KSR SOURCES: In SEC AD meeting, Phil Fulmer was sole voice speaking out against reopening athletic facilities

The presidents and chancellors of the 14 universities in the Southeastern Conference will vote on whether or not to lift the league-wide ban on team activities one week from today, but KSR is hearing there is some dissent among SEC athletic directors on when players should return to campus to begin training for football season.

Sources tell KSR that SEC athletic directors met virtually on Wednesday to discuss lifting restrictions on team activities, practices, and other organized gatherings, which currently run through May 31. The vast majority of the athletic directors supported allowing players to return to campuses on June 1; however, one athletic director spoke out against it, arguing that the ban should be in place indefinitely: Tennessee’s Phil Fulmer. After discussing it with the group, Fulmer proposed the date of June 15, but many believed that was too late for players to be ready to start the season on schedule. From there, the discussion was tabled for next week.

The final decision will be up to university presidents and chancellors on May 22, but the league’s athletic directors want to present a unified front. Had Fulmer not spoken up, the assumption is the group would have given the presidents an unanimous recommendation to lift the restrictions to allow players to return to campuses June 1, with a vote possibly taking place earlier than May 22. We’ll find out what will happen for sure one week from today.

That is honestly the most ridiculous thing I’ve read in a while. Step away from your TV. Things are not as bad as you’re being led to believe. People die every day from all sorts of things. To my knowledge, we’ve never been able to stop a single person from it.

Thanks for clearing things up expert. Everyone, stop watching tv and wait for what KentuckyBoy says. Pay no attention to Dr. Fauci, who has only been in his position since 1984. Both Trump and KentuckyBoy say don’t listen to him. 36 years in his position means nothing. Again, thanks for your expert opinion.

And there are MANY doctors and epidemiologist who disagree with Fauci. He’ll Fauci has changed his story so many times through this, he’s made people’s head spin. Hydroxychloroquin along with steroids has proven effective. Ask yourself why they keep ringing the death toll bells, and never report the fact that it comes with a 99% survivability rate. Then factor in they are counting people who die WITH Covid and not FROM Covid-19 in the numbers. You’re an idiot with Trump bias who refuses to listen to facts because you’re blinded by hatred because your TV tells you to be angry.

You’re just like Trump – when someone doesn’t agree with you refer to name calling. Fauci hasn’t changed his tune nearly as often as the president. And no one dies from Covid – they get Covid and then die from something else as the virus shuts down organs, etc. I get an overall view and form an educated opinion. I don’t just go to Fox News or a conspiracy theorist sight. Signed by idiot because KentuckyBoy said so and he’s an expert. Anyone who disagrees with him is wrong. This type of attitude is why our country is now a sh**hole – we have a small amount of people who think they’re experts and aren’t willing to listen to any other opinions.

It’s a little disheartening to hear you label YouTube, or anything other that the sites you get your news from a “conspiracy theorist sight”. Those are propoganda key words used by the left to try and discredit anyone who does fall in line with their rhetoric. There is a lot to be learned on YouTube. The REAL EXPERTS share knowledge on there all the time. I’m no expert, but I listen to them, and share their opinions. Herd immunity is a crucial part of how the human body adjusts and interacts with our world. I do however take issue with the fact that you’re calling AMERICA A SHITHOLE.

I’ve seen you mention 5G before, I thought you were just being funny but I think you’re being serious. Conspiracy sites are programming you what to think. 5G is a type of Non-ionizing radiation, which has lower frequencies and bigger wavelengths. It doesn’t produce enough energy to break apart the chemical bonds of DNA. Examples include radio frequency, or RF, radiation such as FM radio, TV signals and cellphones that use traditional 3G and 4G service.

Yep – and ask urself: who are u protecting if u leave the kids at home another month, or 6 months? Where are they safest? Well, the death rates for kids their age are almost zero (.0004) and depending on the state the mortality is 1/3 – 1/2 in nursing homes… not a lot of college athletes there. Something like 96% have two or more Co-morbidities… no college athletes there. Do the kids have doctors taking their temperature and dieticians supervising their diet at home? Security protecting them, housing being sanitized constantly? Who thinks the majority of college athletes are safer at home than at UK? It’s completely illogical. So if u really want to protect kids, to say nothing of their schoolwork, it’s better to be at UK, but if I want to run around with a tin foil hat in case the sky falls then cancelling football confirms ur bias. Congrats. But kids? Not safer at home than at UK.

    • bigblue98
      11:50 am May 15, 2020 Permalink

Maybe, just maybe Fulmer wanted it slowed down to prepare. These kids aren’t just going back to campus. There are other employees at UK and the other schools who have to go back when the players do (I.e. training staff, dieticians, cook staff, housekeeping, etc). Not like I know, but maybe doesn’t think can have all that ready in two weeks and maybe need couple more weeks. Not everything can be shut down, but there have to be specific plans in place to ensure the players don’t spread to support people I listed above.

      12:59 pm May 15, 2020 Permalink

Newtype – not sure who u think was ignoring variables but I’ll address it: 1) adjust for density, as it seems to be a key variable. Florida is more densely populated (and more populated) than NY. Twice as dense as Michigan. It’s death rate has consistently been 1/6 of Michigan and tiny fraction of NY. We never completely shut down and opened up “early” – but we addressed the problem where it was manifesting, in the nursing homes. Thus our nursing home deaths are 13% of NY with 2 million more residents. The only 2 of the top 10 most dense states that have below average cases and deaths are Ohio and Florida. 2) age and co-morbidity are the most important variable. Nursing homes accounted for a majority of deaths in heavily hit states like New Jersey (52%), Massachusetts (59%), Pennsylvania (66%) and Connecticut (55%), and for 80% of the deaths in otherwise lightly hit Minnesota. The first major outbreak was a nursing home in Washington… kind of a clue. Aa an earlier poster noted, upwards of 95% of deaths come from compromised patients: obesity, diabetes, heart disease chief among them. These are the most prominent independent variables. It isn’t region, and racial demographics only parallel the co-morbidity data. More severe lock downs have done more damage economically but have not correlated to results in lower mortality rates. Put another way, states w harsh lockdowns have the highest mortality rates, within regional, density or peer groupings; states with no lockdown or more balanced approaches have fewer deaths. There may be other factors, but what can it be shown is that the lockdown makes u safe or absence of one makes u likely to die from it. That correlation is driven by age, co-morbidities and density. Keeping athletes at home, with less access to care, appropriate diet and security hurts kids – it doesn’t help them. That’s data driven, if anyone is actually interested in “SCIENCE” that the talking points all insist they are.

“It’s in your nature to destroy yourselves.”

That’s what I think every time I hear people, like some of those here, rejecting sound medical advice. And for entirely political reasons. I know it’s wrong, but a part of me wants these people to go to bars and churches and other social gatherings, enjoy their freedom, spread the disease among like-minded individuals, and, with any luck, die. The fewer of them that survive this mess, the better. Isn’t that just awful? At least they should get sick and be denied admission to a hospital or ICU because of overcrowding. And if there’s any justice, their families and loved ones should suffer the same fate. They need to suffer. Their idiocy hurts everyone.
