Evaluating Jager Burton ahead of tonight’s announcement

Jager Burton will announce where he will play college football on Sunday night. The list of his potential destinations includes Alabama, Clemson, Oregon, Ohio State, and Kentucky. Burton’s commitment ceremony will take place at the KSBar and Grill. While it’s often been discussed, the significance of keeping the state’s top player at home is vital. Plus, the last two highly-rated offensive tackle prospects that call Lexington home elected to leave the Commonwealth. A three-peat would not be good.

But, Jager Burton is much more than a mere symbol of home-state recruiting competence. This kid can flat out play the game of football. Using a term from the NFL, Burton is a franchise player much like Landon Young and Drake Jackson. Let’s take a dive into an abbreviated evaluation of Jager Burton.

  • Flexible with the ability to bend and move when pulling across the line-of-scrimmage. This indicates preferred athletic ability as well as instinct to navigate trash in order to lead the ball carrier downfield.
  • High effort. Can be seen downfield blocking as far as 50 yards beyond the LOS.
  • Understands leverage and play’s intent. While having a heavy-handed punch, Burton also grasps the concept of merely turning the defender which give the ball carrier a crease. Frequently, this method results in a defender on his back.
  • Efficiently works to second level. See above, then moves to the second level in order to take on a linebacker. Here’s where I think Jager can play all 5 positions along the line-of-scrimmage. Extremely intelligent with an enormous Football IQ.
  • A technician with excellent feet, Burton also possesses that nasty streak that is necessary in the Southeastern Conference. Finishes blocks. Physical football player.
  • The kid “gets it.” Burton can often be seen volunteering in the Lexington community and speaking to various youth football teams. Mature past his years, take a few minutes and pull up one of his interviews and you’ll understand.
  • Playing his senior season right around 275 pounds. Will require weight gain which should not be a problem given his frame and work ethic.

Will have more on Jager Burton after this evening’s ceremony. Stay tuned and keep that refresh button readily available. It’s time.

If he does not commit to UK, this would be the biggest Vince Russo-esque swerve of all time, not just in recruiting. It will have out-swerved Russo himself. I would hate it, but I would tip my hat to him for having the unmitigated gall to do it.

Having said that, WELCOME TO THE BBN YOUNG MAN!!! It will be great to see you as the next anchor in the new tradition of the BB wall!

We flat out need this kid.
We’re about to lose Luke Fortner, Drake Jackson and Landon Young to eligibility, throw in Kinnard to the NFL draft and we are rebuilding 3 or 4 out of 5 pieces if the Big Blue Wall next season.

Jager will come in as a True Freshman and start every game if healthy for 3 or 4 seasons. Yes, he needs to gain weight, but I’ve seen guys like him gain 20 in a summer. Could easily be 295-300 by the time he’s playing at UK.

We need him. If he picks Alabama, it’ll be devastating to Mark and Vince.
