Heroes’ Day’s Saturday Morning Wakeup

The Cats will try to get the season back on track in front of a crowd of military personnel and first responders at this year’s Heroes’ Day.  Tickets are available for all of our heroes and their families.  If you haven’t picked up your tickets yet, bring your service ID to the ticket office between Gates 9 and 10 starting at 10:00 a.m.

After giving up just shy of 90 points in the first two games of the season, nobody’s expecting a big crowd, but don’t let the weather keep you away.  In all forecasts there’s anywhere from a 60-80 percent chance of rain, but according to Google, the chances of rain are below 20%  between 1:00-8:00.

One person that’s probably already there is the BBN’s favorite former military man, Freddie Maggard.  If you can’t make it to the game, you can listen to Freddie’s commentary as Tom Leach’s right-hand man on the UK Radio Network.  Hopefully the change in routine won’t throw him off too much.  If you’re worried about a change in routine, here’s what the schedule will look like:

  • Noon- KSR Tailgate Show from the RV Lot
  • 1:45ish- The Cat Walk
  • 2:00- Countdown to Kickoff with Freddie Maggard & Christi Thomas
  • 2:30ish- Electric Blues with Mojo Tunes
  • 4:00- Kickoff on the SEC Alternate Channel with Jordan Rodgers on the call

NMSU is Without their Best Player

Coached by former UK quarterback Doug Martin, he’ll be without his best player this afternoon.  Larry Rose III broke the school’s single-season rushing record last season after only ten games, finishing his sophomore season with 1,651 yards and Third Team All-American honors.

The Cats need a big win.  They could have done it with Rose in the lineup, but his absence adds some insurance.

Will Anyone Join Jordan Jones?

Jordan Jones captured the hearts of the BBN after showing exceptional effort in the first two games of the season.  He’s third in the country in tackles with 28, never hesitating to throw his body around the field.  When the team faced adversity, he chose fight over flight.  The rest of his teammates chose flight.  Will anyone else answer the call?

To steal a line that Freddie stole, this team needs more players with that same fight.  “Of the eleven players on the field, at least 6 need to play like Jordan Jones. If this team ever gets all 11 playing like Jordan, look out.”

How Am I Just Noticing This?

Bill Self looks more like Bob Stoops’ brother than Mark, except for the hairpiece thing.

What College Gameday?

I’m hoping we”ll see some blue in the background of the Pizza Palace, but there’s no good reason to watch Gameday this week.  Instead, catch up on your favorite KSR podcasts.  The KSR Football Podcast from this week is one of our best.  If this week’s UK Radio color analyst isn’t good enough for you, Jeff Piecoro stopped by The Matt Jones Podcast to provide his thoughts on the early season struggle.

P.J. Washington is On Campus

Arguably my favorite recruit alongside Trae Young, power forward P.J. Washington is taking his official visit in Lexington this weekend.  If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching him play yet, imagine a more skilled Chuck Hayes that talks trash.  Scrapping for rebounds isn’t very entertaining, except when you watch Washington scrap for a win, then let his opponent know who won.

Here’s to hoping all goes well this weekend for Washington.  If it does, the Louisville-born prospect could bring along his AAU teammate, John Petty, to Lexington.

I Miss These Scooters

Thanks for the nostalgia, De’Aaron.

Shout out to My UK JOU Professors

Everyone hates a hypocrite.  This week, my former professors practiced what they preach, formally calling for President Capilouto to drop the lawsuit against the Kentucky Kernel.  If you don’t know the story yet, UK’s President has embarrassed himself and the university for refusing to release open records involving an alleged sexual assault by a professor.

On Thursday, the entire journalism faculty signed a letter to President Capilouto starting with, “We strongly object to your insulting treatment of the Kentucky Kernel and its editor.”

When I empty my wallet each month into the bottomless pit of student loans, it hurts less knowing I received a quality education from the finest people our Commonwealth has to offer.  If President Capilouto’s stubbornness persists after this action, he will lose the respect of me and thousands of other alumni who walked the halls of the Grehan Journalism Building,

High School Scores

Lightning messed with a bunch of Friday night games around Central Kentucky, most notably the Lafayette-Scott County matchup.  The game was halted at the beginning of the third quarter with Scott County leading 25-20.  Here are some scores that did reach the final:

  • Nov Cath 44, Beechwood 10
  • Owensboro Catholic 36, Apollo 12
  • Owensboro 36, Daviess County 6
  • Manual 13, Ballard 0
  • St. X 45, Highlands 18
  • Corbin 20, Southwestern 8
  • DeSales 27, Fern Creek 14

Where Can I Find More?

Dill pickle sunflower seeds are the best invention since the cotton gin.  I spent a week chewing on this bag non-stop, but the only place I’ve ever found them was at the Five-Star in Bardstown.  If anyone wants to hook a brother up, it’d be greatly appreciated. fullsizerender-60

“What Gameday?” The Gameday for a real football team with a real proven football coach. Yes, I know he messed around with a coed and lied about it. Everybody flubs their dub, at least once. Brainfart could have gotten this coach, but he chose an unproven coordinator. I can watch what I want to watch. I don’t need KSR or Nick to tell me what to watch.
