Hump Day Practice Notes from the Defense

Hatcher’s return will give defense experience

Jabari Johnson is the only player that has played at outside linebacker position before this season. Denzil Ware and Josh Allen have done a great job in the first game, but Hatcher’s return will be very impactful. Having two guys that have played OLB will be very helpful to a young linebacker core.

The difference between Florida’s two quarterbacks

Florida has been using the two-quarterback system and will be sticking with it for the game on Saturday. Will Grier is more of pocket passer player, while on the other hand Harris is athletic and has the ability to make plays with his feet. “But they’re both good at both of those things, though. Can’t count Grier out from running and can’t count Harris out from passing,” Eliot said.

Khalid Henderson has been a huge factor on the defense

Eliot noted that Henderson’s ability to add weight in the offseason has really helped him improve this season. Eliot said the transformation has helped Henderson in the run game, become a more physical tackler and get off blocks sooner. Eliot said that Henderson played his best game against South Carolina. “There’s a guy that’s had a lot of reps, a guy that’s had a lot of game reps, so there’s not many things he hasn’t seen, not many things he hasn’t reacted to, not many checks that he hasn’t made and that goes a long ways,” Eliot said.

The defense will be all over DeMarcus Robinson

Florida wide receiver, DeMarcus Robison, had a big game against Kentucky last year with 15 receptions for 216 yards and two touchdowns. Florida will be finding as many ways as possible to get Robinson the ball because he gets a lot of YAC (yards after the catch) yards. Eliot said that his defense will know where Robinson is at all times on the field. And after Robinson catches the ball, Eliot said, “we’ve got to swarm him and be from tacklers with him.”

Chris Westry’s mom loved that he won SEC Freshman of the Week

Westry said that his mom called him the day after and “was extremely ecstatic” about his honor. Westry could not stop smiling after he was asked this question. Just awesome.
