Joker Phillips is on the move

Mark Stoops’ predecessor is moving out of the Ohio Valley.

After spending two seasons coaching wide receivers for Luke Fickell at the University of Cincinnati, Football Scoop reports Joker Phillips will join Mike Locksley’s staff at Maryland.  At Cincinnati Joker recruited quite a few talented local prospects, many of which (like Jared Casey) ultimately committed to Kentucky.

College Park, Maryland will be Phillips’ fifth different coaching gig since he was terminated by Kentucky following the 2012 season.  He spent a season sharing wacky photoshops at Florida, controlling quality at Ohio State and losing with the Browns prior to his two-year Cincinnati stint.

Things have changed quite a bit around Lexington since Joker was representing the Cats in Bristol.

Joker’s a genuinely good guy, but I like our new coach better. A lot more winning happens now and games still matter late in the season

Super great guy, but a HORRIBLE head coach.

Joker was simply over his head and doesn’t have the skills to be a D1 head coach…

Good position coach and coordinator, but that doesn’t always translate to being a head coach. Up until this year, Stoops was being considered the same by many around here. Fine line between the positions I guess. Happy where we are, and hope Joker finds his niche.

I wish him well … but don’t plan on following his career.

Happy trails, Joker. Good luck at Maryland.

  6. I really hated that things didn’t work out for him at UK since he grew up in Kentucky. I know he wanted to win and make the program even better than it was under PawPaw.

    Good luck Joker!

Would it have been different if Joker had the kind of support (money and facilities) that Stoops has wisely used to build a team?
He did not have much to sell to kids when he was here.

No it would not have been. He’s not head coach material. He was a fine coordinator, and there is nothing wrong with that.
