Former Arkansas Assistant Michael Smith will Replace Lamar Thomas as Wide Receivers Coach

247

Mark Stoops has made his first assistant coaching hire of the offseason.

Former Arkansas assistant Michael Smith will beome the Wildcats’ next wide receivers coach, according to Zach Barnett of Football Scoop.  Smith will replace Lamar Thomas after spending five seasons on Bret Bielema’s staff.

Smith previously worked with Stoops at Arizona.  He coached the running backs for a year and the receivers for another year, while Stoops called plays on the other side of the ball as his brother’s defensive coordinator.

Smith spent most of his coaching career working for his alma mater, Kansas State.  On the field, Smith was one of the best receivers to ever play in the Big Eight conference, finishing his career as the Big Eight’s second-leading receiver.  Smith was a Third Team All-American in 1991 and an honorable mention selection in 1989.  As a coach, he’s become a well-respected recruiter for finding talented players in the state of Louisiana.

Agree; his actions during the UL game were deplorable.

It is ludicrous to call Lamar Thomas a Petrino mole. There is real animosity between those guys.

Conspiracy theories about the UL game don’t pass muster, either. LT was separating players after a UK player threw a large object on the field. Hard to blame that on LT. Fan anger about an ugly loss to a rival is one thing. LT’s track record and body of work as a UK employee is another. Everyone who follows UK football knows Stoops requires his assistants to produce on the recruiting trail. That’s why Clinkscale still coaches for us and LT doesn’t. LT was never happy at UK, and it showed. He needed a change of scenery.

In any case, I like the hire of Smith, who is a teacher and a role model. Like LT, Smith excelled as a player. Our players will respect him and listen to him. Smith’s hire appears to signal a greater recruiting emphasis coming in Louisiana, Arkansas, and northern Texas. That’s a good thing.

Well then I guess they didn’t have him until the last sentence. Technically it was still a true statement.

    Cool……

I had nothing against Lamar Thomas, at all. I thought the position improved under him, for sure.

If nothing else comes from this hire, it does prove Stoops definitely has certain criteria he’s looking for when making a hire.

Impressive resume, though LT had an impressive resume. I hope he works out.
