George Whitfield Jr. says Patrick Towles is committed to refining his tools

“Patrick Towles showed a lot of tools and the commitment to refining them,” George Whitfield Jr. tweeted late last night. As you know, Towles worked out with Whitfield last week at Whitfield Athletix, his specialized QB training academy in San Diego.

Other notable Whitfield trainees include Ben Roethlisberger, Donovan McNabb, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck and Johnny Football prior to this year’s NFL Draft.

Patty Ice is putting up a fight for the starting job in Lexington this fall.

Give the start to Drew Barker, let him suck for a year and dominate for 3.

Tired of giving anything to anyone. Make Drew earn it if he wants to play.

Loving the fight from this kid. Shows a lot of competitiveness and pride. That’s the kind of guy who hates losing. I feel good about the quarterback situation.

Certainly looks like we’ll see Towles as the starter for 3 years. Once he is named the starter, he won’t be replaced. Coaches hate doing that, unless he sucks real bad, but it looks like he’s working hard.

Barker can look forward to the starting job in the 2017 season, for a year, may be two if he redshirts. Looks like the Stoops & Barker sales spiel to recruits on immediate playing time, was all hot air, at least in Barker’s case.

The coach who guarantees playing time is the coach with credibility issues. No one should be guaranteed anything but the opportunity to compete for playing time. Drew will redshirt as he should and Reese will be a good backup. If Drew continues to work hard, he will get his opportunity to shine.

You’re a moron. There’s a difference in promising PT and promising the opportunity for immediate PT due to our roster shortcomings

Drew’s probably going to redshirt which is the best thing for he and the program. We will see him for atleast two years. If he works as hard as Pat is doing, could be more.

How can you not like the attitude of Towles, putting in the extra work to get better. That is what winners do. This is the kind of guy the Cats need at QB, one who wants to be the Man and a winner.

OMG! Do these writers on KSR have a man crush on this kid or what? Patty Ice what idiot came up with that nickname. My question would be, are there 3 guys vying for the starting job. How come this bias blog talks only about PATTY ICE. Just being an observant reader, I see that if your not born in the Commonwealth you do not stand a chance against Drew or Patrick with these writers.

I do think Drew is the future but Stoops cannot afford to throw him out there for a learning experience this year. They need the steadiest quarterback so we can try to get 5 to 6 wins , if we can achieve this we might lure in another top recruiting class which I hope includes Damien Harris. We need good recruiting classes every year to compete in the SEC.

Reece is a good solid backup QB. Being the #2 QB in an SEC school is better than being the starter at many other schools.

David, if you think KSR writers will influence who Brown and Stoops chooses as their starting QB, then you need to put down the pipe. Towles working out with Whitfield out West is definitely newsworthy. If Phillips was working out with the QB guru, he would be getting the same pub.

Last time I checked, Towles isn’t the one who has a DIARY posted on KSR. Credit is being given due to his hard work, nothing more. Shew…

NO. Last year they had a crush on Whitlow early on and then it seemed to lean toward Smith. This spring they were pushing for Barker to be their man.

Towles redshirt year seems to have really helped and I believe it was part of the Stoops/Brown plan not to waste another year for Towles on what they knew would be a bad season. Joker wasted Towles first year. Coming out of high school Towels was a highly recruited qb. Under Brown’s offense Towles had to change his throwing mechanics to more of a short and quick strike delivery. It seems to be working and thanks to hard work and good coaching he might just win the qb job.

Whoever wins the starting job under Stoops will have to earn it on the practice field. Some UK fans or maybe (trolls) needs to stop their hatred on Towles.

It’s refreshing to have a real competition between two genuine top-notch talents. If we ever want to be a good football program, we have to have that kind of competition at a lot of positions every year.

Anyone else find it interesting that the Ice man waits til his third year to get his arse in gear and actually take this thing seriously? Looks like the new kid on the block has lit the fire. Barker will be the man when the rubber hits the road by game 4. Mark it down.

Short of Patrick getting hurt, Drew won’t see the field. Probably won’t anyway with Reece being the backup. Glad Drew is on the team, now he needs to work on improving.

One thing I find interesting is that most UK fans can’t recognize the damage previous coaching staff did in coaching up what little talent they recruited. In Towles’ case they wasted his first year in not knowing how to handle his athletic talent. They were incompetent in evaluating and correcting good talent.

I believe Stoops and his staff recognized the talent in Towles and wanted him to redshirt and work on his throwing mechanics. This was long before Barker had committed to Ky. If Barker or Phillips can win the job then that’s good for the team but I don’t think for a minute Towles got serious because of the competition. He just wants to be the best he can be and this coaching staff deserves much of the credit.

Looks like the improved talent coming in has brought out the best in the rest of the players, Towles included.

Whitlow had to leave for this kid to move up. If he couldn’t pick it up in his prior time on the bench how can you say that he’s competitive. He might have the physical appearance but just falls short of being able to mentally progress thru the game situations. I’ll bet before season is over he’s watching game again with daddy.
