Is Kentucky a realistic landing spot for Auburn quarterback and former top-40 recruit Joey Gatewood?

It’s certainly trending that way.

This morning on Kentucky Sports Radio, Matt Jones teased the potential transfer – without calling him out by name – to start the show before spilling the beans after the next break.

“It does look like the transfer thing is out,” Jones said. “It’s Joey Gatewood, the quarterback from Auburn that is transferring because Bo Nix has that job in perpetuity. He is looking at a number of schools, but I’m here to tell you, Kentucky is right there for him. Not just in the mix, and I’m not saying we’re the leader, I’m just telling you this is not just a list of schools and Kentucky is one of them. I’m telling you Kentucky is in. They have a very good shot at getting him. That doesn’t mean they will, and I’m not making a prediction, but I’m telling you it’s serious interest.”

Woody Wommack of Rivals.com also released a report highlighting potential transfer options for the former four-star quarterback, listing Kentucky first in the process.

Potential landing spots: Kentucky, Florida, Florida State. Gatewood’s Twitter activity appears to show interest in the Wildcats, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Florida schools get involved, especially after the Seminoles hire a new coach.

Taking a look at Gatewood’s recent social media activity, the former four-star prospect has recently followed Vince Marrow, Lynn Bowden, and Kelvin Joseph on Twitter.

Bowden also went back and retweeted Gatewood’s transfer announcement from October 30.

Gatewood, a Jacksonville, Florida native, was ESPN’s third-ranked dual-threat quarterback and No. 36 overall player in the 2018 recruting class.

The 6-foot-5, 233-pound redshirt freshman has appeared in seven contests this season, completing 5 of 7 passing attempts with two touchdowns to go with 29 rushes for 148 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Last week, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn commented on Gatewood’s decision to transfer, saying “he wants to be a starting quarterback.”

When 2019 five-star quarterback and true freshman Bo Nix won the starting job this summer, it became apparent that Gatewood would need to explore his options.

“Joey Gatewood has entered the transfer portal and decided to move on,” Malzahn said. “I really appreciate Joey, the thing about it, when he didn’t win the starting job earlier he chose to stick around. Most quarterbacks in this day and age in time would have quit, he didn’t do that. He is at a point now where he wants to be a starting quarterback. He wants to start looking at schools now so he can find the right spot, and I respect that. He is a fine young man and really respect everything he has done for our program and everyone will be rooting for him moving forward.”

Nix also weighed in on Gatewood’s decision on Saturday, telling reporters that “he was put in a bad situation” at Auburn.

“I think everybody was a little surprised [with the transfer news],” Nix said. “Joey, he’s a great guy. I really wish nothing but the best for him. I mean, he was put in a bad situation and so, I mean, I don’t know what he’s going through, nobody else on the team knows what he’s going through but when we’ve talked, he’s in a good spot, he feels like.”

Gatewood, who would likely need to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, would likely practice behind Kentucky quarterbacks Terry Wilson and Sawyer Smith next season before taking over as the team’s starter for his final two years of eligibility starting in 2021.

Needless to say, this could be massive news…

While we wait for an update, check out Gatewood’s ridiculous senior highlights:

Seems you’re forgetting we would have other QBs battling for the spot.

Yeah what does this mean for Beau Allen who we all thought was the future after Terry. Heck of a QB battle for those guys

Would love nothing more than to see a highly competent QB under center at UK. That would certainly put us in a position for success. Maybe then people would be justified with their chastisement of Gran, if it still applied.

Except as of now we have no idea how good he will be in college. Been many highly rated players in all sports that were not as good as their rating. I would love for him to come here, and hope he is that good. Is really stupid for you to say “would love nothing more than to see a highly competent QB under center” and take a shot at TW with a player that we have no idea how good he will be. In case you were not aware TW “put us in a position for success” several times, in fact as our starting QB he is 12-3 and that as a FR and SO in terms of SEC QB experience. TW helped us win at UF, #1 pick Tim Couch could not do that, in fact he lost 65-0 at UF. And if you can’t see that play calling is a problem here {especially once we get a lead}, and Gran is OC calling those plays, you are stupid or blind.

U mean the same Gran that has changed our offense multiple seasons after key injuries to QBs that forced a different style of play? Yeah he sucks.

Mash- read the d#$n article. This is not in competition with TW due to the transfer year of sitting out. I think TW is a good QB. The article suggests that this kid is a GREAT QB. maybe I chose the wrong words.
To everyone else, I’ve been on here many times defending Gran and I’m not bashing him in this statement. Chill the hell out people.

People who work in the business and u sweat and football respect Gran as both a person and a great offensive coach. People who are ignorant do not.

Allen is Good but this Kid was the #3 QB in nation overall and #30 player overall. Politics kept him from starting at AU. We will be contenders instantly for SEC EAST AND CFBP if we land him. He plays identical to Justin Fields they look like QB twins. We will be badass. Allen may transfer to get a starting spot somewhere else. I’ll take Gatewood every day all day!

Unsmart….what qb’s have they had to develop. The top ones they recruited backed out….Mac Jones, Jarren Williams etc. and are playing at major colleges so obviously the staff can see talent. Their big get in Drew Barker was great in the one half he played and we let him throw, then we went conservative and then he got hurt and never recovered from injury, plus he was not the most mature guy on earth. The staff quickly adjust and gets SJ to come here and he did ok, was tough as nails but was limited in passing dept which is why he was available. Then they scramble and find TW, who others wanted, he is basically a FR at major college level and we go 10-3 and win at UF and win Citrus Bowl and he improved as the year went on. TW comes out this year and looked improved but then the injury so we did not get to see how much he improved. I guess you think because we don’t have 4 quarterbacks ready to step in and win on spur of the moment the staff failed. Well news flash, several teams do not have 1 good qb and very few have 2 or more, is not like there are great qb’s just standing by waiting for teams. Look at Purdue and who has the qb guru coach most on here wanted UK to hire, they lost their starting QB and are 4-5 or so in the terrible Big 10, would be 2-7/1-8 in SEC Conf and they lot games before they lost their qb. What about WVU and their new coach who most on here also thought we should hire, building a program is a process and that process HAS to start on the O and D lines and that is what this staff has done. Build it the right way with depth at the most important positions first.

Bluevader, it says he was the #3 dual threat QB, not #3 overall. There is a difference. However, I want this guy! I love a guy his size who can run, similar to Terry.

If he comes we may have at least 1 qb transfer because Gilmore and Scalzo will hardly see pt next year(Wilson and Smith will be 1 and 2) and the year after that he’ll be eligible, older, have some experience in the SEC, have a year in the offense, and has already proven he can be a scoring threat in limited samples all things Stoops considers a high priority.

The year he is eligible Wilson and Smith are gone. Leaving Gatewood, Allen, Scalzo, and Gilmore. If anyone left i would thinkg Scalzo would just bc his personality isnt 3rd string

The guys that are on the roster didn’t come here to hand the spot to anyone. GTFOH if you think they’re just gonna leave without fighting for the starting spot. NO ONE is handed anything.

Stop counting people out just because of rumor and rankings. If this staff did that, we wouldn’t have been 10-3 last season. Allen wouldn’t have been here and played so amazing for us.

Tired of the BS. Some of these other kids will surprise you, just like Bowden has been.

Instantly playoff contenders. He is a clone or replica of JUSTIN FIELDS. We will be dynamic and can win the job out right soon as he steps on campus. 5* QB # 3QB in nation and #30 player overall in nation. Politics kept him from being starter in Auburn and AU might be undefeated if he was QB. He is getting the Fields treatment that Georgia dished out last year. We will be contenders for EAST and CFBP if we land him.

      “Instantly playoff contenders”

i love this team and this guy appears to be a great player. but geez. let’s pump the brakes just a tad shall we?

Jack, you’re already giving him the starting job in 2021 if he comes to UK? I would think Allen and others would like the chance to compete even if Gatewood does become a Wildcat.

I’m not going to say HE makes us a CFBP contender but he is the kind of talent we just don’t seem to get at QB. I think with TW next year we can make a run at UGA and Gatewood would potentially keep us at that level moving forward. I like it for the numbers of it, 2 Srs. 1 So, and 3 Fr. it would give Beau a couple years to learn and develop. Scalzo would likely transfer but I think Stoops would’ve gotten a JuCo guy next year for experience anyways. If we get him that can be huge in us making a spot on the upper SEC East in what would likely be the last few years of the East/West divisions.

If Stoops stays, we get him. If not, he goes with Stoops to FSU. Starting to think there’s a real good chance he’s gone. Will put us in great shape if he stays.

Would be great if we got Gatewood.

Stoops is usually less upbeat at his game week press conferences than he was at this last one. It’s entirely possible he could get the job offer elsewhere. That’ll put a spring in your step.

    Doesnt mean he’ll take it.

Terry Wilson was a 4star out of high school. Joey Gatewood is a TW type of prospect, so we do get those types of QBs. Both QBs didn’t get the starting job for their D1 teams right out of HS. Both are dual threat QBs.

Hope we get him, and that the staff stays. He’d fit right into the offense and it might help us land another great athlete and TE yet in this class. (We might get them anyway, but it would still help it for a 4star QB to transfer in.
