Kentucky loses to Texas A&M in overtime

© John Glaser | USATSI

Well, that sucked. Kentucky’s undefeated start came to a screeching halt in College Station tonight, as the Aggies outlasted the Cats in overtime 20-14.

The defense did their best to keep Kentucky in the game, with Darius West scooping up Kellen Mond’s fumble and taking it to the house for a touchdown with four minutes left, but the offense couldn’t get anything going. In overtime, Benny Snell didn’t get a single possession and Miles Butler missed a 43-yard field goal. Kentucky definitely went conservative tonight, which I have a feeling Mark Stoops and Eddie Gran will field plenty of questions about in the postgame press conference.

Perspective doesn’t really help right now, but Kentucky is still 5-1 with a shot at the SEC East. Here are the postgame stats:

Our 3 weaknesses came back to get us, a horrible QB, a bad play caller, and a weak kicker

That about sums it up. Great defense getting wasted by QB play and play calling.

TT…did you watch this game? West scooped a fumble and scored. Also Gran has been conservative since he got here, why would this game be any different. Well it was different as he did not give the ball to the best RB in UK history when we only needed 2 yards. Not only is he conservative he also showed he is stupid.

How bad do you have to be to get yanked at QB? Can’t pass, can’t scramble, and can’t even throw the ball away. Have our back ups announced their transfer yet? If you can’t get into a game when he plays THAT bad, you aren’t EVER getting into a game. Worst performance I have seen in years.

Why would u come to UK if u were a real QB? It’s stupid! Go somewhere else bc we only play bad QB who are “athletic” and “tough” but not “cerebral” we leave that to Georgia and Alabama.

This is not Wilson’s fault. Under pressure all night long, poor play calling, no separation for WR’s, and Benny didn’t get enough touches in the first half or in the game in general. Worst call of the year in OT cost us any chance we had at winning. I place most of the blame of Eddie Gran’s play calling all night. Disappointing loss but we still had a chance in the end. Bye week at a great time.

He had several throws where he had tons of time but our WR routes must be horrible as seldom are any wide open in any game.

Not his fault? He can’t even throw the ball away. How the hell is that not his fault. His runs were terrible. His scrambles were terrible. His passes were awful. Yes, this was his fault even with terrible play calling.

Wilson showed me all I needed to see when he slid on 2nd down in OT with an easy first down.

    • mashburnfan1
      10:59 pm October 6, 2018 Permalink

I agree Nick, he actually looked very tentative running all night when the defenders got near him. Don’t know if it is turnover fear or just fear but SJ would have dove, flipped, lowered shoulder or whatever to get that 1st down, there would not have been a 3rd and 2.

We totally got what we deserved. gran and Stoops own this. We have the worst quarterback in the league hands-down not even close. They stack the box we are dead you think Derek Mason did not notice that? We could genuinely end up six and six in the liberty bowl if we do not put a quarterback in the game who can pass the ball because you have to pass the ball to set up the run, which I know and I am not paid $6 million a year to be a coach !

  9. KYjellyRoll

So at what point do we start looking at other qb gettin a few reps? Couldn’t have gotten any worse than that mess. New game plan for each opposing team, stop smell and you win.

    • makeitstop

They do not have the confidence to admit they made a mistake picking the quarterback… good coaches like, say Nick Saban, will change quarterbacks in an instant to win a football game because that is what they are paid to do…shitty coaches on the other hand stick with their original decision to prove they were right which in some cases they were not .

I was at the game, and if the officials would have called holding a couple of times when it occurred the outcome of the game might of been a different.

The officials were complete trash. That roughing the passer they called on josh Allen that led to their first score was pathetic. Sooooo many block in the backs and holding calls they just let go. F**k referees, F**k A&M. Keep your heads up and let’s win out this season. Go big blue!!!!

Sorry, but a couple of holding calls wouldn’t have made a difference.

Defense was very good but they were out there alot because they gave up 8 or 9 third down conversions. They allowed 50% or better on 3rd down which is horrible. Yes the O had 3 and outs but if we make a stop a few times the D is not on the field as much.

It looked to me the moment was to big for Wilson and Stoops. They should have never took the ball out of Snell’s hands. 3rd and 2 in overtime ain’t the time to be tricky with a qb with 5 games under his belt

Agree with both of you Alleykat and Nick.

Wilson was completely out-classed tonight. Makes you wonder if Hoad would have handled the pressure better.

And why Snell had his number called so few times is a mystery… I understand seeing what Wilson could do but when he proved he was out matched (mid 1st half), we should have gone back to a steady diet of Snell and Co. And, what happened to getting Conrad involved??? First couple of plays were great, then never again…

It may not have hurt to try Hoak but is no guarantee the loss would have been avoided. Hoak played horrible in High School vs every good team he played. With Wilson strubbling so much I think more running and maybe a reverse to Bowden could have worked. Also why no Conrad after 1st drive, Eddie is wasting some great talent. He looks good when he can just give it to Benny but when he has to call something else he is horrible. Then when he should do nothing but give it to Benny he does not. How ignorant can one be. Even at end of game Benny had a couple 10 yard runs. We had 3 timeouts, if he could have broken off a couple more we may have had a FG shot.

QB was exposed tonight. Hoak should get a good look this week in practice.

Wilson looked exactly like a Ju-Co player tonight. The O-line wasn’t at its best and he had no idea what to do under pressure. I don’t think he EVER threw the ball way and he ran very tentatively; actually looked like he pulled up a couple of times instead of lowering his shoulder.

Tonight wasn’t totally his fault but he raised serious doubts about his ability to play QB in the SEC at a high level.

So far this season he hasn’t had to do much other than give Benny and Co. the ball. When he did pass, he rarely did it well. His stats show as much. If he gets this flustered in the face of pressure he doesn’t belong back there.

Well 2 calls on us really hurt. One was correct and one was not. The false start on Logan when we had a 3rd and 2 hurt and he has done this with a false start or hold often. Then he runs his mouth, AGAIN, and gets an off setting penalty when maybe we could have gotten the call on just them. He learned nothing as he did the same thing, running mouth to a huge penaly, vs MSU. And both we were in scoring position prior to his penalty.
The hold on Price was horrible, especially when you see at least 3 clear holds they let go vs Josh Allen. We would have had a huge 1st down on their side of the field but no way Gran will get a 2nd and 20. Did not think it was a hold at all, and the ones they did on Allen were way more obvious.

Why not let Hoak have a shot? He sure couldn’t be any worse and it would spread out opposing teams because they would respect the pass a little more.

Right!! It’s really that simple. Coaches themselves out of a victory

All of this offensive carnage was done against a team that their pass defense is one of the worst in the nation.

Who coaches like this? Gran and company channeling Dusty Baker… can’t see when their guy is done. You got 2 QBs on the bench. One just barely lost the starting job to Wilson. Wake the flunk up!!! And try to coach to win so your defense doesn’t have to win it for you

I could tell by wilsons first rush or scrabble he wasn’t trying or something . That really set a negative tone, it seemed like to me

Screw you, Matt. WE may not have deserved to win, but we sure as hell didn’t deserve to lose. Combined with the usual fu***** by the Zebras and Drake Apparently out, even “overthinking Eddie” wouldn’t have had a chance to put us in this place. Kills me, cause T&AM is a good team and we went with them toe to toe, and except for possibly GA we might have gone all the way.

Yeah, stick the sour attitude up your know it all fat tush, Matt. Terry and Gran didn’t deserve to win, everyone else left it all on the field, thanks men, you fought like wildcats and I am proud of you.
