Sitting at 2-1, 1-1 in the SEC, the Cats are looking to move into good position in the SEC East with a win against the Tigers tonight. UK hasn’t beaten Mizzou since they joined the conference back in 2012, going 0-3 against the Tigers since their SEC inception. If we plan on coming out of Commonwealth with our first SEC win over a top-25 Missouri team, the containment of Mr. Mauk and the Tiger offense has to be a priority.
Mauk has been a big reason for the success Missouri has had lately against the Cats, amassing 7 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in his performances. Those numbers are deceiving because he isn’t the accurate and precise QB he appears to be. He’s a middle range SEC quarterback on a team with an elite defense who pulls them through the games, then Mauk wakes up with 5 minutes left and for game-winning heroics.
Mauk has totaled 41 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in his career through the air, but has also accounted for over 700 yards and 4 other touchdowns with his feet. The Cats have to have consistent pressure coming off the ends throughout the game to contain Mauk’s running ability. Last week we struggled against a running Grier, and this guy is more experienced and more talented. He has been contained on the ground in all but one game this season, where he ran for 75 yards on 10 carries against Arkansas State.
If we can contain Mauk in the pocket and get him to turn the ball over in the passing game, I feel good about the Cats chances in this game. They’re worse, and we’re better than we were last year. We owe ya one, Maty.
