It has been 36 years since the Kentucky Wildcats have won a football game in Knoxville. UK’s 1984 season finale ended with a bang.
Kentucky punched Tennessee in the mouth on the first play of the game. David Thompson forced a fumble to put the Cats in scoring position. George Adams punched the ball into the end zone a few plays later and the Cats never looked back. Kentucky upended the 7-2 Vols 17-12 to seal a spot in the Hall of Fame Game.
Kentucky’s players celebrated by hoisting Jerry Claibourne onto their shoulders and carrying the victorious head coach off the field. Just two years after an 0-10-1 season, Kentucky won eight regular season games to complete one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college football history.
The Cats ultimately finished the season 9-3, ranked No. 19 after a 20-19 win over Wisconsin in the Hall of Fame Game. For more, you can watch a complete replay of Kentucky’s win on the UTV network below.
