EKU kicker leaves team due to staff’s lack of COVID-19 protocols, testing: “[They] do not care about player safety”

The Eastern Kentucky football is under fire after one of the team’s kickers, Landon White, announced Tuesday he was leaving the program due to a lack of care for player safety within the team.

White, a redshirt junior, posted on his Instagram page that he is resigning from the team because the team’s head coach, Walt Wells, along with other staff members “do not care about player safety.”

“8-4-20. My last day is finally here,” White wrote. “Today I have resigned my position on the Eastern Kentucky University football team as a kicker. Not huge news in the sports world I know but… No matter what you hear the facts are the facts, with the main fact being the coach and some staff, do not care about player safety. I will surely miss my brothers on the field. This is a tough day for me, but somebody has gotta tell the truth on what us athletes are going through during this pandemic.”

According to White’s statement, the football program conducts “little to no testing” for COVID-19, with the last team test being administered on July 6.

“Symptomatic players still in the building and around other teammates,” said White. “But the same day people had symptoms we continued to practice instead of face the issue head on. Keep in mind we started fall camp on Friday July 31st. We have plenty of players and staff test positive over the past month. But you have probably heard very little on the matter.

“Have y’all heard about us suspending anything? Of course not. There are meeting rooms with 100+ players and staff crammed into it with zero space and no social distancing rules in sight. There are a bunch of potential positives in there. The Player cafeteria (case dining hall) endangers the EKU Cafeteria staff as well as other students who are now on campus, masks are routinely not worn while players are constantly being reminded by the dining hall staff instead of our coaches to keep it on.”

White then went on to criticize coach Walt Wells, who served as a quality control assistant at the University of Kentucky during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, about only caring for the “[$500,000] we are about to earn by playing WVU in Morgantown at the end of the month.”

“The Head Coach knows and the Head Coach does nothing,” said White. “The Head Coach does not care about his players safety as well as his staff and their families. He cares about the 500k we are about to earn by playing WVU in Morgantown at the end of the month. The truth has to be told and I’ll be your guy.

“I love my teammates as well as my family and I’ll forever cherish the l moments I had with them. With 2 pregnant sisters, 3 nieces and a nephew, and a mom & dad as well as my Grandmother and grandfather I love dearly, I need to protect them at ALL cost. I will not endanger anyones health by continuing to play. This goes for my players family and my family.

“People need to know what the NCAA and University is really about and it’s not about player safety.”

Late Tuesday evening, KSR received two statements from individuals close to the Eastern Kentucky football program, with one claiming the staff is “doing as good of a job as any” to enforce COVID-19 protocols and procedures, while the other addressed similar concerns White expressed in his Instagram post.

“The coaches and support staff are doing as good of a job as any staff could in regard to player safety,” the first source close to the EKU football program told KSR. “Masks are required at all functions at all times. Social distancing is being enforced at a high level on and off the field. There is a symptoms and temperature check every day as we enter the facility. I feel perfectly safe being involved and participating with EKU football and look forward to our season.”

“I can confirm that the last time the whole team was tested was July 6th,” the second source told KSR. “We were not retested before camp started 25 days later and still have yet to be retested. A couple of players were on the field for pre practice and were presenting symptoms that the training staff knew about. After those players were told to leave a few minutes into walkthroughs, practice resumed as usual. Also, masks are often not worn by coaches in meetings, nor by players when inside the locker room.”

EKU Athletics announced six positive COVID-19 cases among athletes and staff back on Thursday, July 2, with the Eastern Progress reporting an additional ten cases on July 18. EKU Athletics provided another update on July 28, which claimed no new positive cases were found from 210 new tests.

Okay snowflake. You conservatives are all the same special brand of snowflake too, lol. Someone cares about themselves and science (facts), you get so triggered you just can’t help but personally stack them for doing what is right. Don’t you have some essential oils to sniff out some meeting at Bubba’s garage about how 5g is gonna turn us all gay or something?

The data is fraudulent, the numbers have been grossly skewed, doctors are being coerced to code deaths as covid regardless of whether the patient has been tested or not and regardless of the actual cause of death. If the truth were being reported by the MSM why would there be a need to censor any other data that does not support the official narrative? When did we become ok with censorship? Look up the first amendment.

nocode, there are doctors and scientists that don’t go along with the company/government line on all this. I have a question for you: do you believe the science that says an unborn baby is a baby, and that there are 2 genders, and that you can’t be the other just because you say so?

More like a real man. Willing to step up and actually say something when idiots coaches are not doing the right thing. No tests since July 7th. What a joke. Risking everyone’s health and especially his own families health. Needs to be more men like him.

It really should be harder for people this stupid to be able to share their opinions online. It’s like that school stereotype of the “cool” kids doing whatever they want while the nerds make sure the project gets done. Except in this case, the “cool” kids are propagating a dangerous virus that will kill many people.

Sadly, this kid was likely not a very good kicker and EKU probably had a few other studs that were much better. We’ve seen this before. My guess is that he is taking his frustration out on the EKU coaches. IF what he says is in fact true, then why not go to the Athletic Director at EKU, rather than throwing the football program under the bus. This IS a bunch of liberal crap…..copycat stupid antics of a ticked off kid….nothing more. Good luck getting a kicking job anywhere else. This is about HOW you handle the situation. Hope he learns a great big lesson.

It’s all over. Kids from different schools are reporting coaches for not doing the right thing. Not doing what they are supposed to be doing. But if you come in here people will try and convince you they are cupcakes or we’re not gonna okay anyway. I’m sure that’s what the 1000 big ten players are also.

I’ve had Covid for over two weeks. I haven’t taken a sick day since I’ve been working at my current job for 6.5+ years until this. It is brutal. Fever, hard to breathe, migraines, vision issues. I’m 48 and in good shape. Run 3-5 times a week and lift weights. We’ve been very cautious and I still caught it. Thank goodness my wife and son did not. If you think this is hoax, DM me on Twitter and I’ll give you my address here in Florida and you can come over and I’ll cough on you.

Hang in there satch. I’ve been sick for 8 weeks. Went to hospital one time, but mostly have been at home. Been though every symptom imaginable and keep relapsing every time I get a glimpse of getting better. I’m 47, pretty healthy, work out 4/5 times a week, and don’t like missing work either. Hopefully you will start to get better sooner than I have.

I was at hospital. Now I’m home. Recovering. Hit me really hard. Went from the absolute worst flu I’ve ever had for two weeks to pneumonia to now what I can only describe as exhaustion beyond belief. I feel a ton better now than I did 2/3 weeks ago. Just a long process for me.
