Football Scoop calls Gran and Hinshaw to UK “an excellent hire”

If you’re just logging on to KSR today, Kentucky has a new offensive coordinator and a new quarterbacks coach in Eddie Gran and Darin Hinshaw. Gran alone is a solid hire, definitely the best Kentucky could do this offseason given his previous ties to Stoops, but the fact that he’s bringing Hinshaw with him sweetens the deal immensely. In fact,’s Scott Roussel went as far to call the combo “an excellent hire” for Kentucky:

“I thought Eddie Gran was a good hire for Kentucky. Think Gran and Hinshaw is an excellent hire. Hinshaw is so good with QBs and other coaches,” Roussel tweeted, adding that the hires are a “big win” for the Cats on his website.

Here’s the breakdown of responsibilities as we know it so far:

  • Eddie Gran: Offensive coordinator/”Head Coach of the Offense,” running backs
  • Darin Hinshaw: Co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks
  • Chad Scott: Wide receivers
  • John Schlarman: Offensive line
  • Vince Marrow: Tight ends, recruiting coordinator

That’s most likely probably definitely not final, so stay tuned.

Has Chad Scott coached receivers before? I still see Schlarman on the staff—>sigh

Yes. I’ve been hoping Schlarman would get replaced.

I included Schlarman on there because there haven’t been any major rumblings he’ll be replaced

No history of WR coaching but it doesn’t take a guru to teach “Catch the Ball” and “Don’t stop on your route”. I knew he taught his RB;how to block SEC linebackers so hopefully he can teach the WR to block because we will certainly need it on the outside this year.

I think Schlarman will be fine. The problem this year wasn’t as much development as it was depth. We have some nice linemen coming in. Had some injuries early that forced the young guys to step in and fill voids they weren’t necessarily ready for at the time. I’d give him another year with a new OC.

Speaking of the woeful O line play last year…. Even though Bill Curry was a fraud of a coach, he was a heck of an offensive lineman in the NFL. I remember Curry saying it was essential for an offensive line to have a set lineup, for a lineman to play with the same guy(s) beside him every game, for the same o linemen to get as many reps together as possible in practice.

So what did we see from our staff last year? Constant shuffling of offensive linemen nut just during every game, but every series. That drove me nuts and I guarantee was a big reason for all the false start penalties, sacks, and tackles for loss. Here’s hoping this new guy gets it….pick your best 5, let the supposed high performance guru get em in shape, and play the same 5 always.

Yes, there was a lot of shuffling on the offensive line last year, and that probably did cause some of the penalties, but the coaching staff wasn’t just shuffling players because they enjoyed it. More like constantly plugging the dike before it broke.

3rd eye, only partly true. I would never be able to find the quote, but Stoops said during the season that the substitutions on the o line were intended to keep them fresh. Which is b.s., since hardly any other teams feel the need to do that, and since in several games our offense didn’t log a lot of minutes.

I think Coach Scott is a good guy and a great coach; the players (for the most part) really seemed to like him, I hope he can do well at a new position in WR coach and that our RB core/recruits will be at ease with him changing positions.
HOPEFULLY, Eddie Gran will bring a few of his new recruits with him for the 2016 season!

Um, have you seen Cincy’s commitment list? No thanks, they can stay with Tuberville.

Good coaches know how to coach multiple positions. Chad Scott has all the makings of a really good coach.

I think Chad Scott has the toughest task now of anyone. I hope he cleans house, they are nothing more than a bunch of prima Donnas that drop everything thrown at them

Who is coaching Special Teams? I think the Hire(s) are excellent but I have questions. I have been watching all the bowl games and I have noticed that teams like Navy make decisions quickly and go with them. UK seems to always use it’s timeouts because nobody makes a quick decision. UK is and has been for years making stupid errors like 10 men on the field, delay of game and other stupid things. These must be all but eliminated to win games and get to 6 wins. 6 wins is the 1st and most important goal. the 2016 schedule is really difficult. As a former season ticket holder, I must see some results before I go again……

Hey blueballs, could you be talking about certain wide receivers?

    • blueballs80
      5:07 pm December 29, 2015 Permalink

Yup like Dorian Baker. Should have been benched for all those drops, whiffing on some blocks. He should have benched and others should have been given more chances to send the message across loud and clear.

Yep, I applauded Dawson’s firing if not nothing else than not benching Baker. Worse, he made him the number one option. But, let’s also not forget Bidet’s refusal to go over the middle.

The most encouraging thing about this hire is that Stoops and Gran worked together at FSU. We know they both produced there, so there is some actual data on this pair being able to work together successfully.

    • Kernel Sanders
      1:38 pm December 29, 2015 Permalink

Well except FSU had 4/5 star recruits across the board and we don’t have anywhere close to that. And I would take a 3 star Florida high school player over a 4 star KY or OH high school player. No comparison.

It would be nice if senior Gunner Kiel could come down for a fifth season, but between the tight SEC rules and his crazy transfer history, that’s probably not a possibility.

    • Kernel Sanders
      2:26 pm December 29, 2015 Permalink

No thanks. Kiel, aside from committing to indiana, LSU, going to Notre Dame before ending up at Cincy was rumored to be suspended from their bowl game for lets just say dependency issues. Pass on him.
