GAMEDAY: Short-handed Kentucky hits the road to take on top-ranked Alabama

David once defied all odds to slay Goliath. Hopefully Mark Stoops packed his sling shot for the Wildcats’ road trip to Tuscaloosa to take on the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Kickoff is set for 4 pm ET on the SEC Network.

Alabama is No. 1 again, but this year they’ve taken a different route to the peak of college football. Averaging 47.5 points per game, the Crimson Tide have the best scoring offense and passing offense in power five football. Mac Jones has turned into a Heisman Trophy candidate by completing more than 78% of his passes for a 210.32 passer rating, each ranking in the top three nationally. He creates big plays with the help of the most talented group of wide receivers in college football, led by Devonta Smith.

A difficult challenge under normal circumstances, Kentucky is seeking its first win in Tuscaloosa with a depleted roster.

We will not receive specifics from UK, but Friday night reports indicate that injuries and COVID-19 protocols have knocked out as many 16 Wildcats from this afternoon’s game, including running back Chris Rodriguez and linebacker Jamin Davis. That’s right, Kentucky is going to have to beat the best team in college football without their best offensive and defensive weapons. Kentucky’s linebackers and tight ends have been hit particularly hard by COVID-19 and the accompanying protocols.

The first significant COVID-19 blow to Kentucky’s football program could not have come at a worse time. Or is it? Winning at Alabama was already going to be an improbable task. At least they now Stoops has a reason to play the second team for the entire second half. Today’s game could get ugly.

Vegas, TV, Radio

The Wildcats are 32-point underdogs at Alabama, a place where the Wildcats have never won. The total is at 58, depending on where you place your wagers.

Tom Hart, Jordan Rogers and Cole Cubelic will be on the call for the SEC Network beginning at 4 pm ET. If you can’t watch all of the action, you can hear the Voice of the Wildcats, Tom Leach, on a variety of platforms.

The game may get ugly, but the Cats will look pretty in this specular blue-white-blue combination.

College Football on TV

This is a sentence I never thought I’d type: “The top-ten Indiana Hoosiers headline college football’s Saturday slate.”

  • Noon: #9 Indiana at #3 Ohio State on Fox

Big Blue Madness

The unusual COVID-19 edition of the event at Memorial Coliseum started later than usual thanks to an extended volleyball match between Georgia and Florida. Once the event got rolling, it was much of the same, with a twist. Instead of being introduced by the big-voice on the PA, the families of the women’s basketball team introduced the players, while former Wildcats introduced the men. The best part of BBM was removed from the videos UK shared (why, I do not know) yet there’s still plenty to consume the morning after if you could not stay up late for the event.

Isaiah Jackson isn’t fair

A human should not be able to jump from the free throw line and windmill dunk. Jackson is a freak in all the right ways.

NBA Free Agency Frenzy

Players could officially ink new deals starting Friday night. De’Aaron Fox was one of the first to put pen to paper, agreeing to an enormous five-year year deal the Sacramento Kings that could be worth up to $195.6 million. Insane.

Elsewhere around the league, Enes Kanter was traded from the Boston Celtics back to the Portland Trail Blazers. Patrick Patterson will run it back for one more year with the Clippers, while his former teammate, Louisville Cardinal and Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell, will now play for the other team in the Staples Center, sharing a backcourt with Anthony Davis on the Los Angeles Lakers.

High School Football Playoff Scores

Kroger’s KSR Game of the Week turned into a blowout with a 49-13 Pikeville victory over Sayre, but not every first round playoff game ended so lopsided.

Shame we don’t get a fair shot at Bama; too many key players out. Won’t have any chance of being somewhat competitive.

No need to watch or bother following. Apparently Coach Stoops has made a tactical move designed to forfeit this game and play for the last 2… beyond maddening!!!

Of course we play short handed, not that it freaking matters.

Amazing how in less than a week, 16 players SUDDENLY test postive for the less than 1% fatal illness, KING COVID!! Apparently Ky’s idiotic governor has pushed the scare narrative that KING COVID will destroy society and coaches must fall in line or lose their sport for the season… the U.S. has lost its way and is being ruled by fear… not the America I grew up in where we boldly faced and fought problems, not cowered in our basements praying our elected officials would tell us when it was safe to come out…

You do realize that they don’t have to test positive themselves? It’s the contact tracing that is killing sports.

Uh they is protocols that are set forth by the sec, it’s not like they can fake it or not follow the same rules that canceled four games last week. Some people are so idiotic about the coronavirus and is why we are where we are right now. Everyone needs to treat it seriously until they can get the vaccine out to everyone. No way the man stoops is, old school football, would back down and sit players and basically forfeit. Go cats and do your best cause no matter the score if you do your best I will be just as proud as any game. I do believe stoops does see some of the writing on the wall with offensive play calling though. We dont always know every assignment missed each play but he does so he is understanding why they struggle more than us shade tree coordinators. Gran is entrenched in our football culture now and not going anywhere so my proposal is this, gran rb coach schemes up the running game and all plays associated and bring in passing game coordinator/ co offensive coordinator to design the passing game and together with right hire could have best offensive scheme in country that can still pound the ball and eat clock but also be creative in the passing game. Gran is very good at the run game, not so much in passing game but hes no idiot in passing game and with right players his can work but we not consistently ever got those players so innovation is necessary. Late motions to make defense adjust last second and others stuff like this will be needed to keep defenses off balance against our slower receivers. Also I have been preaching all year that for less talented wr u need a very accurate passer and wilson or gatewood for all their talent just isnt that and beau allen as a true freshman needed to sit study and learn for future. We had an influx of talent at wr in this class and couple immediate impact guys in the incoming class for next will really make either QB a viable option next year but not this year and it hurts to have such a talented team that is off just a bit to prevent much better season. The missouri game was first without schlarman and I said before the game when announced he wasnt making trip that they knew writing on the wall was that if he couldn’t make it he wasnt gonna last much more. Brought whole team down and they had real life worries on they minds and missouri wasnt the focus unintended. I love this team and proud of what wilson has done for us and will never forget these past few years even if we make monster teams in future, these teams fought our past and old culture when it wasnt easy to take us higher down the road. We gonna have to show monster offensive improvements in passing if we gonna take the next step as program players not going to trust we can get them the ball downfield unless we prove it, then the talent will flow to the one missing part that’s really holding us down. I love the smash mouth old school football but balance is key to that success
