ESPN’s Edward Aschoff says UK will be the surprise team in the SEC

How big is SEC football? ESPN has five writers who cover the league, and this morning, they each picked one team they thought could shock some people. Edward Aschoff picked Kentucky, therefore he is our favorite. Here’s what he had to say:

Edward Aschoff: Kentucky

I like this Kentucky team. I don’t love it; it’s not a team that’s going to compete for the SEC East title, but the Wildcats will make a bowl game and pull and upset or two. Mark Stoops thinks his offense will be better with receiver Ryan Timmons heading a group of talented, yet unheralded, receivers. The secondary is getting more length from the freshmen, and the interior of the defensive line could be nasty with Melvin Lewis and Matt Elam. Watch out for Cory Johnson and Jason Hatcher on the outside. Kentucky will win seven games.

I’m not sure if Timmons is the first player that comes to mind in UK’s receiving corps, but I like Aschoff’s enthusiasm. The rest of the staff’s picks? Missouri, Texas A&M, and LSU. Check out their reasoning at the Worldwide Leader.

Who picked Mizzou? How can a two-time defending East champ be a surprise?

Anyway, glad to see the Cats gettin’ some love.

would have to agree with you about Mizzou… They’re not “surprising” anyone anymore. I believe everyone in the SEC is well aware of them. Love his prediction of 7 wins.

That is true, he is potentially great, if can hold on to the football!

Disagree, I would say Boom Williams and Patrick Towles are the biggest offensive threats.

    If he is healthy

Why would they not say timmons? He has been their leading receiver the last two years. The KSR bias towards Timmons is sad. If you remember you were all over him three years ago out of high school begging him to come to UK. He is healthy this year and will produce bug numbers………….. Just wait on it

Timmons is #2 on the depth chart behind Garrett Johnson right now, which is why I said he isn’t the first receiver that comes to mind. There is no bias. We all hope Ryan has a huge year.

I think 7 games is possible. I’m just hoping for 6. But the staff is still very optimistic behind the scenes. They are definitely thinking 6-7 wins and a decent bowl destination.

We were literally two plays away from 7-5 last season. We can definitely get there this season.

ESPN should hire me. My grammar is on point compared to this guy. Love his enthusiasm though! Go Cats!

You forgot to use a comma after ‘enthusiasm’, which is also a sentence fragment. 😉

KSR has something against Timmons. Not sure what it is. But the fact he led the team in yards last year, while being injured over half the year, as well as being the focus of every team’s defense, speaks of his will and skill. And yet you still put all praise on the unproven receivers. It’s almost sickening.

He’s #2 on the depth chart. See Mrs. T’s comment above. Try reading the rest of the comment section before you post next time.

My point is, it’s fairly obvious why the author suggests Timmons. He is a junior that led the team in yards last season, among returning players who did not have half of his yards with a clean bill of health. Also, he was number 2 on the depth chart for much of last season.

We certainly all hope Timmons has the kind of year we believe he is capable of. However, he really hurt us last year with drops at the most inopportune times. I can think of 3 interceptions caused by a ball bouncing off his chest. He was our best, by a long shot, at separating himself from the defender but his inability to catch the ball consistantly got him benched. At least 2 losses could have been avoided had he caught a perfectly thrown ball

Nobody has anything against Ryan Timmons. Its the fact that most people realize Timmons is not the most talented receiver on the team. He is far from consistent. Even our own football coaches have said that he lacks consistency and it remains to be seen how big of a contributor he will be this year.

This guy just saw Timmons name on the stat sheet and threw it out there. He knows nothing about UK, like most other national media guys when it comes to football. Anyone who covers the team locally would not name Timmons over Towles or Williams.

Give him a break. He was a sophomore dealing with injuries and played through them to lead the team in several categories. Thank you Aschoff for giving him the pub he deserves. He is going to prove a bunch of people wrong this year. I don’t understand where the hate for Ryan is coming from? The coaches said he was inconsistent, so what? They are trying to motivate him. He is the next Cobb for UK football. You don’t know football if you can’t respect what he did last year as an injured sophomore.
