Freddie Maggard has frequently called Kentucky center Jon Toth the Cats’ best offensive player. In fact, his offensive MVP the previous two seasons was Toth.
Even though earning praise from Freddie is no simple task, he didn’t start receiving true accolades until recently, making the preseason Rimington watch list before traveling to SEC Media Days. Without much hype, Athlon thinks he deserves it, naming Toth as one of the SEC’s 12 most underrated players.
Toth has been a fixture on Kentucky’s offensive line over the last three seasons. The Indiana native has started 35 consecutive games and was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list for the 2016 campaign. Toth should clear plenty of running lanes for dynamic running back Boom Williams this season, and the senior should rank as one of the SEC’s top linemen.
Freddie doesn’t believe Toth is underrated: “being labeled as underrated is a lapse in game film evaluation. Period.” The counter: somehow he didn’t make ANY preseason All-SEC Teams. But, there’s an easy way to explain the travesty: the media failed to evaluate game film.
Everyone around here knows Toth by now. If UK’s opponents don’t know his name until kickoff, by the time the game is over they will not soon forget.
