Happy birthday Rich Brooks!

Former UK head coach Rich Brooks turns 3/4 of a century today–that’s right, 75! You don’t look a day over 60, coach.

Brooks, one of UK’s most successful coaches in the modern era, retired from football in Lexington riding one of the program’s best streaks in recent memory, as they had reached four bowls in a row and won three of those. Hopefully coach Stoops can lift the program back to that level.

In addition to his prodigious history as head coach at Oregon, with the Rams and Falcons in the NFL, and at UK, coach Brooks also has a pretty strong Twitter game, so go ahead and give him a birthday shoutout and follow @UKcoachBrooks .

My top 3 Rich Brooks moments:

  • Stevie got Loose
  • Beating #1 LSU
  • Hitting the dougie with papa Brooks himself (sadly, no video)

That last one is the result of a familial tie–my aunt married coach Brooks’ son, Denny, a few years back when the dougie was in. So, at the wedding reception, of course I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hit the dance floor with my favorite football commander-in-chief. And I must add, coach Brooks’ wasn’t too shabby on the dance floor. Much better than olympian Gabby Douglas.

So here’s wishing a happy birthday to coach Brooks from myself, KSR, and the #BBN!

We should make him a Saint.

    • Agreed. Unfortunately we stubbed our toe against some teams we should have, or at least could have, beaten that year, especially Miss. St. For a while I thought for sure we would go to a better bowl than the Music City, but we stunk it up against Miss. St. (hangover from LSU win I guess…I think it was the next week) and failed to break the Spurrier and UT curses. But just the fact that we were in the top 5, had Spencer Tillman actually saying on national TV “Kentucky, you’ve got a national championship in your sights…don’t blow it!” and beat the #1 team/eventual national champ is nothing short of remarkable. It was totally surreal. I had to pinch myself and ask “Is this REALLY UK football we’re talking about, or am I dreaming?”

Some may not remember, and it is certainly worth bringing up if you do:
LSU lost two games that year. They lost to UK and Arkansas.
Not only did UK beat LSU. They beat the only other team to beat the eventual National Champions.
That was Rich Brooks signature season.
Happy Birthday Coach. Thank you for a great season.
