Gameday Travelers Beware of I-64 in Shelby County

Sitting in traffic is a good way to ruin the first Caturday of the year.  That’s exactly what will happen if you’re traveling from Louisville to Lexington and ignore this warning.

On weekday nights and weekends, 1-64 in Shelby County has been narrowed down to one lane of traffic.  The bane of my existence on a pair of Saturdays, it turned an hour and twenty minute drive to almost two and a half hours of misery.  After two stupid mistakes, I learned the alternate route that will prevent you from having a terrible Saturday stuck in traffic.

If you’re traveling to Kroger Field eastbound on I-64, take the exit following the Simpsonville outlet mall.  At the top of the exit ramp take a left onto onto KY-55.  It will lead you directly to U.S. 60.  By taking a right onto U.S. 60, you’re only a few miles away from Waddy, the ideal place to return to I-64.

Even though it may seem a little slow going through Shelbyville on the two lane road, bypassing the construction is a must.  It may not be quite as big of a mess on the way home, but you should still check your favorite traffic app before opting to bypass the Waddy exit for an excursion through Shelby County on U.S. 60.

Good news: they are halting construction for the Labor Day weekend. Keep the construction in mind for future games.

Well, what used to be a little known shortcut will now become the primary detour. good luck getting through that area now that 20,000 other people know about it.
