KSR SOURCES: Kentucky extends counteroffer to Vince Marrow

The ball is now in Vince Marrow’s court.

According to KSR sources, the Kentucky football program has extended a counteroffer to UK associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow that is “essentially equivalent” to the offer Michigan State has prepared.

“Sources tell KSR that UK has returned with a counteroffer to Vince Marrow that is essentially equivalent to the Michigan St. offer,” KSR’s Matt Jones wrote on Twitter. “Now it’s just about what he wants to do.”

Last night, KSR broke the news that UK head coach Mark Stoops returned from a trip one day early to meet with Marrow in an attempt to convince him to stay at Kentucky.

We then reported on Wednesday afternoon that Michigan State is offering Marrow enough money to make him “one of the two highest-paid non-offensive/defensive coordinator assistants in America,” with Justin Rowland of Rivals.com adding that the Spartans could afford to give their new associate head coach – Marrow’s potential position – upwards of $1,000,000 annually and that a decision was expected in the next 48 hours.

With a counteroffer in place, the waiting game begins now.

Just go ahead and make him the assistant head coach already. Give him that 7 figures and a lifetime deal like Stoops. Maybe name a racehorse after him and part ownership…

Need to beat the offer to show you mean it. Forget about matching anyone. All you are saying by matching is “ They want you as much as we do “. Exceeding the offer says “ no one loves you as much as we do and we are sorry for having underpaid you”. I wouldnt blame Vince for saying “ I am going to take your salary match to light a fire under this Big Dogs Butt to get out of town”

This is huge. If Big Dog stays, that means more than just recruiting. These kids are developing bonds with this guy. Big Dog is the reason kids come and stay. Now with the Portal rule, kids can leave anytime they want. I believe Marries is a great recruiter, but more importantly Marrow is was these kids need to develop and grow as people and athletics. But we all know this that follow the team closely. Stay Big Dog!!!!

If UK can pony up for Ambassador Calipari and his multi-million dollar staff, then UK should exceed the offer from MSU! Remember, football surpassed basketball starting in 2016 for revenue and profit at UK and football is on the verge of potentially tripling what basketball brings in.

There a “few” more seats in Kroger Field than Rupp, I know math is hard but maybe when you get to high school you can devote more time to studies and less on your obsession with Cal hate.

    • Middy
      1:53 pm February 13, 2020 Permalink

I agree there no reason to bag on either program or any coach. They both important sports to UK… but seating has little to do with why football brings in more money. Our portion of television rights to SEC football dwarfs any gate money.

    • CPACAT
      1:21 pm February 13, 2020 Permalink

4Ever – We don’t sell out Rupp now for most games during the season (those days are long gone); only a handful of complete sell outs so far this year. Playing at a larger venue would just get you 40K empty seats for most games.

    • friendsofcoal
      12:39 am February 14, 2020 Permalink

Play basketball on Kroger field and drop the ticket prices to $20 each and the stadium would sellout almost every game.

    • RealCatsFan
      1:26 pm February 13, 2020 Permalink

I think you have to factor in that there are fewer games being played at Kroger Field, and also the relative novelty of having a competitive football team for a change. But of course Wrongeous1 (is this really a butthurt Rick Pitino?) would prefer that we slash Cal’s salary in half, or maybe hire some mid-major coach to come in and run this program the right way. As I recall, that worked really well when we hired that guy who lived and breathed basketball from down in Texas.

    • StillBP
      1:45 pm February 13, 2020 Permalink

I’m not saying our bball team would sell out at Kroger Field, but there are a lot of factors that would affect tickets sold. Sure, we don’t sell out at Rupp now and that’s partly because you can get a better view from your TV. No one wants to buy nose bleed seats. There are quite a few more lover level seats at Kroger Field w a much better view than upper level Rupp. And not having to go downtown is a bonus, along with more parking around it.

Of course this isn’t happening so it’s kind of pointless to talk about.

UK basketball has never been close in revenue with UK football even when we sucked. Here is an article from 2012 that shows even in our National Championship Year football produced 30% more revenue and the disparity as grown. https://www.aseaofblue.com/platform/amp/2012/9/18/3354632/kentucky-footall-whos-worth-more-uk-basketball-or-football

I believe that it’s true for most every program that football generates more revenue than any other sport. And who really cares, both programs are bringing in tons of money, it’s not like we have a case flow problem.

Think he stays. To go to MSU is starting all over again without being the HC. Don’t think he would mind starting over if he is the HC but why do it from the same position. He is at a place that he and Stoops already built into something so he stays to finish it. Also wonder what he has told recruits as he is a man of his word. He may have been up front and told them he could leave before they do, that is my guess. But now is not that time for a lateral move to a worse conference.

    • StillBP

Shouldn’t recruits already know he *could* leave before they do? He doesn’t know when job offers will come, surely people have enough common sense to know that he may take one some day if he desires.

Those are great reasons to be here, but if he feels he is being undervalued them he needs something like this to help get his market value established. Based on everything that people are saying, his ability to attract talent may demand that market value. However, the market is what determines value. If he doesn’t have people in the market that are willing to pay that much for him for the same responsibilities, it’s very difficult to convince your boss that the market value exists .

When you hear that Kentucky “Essentially” matched the offer, that really sounds like they did not exactly match the offer. Marrow can take the MSU job and catapult that into an even bigger job. We already know he aspires to be heach coach somewhere. I’m kinda mad at the disrespect Marrow has been shown here. We should have given him a raise long before the Youngstown job came up. Hopefully our offer makes him happy.

A $1M contract from UK would put Marrow at #13 in the SEC in Coordinators / Assistant Coach pay. (Based on last seasons numbers)

    • Bluebloodtoo
      12:54 pm February 13, 2020 Permalink

You don’t want marrow to stay because they are the highest bidder. You want him to stay because he wants to be here, but you have to be very close in the offer terms to isolate that decision.

    • Bluebloodtoo
      12:55 pm February 13, 2020 Permalink

There will always be a higher bidder. You’ll be doing this dance every year if you always match. At some point they need to choose where they want to be for a reason other than money/ benefits.

You are thinking of the 1950 AP article, paul, where Bear Bryant made a joke at some type of luncheon meeting about UK giving

    • satcheluk
      6:22 am February 14, 2020 Permalink

Because it has taken another coach to offer Vince his value before UK ponied up with a match. UK did what good employers do. A great employer would have calculated his market value (my company does this) annually and stayed at the front end of the salary curve PROACTIVELY. That’s how you let your employee know how much you respect them. Proactive vs reactive. That’s why I’ve been at this company longer than any in my life. I never have to ask for a raise. I get one every year and I never have to wonder how much they value me.
