Kentucky Steamrolls #18 Tennessee 34-7 to Snap 17-Game Losing Streak in Knoxville

UK Athletics

UK Athletics

Two defensive touchdowns on three consecutive first half interceptions propelled Kentucky to its first victory over Tennessee at Neyland Stadium since 1984. The 34-7 win snaps a 17-game game losing streak in Knoxville, previously the longest active losing streak at one venue in FBS.

Kelvin Joseph was the first to get in on the fun, breaking on a hitch route to stroll 41 yards for a touchdown. Jamin Davis had to work a little harder, bumbling and stumbling 85 yards to reach the end zone. Tyrell Ajian’s interception on the next possession set up a Matt Ruffolo field goal that gave UK an early 17-0 lead.

Kentucky’s defense did not get much help from the offense in the first half. Ruffolo had to kick a field goal after Keaton Upshaw dropped a touchdown pass. In the first half the Wildcat offense accumulated just 75 yards on 25 plays (3 yards per play).

That all changed in the third quarter thanks to a competent passing game and Chris Rodriguez.

After forcing a three-and-out on Tennessee’s opening drive, the UK offense was ready to help the defense. Even though an 18-yard pass to Josh Ali on the first play of the drive was overturned, the longest Kentucky play of the day at the time, the Wildcats marched 76 yards down the field to score on a fade to Allen Dailey, his second big reception of the momentum-swinging drive.

Chris Rodriguez got UK into striking range on the drive that took the wind out of the Vols’ sails, going 42 yards on six carries to assume the role as Kentucky’s featured back. He finished the day with 13 carries for 73 yards and a score that put Kentucky up 34-7.

Kentucky’s defense gave up only 22 yards and one first down in the third quarter, forcing three Tennessee punts to start the route.

At halftime many Kentucky fans feared the worst. The Big Blue Nation had its heart ripped out one too many times. Instead, Kentucky found its offensive identity while the Wildcats’ defense pounced on wounded prey.

Few fans have ever seen Kentucky win in Knoxville. Few Kentucky football wins have ever been more satisfying.

Our defense is back! Two insane performances in a row from them. Offense looked better in the second half too.

What did Terry do to make you feel good today about having him as our starter going forward. Even with our D doing what they did Tenn. was still in the game until late because we had 73 yards of offense in the first half. That is not a winning QB. Sorry but gatewood and Allen should be starting if for anything to get them ready for next year and you can’t tell me they can’t do just as good if not better then what Terry is going. Why waste a year for both of them just because terry has some wins that should be contributed to our great D that year as well as our solid D today and last week.

You’re mistaking bad play calling for bad QB play.

This is a hard game to win at any level when the TEAM don’t play well! A lot of QBs lose games when their WRs are not at their best and their defense don’t play well! Terry has a pretty good winning percentage in case you didn’t know! This team is about 4 or 5 plays from 4-0! We had a great team in ‘18 and couldn’t do what these men did today! Proud of these Cats! Go Big Blue!

Gatewood has played 10 snaps- what’s HE DONE??? Lol…you’ve gotta be trolling. 14-5 that’s what Terry’s done.

Thank god for our D today. They stepped up big and I think they got the message after that ole miss game. Still think we need to go with Gatewood to give our team a chance to compete with the big boys because Terry is just not the guy to take us to the next level. Every game he has as a win was because of our D and the o Line. He managed that year pretty good but when it comes to winning games for us he just doesn’t give us anything special besides running the ball and everyone knows that. Great road win today. We are back on track.

Iv watched every game and can tell when a guy is good and when he can’t put the team on his back and win it for us. Bowden was better then him and all he did was run.

ANY QB who has a good game is because of the O-line.

Terry was succesful in 2nd half in showing he COULD be a down-field threat and it loosened up the rushing lanes to great effect.

Get rid of the drops and we win at least another game earlier this season.

2nd half is exactly what this offense should look like. Mix in passes on 1st and 2nd down and gaps suddenly open up in the running game. This staff has always figured out how to get the team to perform at its best, it’s just frustrating it takes them 3-4 games to do so every year. And we now see the issue on D the first 2 games wasn’t the ability of the secondary. It was disorganization. Being in the wrong spots, etc. Great all around football in that second half today.

Terry looked better in the 2nd half, not completely sold but would love for him to keep improving. We’re gonna need him because we should definitely be 4-0 and can still have a great season

Agreed. And I don’t think he’s super or anything, but too often he’s out in a terrible position to succeed passing. You can’t only throw when the entire world knows you have to. It opened everything up when we mixed those play action passes in on running downs to start the second half.

    Wins on Terry’s resume:
    @UofL
@Florida (ended longest overall losing streak in the nation)
@Tennessee (ended longest road losing streak in the nation)
    Penn State
Terry’s the guy. Case closed. I’m not saying he’s always awesome or even good but he’s more than earned his spot.

If Terry throws for a 150 yards a game we can keep winning with our ground game. He doesn’t have to do too much but just enough to keep the defense on their heels.

I’m happy, but it does suck knowing that if this defense showed up in the first two games, we’d be 4-0 with 2 top 25 wins and likely a top 10 team.
