.”

“We’ll have an announcement in the near future about [Smith’s] replacement,” Stoops said. “That’s really all I can say about it at this point.”

Bouknight, who has been with Oregon since February of 2019, also spent time at Utah State for two seasons following a brief tenure at Texas Tech.

When asked about Kentucky adding a tenth assistant coach outside of Smith’s replacement, Stoops also added that he is getting closer to making a hire.

“I am, yeah,” Stoops added. “We’re getting closer on that as well. By the time we get back together after Thursday, after Spring Break, everything should be in place.”

Isn’t Smith the guy who has all the connections in Louisiana?

He also was the main reason our receivers were blocking like TEs. Plus it seems drops were down during the opening part of the season. A key reason Wilson and Smith looked food prior to injuries.

Does resignation mean he can’t handle the stress of college life anymore, did he have a buyout left, and if so does this mean he doesn’t have to pay it.
