LOOK: Mark Stoops leads Kentucky Football team in Black Lives Matter protest

This afternoon, Mark Stoops made it clear that racism has no place at the University of Kentucky.

Stoops, Associate Head Coach Vince Marrow, and Director of Player Development Courtney Love led the Kentucky Football team’s march at a Black Lives Matter protest in downtown Lexington alongside Mayor Linda Gorton and other community leaders. Before the march began, Stoops addressed his players, urging them to seize the moment and stand up for justice.

“We’re here to fight racism, to bring awareness, and to do our part,” Stoops said. “I think most of you know me, I keep things pretty tight to the vest with the media, but there’s no more of that on this issue. Everybody needs to get off the bench and make a difference, stand for something. We’re not going to tolerate any more racism and social problems. We want to make a difference and be a part of the solution. That’s why we’re here.”

Stoops said that when the Fayette County courthouse reopens, he wants his players to come back and register to vote so they can make their voices heard.

“We’re going to march to the courthouse as a symbolic sign and when it opens back up, our players can come back here and have a voice. They can register to vote and make a difference.”

UK senior offensive tackle Landon Young also addressed the group and led protestors in prayer.

“This is a group, this is a bunch of ethnicities, a bunch of colors, all coming together as one,” Young said. “I don’t care who you are, what your skin color is, no matter what, we will stand up against this injustice. It was wrong, and now, we have to move forward. The road is long, the road will have obstacles, but we have a bunch of leaders that are here to make a stance. Hear their voice and make a difference. I want to thank Coach Stoops, thank all the coaches who helped put this together.”

Love, who played at UK for two seasons before coming on staff as a graduate assistant and eventually taking over for Freddie Maggard as Director of Player Development, preached the importance of players using their voices to move the conversation forward.

“On behalf of the University of Kentucky, Coach Stoops, our team, it’s a blessing to be here. To be a part of this, it’s definitely sending chills down my spine right now, seeing everyone here, coming together, and rallying around one cause – that’s black lives.

“Those black lives matter, and we want to make sure that we come together as a town, as a community. We woke up in Kentucky, this is our home, we wear that across our chests proud. You guys [the team], you guys are the future, and you have a voice. That’s why we wanted to come here today. Guys, you do matter, you have a voice, period.”

I’m proud to be a member of the Big Blue Nation every day, but especially today.

Special thanks to Zack Geoghegan for capturing the scene for us.

I’m very happy to see this revolution coming about, but I’m really concerned about the violence that is following it around. I don’t believe the violence is connected to the movement, but it makes it dangerous for everyone.

    • Han
      5:37 pm June 5, 2020 Permalink

There’s 4 kinds of violence associated with the protests:

People using the protests as an excuse to loot and do damage and try to hurt people (be their targets other protestors or the police – and bear in mind this includes far right groups doing violence).

People protesting but also believing peaceful protests are ignored, so they smash things and vandalize to get more attention for the cause. Peaceful protests are far too often ignored or demonized anyway (thugs kneeling during the anthem? Remember that?), so they figure they have to go further.

Police/law enforcement taking down violent protestors and people who are hurting others. These police are doing their job to stop people who are a real threat to other innocents and to the police.

Police/law enforcement brutalizing peaceful protestors. There are countless videos, with full context, of police initiating violence against peaceful protestors or even bystanders who aren’t in the protests. There’s also ample evidence of police lying about what happened even with video evidence. Police report said the older man in Buffalo tripped and fell down–um, yeah, after a cop shoved him. But at least that old man was confronting the police/in their path. Many, many police officers are going out of their way to start things and abuse their power and use excessive, unlawful force. None of the other kinds of violence listed above (the other three points) justify or excuse this violence.

The protests are particularly about that last category, and about how there’s a President who wants to paint all protestors as terrorists and allow them to be beaten or “roughed up” by the boys in blue. And if you’re worried about it all being dangerous for everyone, then maybe you understand what it feels like for the black people who’ve always faced such danger.

99% of the protestors are simply protesting. Dont let the actions of few skew your view.

For eight years we had a black president, black attorney general and a Democrat congressional majority for a chunk of those 8. Same stuff happening every now and then with the rogue cops. We even had a black church shot up in Charleston.

Han it’s pathetic that your TDS shows up on EVERY post you make. You start out with some logical statements worthy of discussion and you HAVE to go TDS at the end. The President not ONCE has not said in his statements that non violent protest are not OK! Not ONCE! But you can’t help yourself because of your hatred for him. I truly wish you well but man you’ve got to get some serious help before your head explodes.

Peaceful protesting is great. Andy said wearing masks still doesn’t negate social distancing. Has he addressed that since protests started? Or has he changed his stance? Are the merits of these protests good enough reason in his eyes to look past social distancing even with masks? If so, does that mean he thinks these protests are more important than when people wanted to go to a church parking lot and sit in their cars and listen to a sermon on FM radio?

Violent protesting plays into the hands of the powers that should not be, they’re just waiting to send in the military and impose martial law. Why do you think out of town extremists groups are being bussed in to pour gas on the fire?

It’s not only about police officers killing people for no reason. When you are stopped at an airport because you are from the middle east or pulled over because you are a black man in a nice car it wrong. We cant rely on or blame the government for this. We have to chang on a personal level and stop blaming everyone else but search within ourselves and become the best person we can be.

Not possible Marcshlupp, doesn’t fit the narrative. ALL white people are racist and insensitive to others. You know, that white ‘privilege’ thing. Never mind that approximately 70% of the people I’ve seen on ALL TV channels are white. That’s just not good enough. It’s NEVER going to be good enough until ALL white people express that ‘white guilt and privilege’ thing. Once all of the ‘bad’ history of this ‘evil’ nation is erased according to some, it still won’t be enough. There’s ALWAYS going to be someone labeled whatever the case. Oh, I forgot to include according to Han on here, Trump is the reason for EVERYTHING. Never mind that Han’s ilk have had decades to improve things and haven’t done squat but keep their ‘constituency down to preserve their power in government.

Jaws2. I may misunderstand what you are saying but it sounds like you are saying people cant become the best person they can be. Everyone I know and have met in my life including myself can become better people. I agree with you that a lot of white people are finally recognizing the different issues and standing up for fellow Americans and not ignoring issues that do not concern them. It’s really nice to see so many Americans of different races, ages and religions come together to create a better American.

There may be some “alt-right” involved. I wouldn’t be surprised at all. But a lot of this is Antifa. You know, the fascists that claim they’re anti-fascists? They’re modern day Brownshirts. Plus, there are tons of videos showing blacks throwing rocks, beating people, etc. I hardly think they are alt right.

BTW, how are the good police to know who is peaceful and who is not with all this mayhem going on?

Again, where is the sympathy for blacks being killed in all this, and black owned businesses and homes being burned to the ground and/or smashed?

I can tell you the bs the right is peddling is just as dangerous and sometimes in the form of negative empowerment(see anti minority terrorism as of late)be more so. All I ask of Trump is for him to shut up, if he does that I can simply go back to ignoring him, instead he has to give anyone who wants to call him a racist fuel to claim it. Saying there’s bad people out there would be ok to say but he had to go and say there’s good people on both sides when white supremacists were involved, it would be completely ok to call antifa terrorist if he had called white supremacists attacking churches, stores, and what not and if had not pushed people to protest with armed intimidation tactics. A person with an assault rifle isn’t any less dangerous then a man with a brick. You don’t know if the guy with a gun is willing to shoot you if you don’t kiss his a$$, just like when a dude is walking down the street armed with any other weapon. A burnt down building is far less important than gunned down civilians no matter where they’re from. I’m one of the few conservatives out there willing to look at Trump objectively and I’m insulted none of his primary opponents were given a fair opportunity. I don’t want Trump and I don’t want a liberal but at this point I’m extremely torn because it would not be fair of me not to give someone else a chance simply because I gave Trump his and he slapped me in the face with it.

Chris they still have a chance to put their lives back together but the dead are lost till the resurrection and past that I actually put them on even terms, they both should be called terrorist. My point wasn’t that businesses don’t matter it’s that he is as bad as the liberals because like them if someone is likely to vote for him they can do no wrong but if it makes him look bad someone else always caused it. Bernie done the same thing with his “bros” and I can’t stand either one because it reminds of when my kids were toddlers.

Anything coming out of the well oiled machine of the federal government, or state for that matter, is full of lies and BS. Does not matter if the Democrats or Republicans are holding control. This country is run by corporations! Obviously race relations are not anywhere near perfect but they are better than when MLK was protesting the correct/logical way. However, we have seen a black president, many black sports coaches and more opportunity for the non white races. So to say we have come nowhere in the last 40 years, like Dwayne Casey said, is total BS. How about we just follow one of the golden rules of treat others like how you want to be treated? Do not wait for government leaders to show you the way remember we are their employers!

FBI releases detailed reports every year. Of course, complex issue, but you brought up race, rate, facts, etc. as if to prove something.

If you think the right is any less corrupt than the left you are brainwashed. Both sides are terrible–it’s basically a monopolistic structure. This is what happens when you have no perfect competition– we are left to choose the lesser of the 2 evils every election year.

for those of you that say, sure i support peaceful protests BUT what about (aborted babies, black on black crime, etc.)…do you really think it’s a good idea for a movement to mention every single semi-related instance, or maybe just focus on a few innocent murders to get legislative and policy reform?

And we do need reform, as many of you mention, police kill white people as well (just disproportionately), and even if rates decrease, one innocent life is always too many.

Believe me, these things are not forgotten, but it doesn’t make sense to dilute the message.

If you don’t think there’s a problem in this country regarding race, TALK to these black friends all you people seem to have to prove you’re not racist.
