How the New Guys are Preparing for their Football Future

super bowl commercial

Two weeks from today, the football season will begin with the circus of media and fan day.  The  eyes of the fans will be on Mark Stoops’ 2014 recruiting class, the highest ranked class the BBN has ever seen.  Most of them will not be able to contribute immediately (after all, they are FRESHmen), but they’re doing everything they can to find the field.

–  Ryan Flannigan isn’t on campus, but he’s still doing work.  The biggest concern for the defense is filling the gap left by Avery Williamson at linebacker, which DJ Eliot reiterated today to the media today in Louisville.  The job will be left to either TreVaughn Paschal (returning from injury), Josh Forrest (only part-time experience), or JUCO transfer Ryan Flannigan.

Flannigan won’t be on campus until next week, but Eliot doesn’t believe Flannigan will be stuck behind the 8-ball.

“He’s doing the workout that he needs to do. I’ve been on the phone with him on a regular basis explaining the defense to him, so he’s gonna be ahead of the game before he gets here,” Eliot said.

–  Bulking up the Big Boys.  There aren’t any pictures posing with chains in the weight room (cough Iowa State), but the big boys have been getting after it this offseason.  Trimming the high school baby fat with new workouts and diets isn’t the easiest transition.  Neal Brown would like to give them a year to ease into their new lifestyle.

“We’d like to red-shirt all those O-linemen if we could. I think that’s important. We were able to do that last year and you were able to see Ramsey Meyers is a much better football player after red-shirting, sitting out and learning. Nick Haynes and a couple of those other guys also. So I think the freshmen really need that.”

–  It’s never to early to watch film.  Neal Brown said today that he needs one of the big wide receivers, Dorian Baker and Blake Bone, to “step up and play.”  Both guys seem to be taking all of the right steps to finding the field.

How many of the new recruits are already on campus?
Didn’t Brown give last year’s recruits a year to ease into things? It looked like he did anyway.
With all of these recruits over the last two years, will any juniors and seniors be good enough to get on the field?
    OR
is this another ‘waiit till next year’ season?
We’ve had about thirty four them.
    Does anyone really care?
Of course not, it’s only football.
(ever the above picture before it was cropped? The young man on the right is standing on a box).
I hope he goes on to be an all american. Time us little people got some awards. “The plane, the plane!!
Womder if any one knows where that came from?

For someone who isn’t paying much attention. That little guy on the right is T.V. Williams and he has 4.31 speed. He chose UK over Nebraska, Iowa, Oregon St., etc. Btw, most of the new recruits have been on campus since the beginning of summer and a number of them graduated high school early and enrolled at UK in Jan. They went through spring practice. Like I said, you would know this if you were paying attention. SMH. You belong on Fantasy Island.

Tell me 0le Sage, how many is ‘most’?
I didn’t say the young man couldn’t play the game. I knew what he can do.
      Try again
:”smarter than the rest of us”
you must have gone to Transy to be as ‘smart’ as you think you are.

I didn’t go to Transy but it wouldn’t take much to be smarter than you. I’m just sick of reading your negative inarticulate comments. In the future I will bypass them. In answer to your question, from what I have read the only newcomer who hasn’t been on campus this summer is Ryan Flannigan and that has been due to him being a JUCO transfer. He has been working out and learning the playbook while waiting for clearance from the powers that be. He is scheduled to arrive on campus Aug. 1.

Guys, guys – don’t humor him. It’s no fun if no one gets upset. Just ignore. A simple go to hell will suffice.

What do you mean is this another wait till next year? This is year 2 for Stoops and his staff and your unhappy unless he turns this around into a bowl team already? You sir are a fool to think that all the joker rejects that this team has can just magically be great in 2 years. Stoops will get this going but jackwagons like you will never be happy.

      2mites,
you might go back and review Kentucky’s football history.
How you ever heard a coach say ‘we have a good team”?
Spurrier said that about his at the SEC Media Days. Saban did too. So did Richt at Georgia.
I thought Billy Curry would get it going. Jerry Claiborne too. Didn’t have much faith in Mumme but when he left we were again trying to tread water. Pick a coach and fill in the total SEC wins he averaged. You might be amazed.
You can say Stoops is going to be the savior of the program, heck, go get a tattoo like the guy did naming last year’s basketball team National Champions.
What do ya think we’ll win this year? Last year Stoops went out on a limb and predicted ‘drastic improvement’. How’d that work for ya?
So far he got a million dollar raise for his recruiting. His second recruiting class will hit the field this fall.
We’re so sure he’s the answer, our athletic director decided to downsize the stadium. If he really thought we were going to be successful, why would he not wait till ‘next year’ and increase the ‘size for all the new ticket requests?
I aiin’t picking on ya. I was there saying the same things right after Curci left. Remember him? No. ask your grandfather. Het ‘ll remember him.
The second most repeated phase about Kentucky football, the first being, ‘Well, basketball starts soon’ is, ‘wait till next year’.
Don’t believe me? Hang around keep your ears clean. You’ll see what I mean.

UK has QB prospects getting outside info on how to be a passing QB. Do we have WR getting info on how to run routes and catch the ball?

Hey I’m not too old to learn. I’m sixty eight and a graduate from Morehead. There’s no way I’m as smart as you.
Tell me, the misinformed, simply basing my facts on Kentucky and SEC football history where I mislead the public.

Nick, instead of “It’s never to early”, the last section should say “It’s never too early”. Just pointing it out. Otherwise, this was a great article. 🙂
