Kentucky still doesn’t get respect from SEC media in preseason poll

Kentucky finished in a tie for 2nd in the SEC East standings last year, but a promising end to the season and several returning starters wasn’t enough to earn them respect from the SEC media. The pundits voted Kentucky to finish FIFTH in the SEC East this season, behind Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

EASTERN DIVISION (1st Place votes in parenthesis)

School Points
Georgia (138) 1572
Florida (96) 1526
Tennessee (3) 998
South Carolina (5) 897
Kentucky 869
Vanderbilt 554
Missouri 388

I can understand picking South Carolina over the Cats, but Tennessee? C’mon guys. As Laura Rutledge said on KSR earlier today, Butch Jones’ seat is boiling hot.

Meanwhile, Alabama was picked to win the West and the entire league because of course.

WESTERN DIVISION (1st Place votes in parenthesis)

School Points
Alabama (225) 1683
Auburn (13) 1329
LSU (4) 1262
Arkansas (1) 796
Texas A&M 722
Mississippi State 633
Ole Miss 379

School Points
Alabama 217
Auburn 11
Georgia 6
Florida 3
South Carolina 1
Vanderbilt 1
Arkansas 1

Just gotta go prove ’em wrong, right?

If you can understand ranking USCJr ahead of UK, then why not UT? We have beaten them twice since the mid-80’s. If we start winning the “winnable” games, then I think the perception will change. Until then, this is the safe bet.

And for the record, I hope and believe they will prove the nay sayers wrong.

Yes, results on the field show UT beating us pretty consistently (until we prove otherwise), but we have definitely moved above USC a bit in the pecking order.

Agreed. I don’t think USC belongs ahead of us, based on recent performance.

Exactly, we should be 4th…maybe third. Until we beat UT a few times I can see why they are ahead. But we’ve owned SC lately.

why would they get any respect if it is not deserved. Kentucky, Barnhardt and the fanbase are not interested in playing football in the SEC. They only care about “bowl” games and beating louisville. Just looking at the numbers Kentucky’s football winning percentage in the SEC east are as follows: UF=.254, UGA=.188, UT=.254 and finally USC=.375. UK football only has a winning record against Missou and Vandy. This program doesn’t deserve respect especially from the other SEC schools until they actually compete and win “division games”, and “conference games”. This program is built like a MAC team and has been for years. You guys, most of you are living either in Kentucky or in cities with a huge kentucky fan base, you simply have no clue how little respect or even notice kentucky football gets outside of the blue bubble.

Pretty much the entire post was about how little respect Kentucky gets. And most of the comments generally reflect that most UK fans realize that until the team consistently wins, fans should not expect to be given the benefit of the doubt.

What I take issue with is your stance that our AD and the fans don’t care about playing football in the SEC. The money being poured into the program with renovations and the new practice facility show that everyone wants this team to succeed and they will do whatever they can (short of bringing hookers into their dorms) to succeed.

Built like a MAC team?! lol. Barnhart has poured a few hundred million into the program in the last few years and we are getting top 25 classes now. We are getting more respect in recruiting for sure. Florida and Ohio players are picking us over a lot of Big 10 and SEC schools. And UK just finished 10th in the directors cup (2nd in the SEC) so don’t say Barnhart doesn’t care about all sports. In fact we have one of the best programs in the country altogether.

Yes, the money is finally being put into making the program competitive. As a longtime fan of football and also alumni I will agree that there is something “different” about this current roll-out of the football program. But going back to the original point I can’t see why anyone is surprised with the prognostication. If this gets the players motivated to overachieve then great! More power to them! However when you have lost 30 games in a row to a single team (Florida) and have less than 10 SEC football wins over the last 10 years, if that doesn’t get on the bulletin board of the team locker room I am not sure how a projected 5th place finish by the media gets their blood boiling. As a long time football fan the only games that I “count” are division games and conference games. Win in the SEC and everything else, i.e. bowl games and beating louisville will take care of itself. I just think that the talent is already good enough to do better and it’s been good enough for at least 2-3 years to get one more SEC win, but the hump of Florida remains. We got to get over that hump!

UK has 10 SEC wins in the last 4 years. We went 4-4 last season and have beat SC 3 years in a row so should be ahead of them at least.

It is what it is-you can change the names, you can change the faces but you can’t change the bottom line. The record speaks for itself!

Yes, 4-4 last season and 3 straight over SC speaks for itself. Too bad the media didn’t look at the record. I don’t buy the SC hype. We should be 4th at least.

Why in the world would do you think them picking Tennessee over us is uncalled for?

  6. Respect is earned, not given. Just ask BEE-rad!!!

True, but we have beat SC 3 years in a row and this years team should be better than 4-4 in the league. I’d say we finish 3rd.

    • I hope so, but you can’t expect SEC or national media to believe until we’re consistently winning. Hopefully we will!!!

Yeah, that’s for sure. The future looks bright, though. Big recruiting weekend going on now.

It’s cute that mostly HookerUL fans post comments on UK football articles now.

You can’t take the media seriously when they pick IT to finish 3rd in the East but don’t give them a vote as SEC champion over USC or Vandy. It’s the media, so who cares..
