Kentucky’s offense did not look any better after QB change

Joey Gatewood’s first college start sparked new excitement in a Kentucky program desperate for a bounce-back game. SEC East favorite Georgia wasn’t the ideal opponent for Gatewood’s first go at it, but with Terry Wilson in street clothes on the sideline, the coaches had no other choice but to make the midseason change from Wilson to Gatewood in the sixth game of the shortened season.

And things looked pretty much the same, unfortunately.

Gatewood got off to a decent start in his debut, the first successful play being a nine-yard run on 3rd and 4 to move the chains on UK’s opening drive, the third play of the entire game. He picked up another first down with his legs on the next offensive drive (the first possession ended in a punt) and he showed some elusiveness in the pocket when he escaped a corner blitz, but got tripped up from behind before he could turn the busted play into positive yards.

But as the game went on, UK’s offense with Gatewood in for Wilson looked a lot like UK’s offense with Wilson, only Eddie Gran was willing to use Chris Rodriguez a little more this week. Rodriguez carried his team on its one scoring drive, then sat and watched when Kentucky reached the red zone. The Cats settled for a field goal, the only points they’d get in the entire game.

It was, again, a complete failure by UK’s offense. They played too conservative and seemed to be using the same game plan they’ve used every game this season, handicapped by the lack of weapons in the passing game, plus some growing pains in Gatewood’s first start. Gatewood made some wrong reads, missed some throws, had a bad fumble and overall looked a lot like… Terry Wilson.

Gatewood finished with 91 yards passing with 15 completions on 25 throws, plus another 23 yards on the ground on 16 carries. Not bad for a first career start against Georgia, but the offense is still completely one-dimensional and unwilling to attack.

When asked if Gatewood will be get the first team reps if Wilson is healthy next week, Stoops said, “I don’t think I need to comment on that right now.”

Not sure about that. Ran better against the best run d in America than last week against Mizzou. Made the simple throws. Too many simple throws, but while I don’t agree it was no better, even the same would be better considering it was the kids first start. He should be the QB moving forward and try to figure out what the hell we are doing moving forward offensively. This year is long gone.

Exactly. Gatewood at the very least gives a chance to be better. Terry has had enough time now to show us what he has or doesn’t have and it’s time to start looking towards next year and preparing this team for next year. Simple as that.

The answer should be: yes or no. Not “I have no idea” which is what that meant.

Wow the love for terry Wilson is sad. This article seems to not factor in that gatewood went up against a top 5 defense in the country as well as having to deal with Eddie grans horrible play calling game after game. At this point if people can’t tell that gatewood will move this offense in a better direction this year as well as prepare him and our team for next year I don’t know what else to say. Eddie gran needs to go, gatewood and Crod need to start.

Agreed. Wilson has had plenty of time. He’s been very inconsistent and proven he’s not a downfield passer. Gatewood has one game. ONE GAME. And against Georgia

3rd and 5 first drive of the game. Right at the 50. We couldn’t wait to hand it off and then punt. Loser mentality and this staff has it.

The entire problem is obvious. It is Eddie Gran’s entire scheme, not just playcalling or talent. The shotgun with single back check-with-me BS on every single play is just too simplistic. Too easy to scout. Too easy to follow the ball on defense. Too slow to run. The different types of play options when choosing to run out of the gun every single play is much less than out of traditional QB under center plays. No NFL team does this
Eddie Gran must go..or UK goes back to doormat status in the SEC.

I think we’re they’re right now. It’s a toss up who’s worse between us and Vandy. I know Ky beat UT two weeks ago, but they will still finish with a better record this year.

Just line up in the wish bone and commit to the run. When our longest pass play or attempt is a 15 yard pass interference call we should totally abandon the pass. I hope this staff lose the qb and receiver recruits that are verbals. If any of them still come after watching this year they’re idiots. The kids deserve more than this.

Why would you hope that we lose recruits?

Something has to get the attention of this staff and administration that they can’t keep doing this.

I say give Stoops, Gran, Franklin, Roush and the rest of the KSR Terry Wilson fan club what they want. Put Wilson back in the starting spot, run two times up the middle, throw a bubble screen and then punt. Wilson is a great kid but not a QB. I’m not wasting any more time watching this mess any more.

You have to realize the Ga defense is very good. The 19 play drive was impressive.
Joey sorta gets a pass, first start against maybe best D in college.
One thing that does concern me is I had no idea he was so slow. Not sure he can out run most defensive tackles.

Obviously our offense needs some work regardless of who is at QB… OK – A LOT of work. But having said that – I firmly believe that today’s offensive effort would have been enough to earn a victory at Missouri last week. Terry will get another shot I’m sure but he better produce because all Joey Gatewood needs is more time and more reps… The Gatewood train is coming!! And yeah a couple of receivers to help Josh Ali out would be nice too.

Things I realized by this article:
    1. Drew knows nothing about football
    2. Drew knows nothing about football
    3. Drew must have a man crush on Wilson
