Kentucky falls to No. 20 in the Coaches Poll

The latest Coaches Poll has been released, and your Kentucky Wildcats saw a pretty solid drop following their six-point loss at Texas A&M on Saturday night.

After coming in at No. 15 last week, the Cats found themselves at No. 20 overall this afternoon, dropping five spots. This is the third consecutive week Kentucky has been in the rankings, the first time that has happened since 2007.

Elsewhere in the SEC, Alabama stuck around at No. 1, followed by Georgia at No. 2 and LSU at No. 12. Florida jumped all the way to No. 16 on the list, followed by Auburn at No. 21. Following their victory over the Cats, Texas A&M also reentered the poll at No. 22.

I’m not sure an overtime loss on the road as a 6.5-point underdog justifies a five-spot drop, but to each their own.

The AP Poll comes out at 2:00 p.m. ET.

With our QB ineptitude it is justified.

      Agreed.

It is obvious to anyone that UK needs a QB. Not another athletic RB.

UK has a national championship caliber Defense potentiality….

      Wilson is Terry Terrified…

Afraid of making a mistake… and throwing ducks.

All UK needs a an arm with the threat of going deep…

We will lose 3 more games if Terry continues to QB. He is no where near SEC caliber QB.

Should be out of the top 25…horrible coaching decisions to keep a nonproductive QB in the game!

Beat Georgia and we job all the way to the top. Real simple

Regardless of QB play, 5 spots is to many. The offense played like a vocational school for the blind and STILL took overtime for A&M to win.

Only because of the defense…not only stopping their Offense and also scoring for ours!!! That’s happened all Season!

They never wanted us in the polls to begin with. I’m surprised we didn’t drop out entirely.

Who is “they?” and why would they care one way or the other about UK being in the top 25? It’s a coaches poll – is there some kind of scheme among the voting coaches to “keep the Wildcats down?”

    • Bluebloodtoo
      2:23 pm October 7, 2018 Permalink

Scheme? No. But explain to me why at least 50% of the talking heads had UK losing every week this year. My take: it’s atypical for UK to have a good football team. They have no trust, and they largely shouldn’t have given our track record. We have to prove ourselves for a couple seasons to erase that distrust. A couple good games isn’t going to erase 30 years of ineptitude.

I’m 100% with you on your take. But, you said “they” didn’t want us in the polls to begin with and then you referenced “talking heads.” This article is about the coaches poll.

Terry Wilson is gonna need to learn to throw quickly before the next game because other teams are going to stack the box against him big time. Also, learn when to run and when to throw and if he runs to do so with a purpose and with aggression and less timidity.

The issue seemed to be him waiting a second too long to break for a run. Other than him looking just scared

      1:45 pm October 7, 2018 Permalink

If you remember early in the season, the coaches were getting on him for being too quick to tuck and run, and now we’re complaining that he is waiting for the play to develop about a second or two too long. If he finds that balance, I still think he’s a huge threat. I trust his arm, but he doesn’t. At this point, with Vandy coming up, I think he’ll get some good practice reps to sort that out more.

Wilson is a talented QB, but he’s essentially a freshman. He’s going to have ups and downs.

He can’t! If he does it’s an INTERCEPTION every time! He is not a naturally talented QB.

UK football will not get the benefit of the doubt until we do this for 2-3 years. We have to fight our way into national relevance. No one is going to lay out the red carpet for us.

Blown winnable games like yesterday’s is what hurts our national credibility.

Bluebloodtoo, I totally agree. We’ve seen this before and have been disappointed at the end of the season. I don’t expect that this year at all but it will take more than one good year for the “Experts” to give UK anything more than the Feel good story of the year.

    • ibescootch
      1:46 pm October 7, 2018 Permalink

If we win the games we’re supposed to, we’ll end at 10-2. I’d say that’s better than a feel good story!

I expected us to drop, but getting jumped by Florida is a travesty. I can’t believe I’m the first to bring this up.

You are not, I said last night UF will jump us in the polls. My point was who cares, the polls are a joke and mean nothing except a way to advertise televised games and get fans with little clue to think they do prove how good their team is. All the polls are is opinions of people, some who never even see a team they voted for play. NCAA is why I boycott Bowl games {although if UK gets to a Florida game I will go}, how does every level of football have a true playoff yet NCAA {for money} wants to keep the 1000 bowl games and let opinions determine 4 teams {mostly based on who will draw ratings} to play for a title. You have teams that did not win their division, did not even play for their conference title, playing for a National title. Joke. Bama did last year and OSU before that. Nebraska did it years ago. They just rewarded teams for losing and not having to play another big game. As we saw, UGA may have beaten Bama in SEC title game but Bama was never even in it.

Top 20 is not a bad thing. UK is in the top 20, and that is awesome for this team, in this league. There are dozens that wish they were top 20.
UK can be top 10, if they take care of what is in front of them, easily. Heal up this week, get ready for Vandy, and then UGA at home. Get that one, and we could be top 8.
    Go Cats.

It’s because our passing game was exploited by a legit defense. 20 is about right for us.

    • mashburnfan1
      2:57 pm October 7, 2018 Permalink

We have not had a passing game since Gran got here. Most of his play calls are going towards sidelines and are 2 yard passes or behind line of scrimmage. Take away the fluke 50 yard Bowen play {and we held on that play} and we had 100 yards offense for the game yesterday and less than 50 yards vs USC in 2nd half last week. Look at the yards these teams have given up and we got 150, less the 1 play, in 6 quarters, 25 yards per quarter. At Vandy game I will be watching the WR group to see our routes run, we seldom have anyone open.

A&M’s ‘goal’ was to shut Benny down, & they did. They keyed on him all night.
Terry needs to have a seat. He did not look like an SEC QB last night.
Players will make silly mistakes because they are learning.
Seasoned coaches should not make silly mistakes.
If UK had even an ‘average’ field goal kicker we would have won a game we had no business winning.
Defense continues to play like winners and BBN can be very proud of our defense this year.

Agree about the defense; but we should have won that game. A&M did not shut Benny down…Gran did.
He also shut down Conrad and Bowden.
If we had not lost yardage on 3rd and two, our average kicker would have made the FG…but A&M scored a TD.

    • mashburnfan1
      3:03 pm October 7, 2018 Permalink

Benny averaged 4.5 per carry, A&M did not stop him. He did not get the big 20 yard runs we normally see but they did not stop him, he only got 13 carries. Last I saw A&M was not the ones making play calls and saying don’t give it to Benny. And I think the biggest complaint is 3rd and 2 on OT, has to go to Benny. Listen I will give Gran credit, we knew A&M had a great run defense so he did try to get Wilson involved and 1st drive it worked. But after seeing how Wilson was playing you have to change your plan, adjust, adapt, do something different. Maybe go to what we are best at, Benny, Benny, Benny, Rose, Benny, Benny, Rose etc. Maybe try Hoak at QB, you hav to try something diferent as it was obvious to everyone in the world, except Gran, that Wilson did not have it and was scared. Sadly the only one that could have done something different, Gran, did nothing but put the game in Wilsons hands despite all the failures all night.

I think Gran’s plan was that TW would suddenly, magically, evolve before our very eyes into Tua Tagovailoa. Our offense was based on a pipe dream.
