Darryl Long to transer; Regie Meant may miss season

Left: Darryl Long; Right: Regie Meant

More breaking news from the football training center: Mark Stoops just announced that sophomore tight end Darryl Long will transfer. Long redshirted his freshman season and played in ten games last year as a reserve tight end and contributor on special teams.

Additionally, Stoops also said junior defensive tackle Regie Meant will be out indefinitely for “personal reasons.” Stoops said Meant is “totally removed” from the program right now and he’s not sure if he’ll be back at all this season. Last season, Meant had 31 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss and one sack. He was considered one of UK’s top returners at his position.

While this is a major, major blow to an already vulnerable defensive line, our thoughts are with Meant during what sounds like a very difficult time.

Long is no big deal. He had been usurped by better players.

Losing Meant is devastating. I figure it will cost us Ws. What is going on there? Is there no chance he plays? Its tough to say that any one player could ruin the season, but that may be what we’re looking at here.

Losing guys like this is killer in terms of special teams. A non-starter with experience is exactly what you want.

This is not how a promising season should start. Two transfers and another unknown issue sidelining a major defensive contributor.
Negative vibes are no good. Negative vibes are not how you build a football program or land top notch recruits.
Year four Coach Stoops. Show me, 9/3/16, we’re better.

The transfers are irrelevant. They were position players who were getting buried on the depth chart because we are getting so much better.

Meant, on the other hand, is devastating. You can’t blame it on Stoops until we have more information. Right now there is none. The vibes were overwhelmingly positive until an hour ago.

I agree that you can’t blame Stoops and the coaches for individual players that have personal issues. My concern though is that it is year 4, and our DL continues to be a major weakness with low quality depth despite the fact that it is one of the few positions that hasn’t had any coaching turnover. Without Meant our DL goes from below average to just plain mediocre unless one of the backups can play miraculously, and some of that blame has to go on the coaching staff.

I don’t get why the DL guys doesn’t get some heat. UofL consistently cranks out NFL draft picks from the DL. Brumbaugh can only get guys drafted that came from JC. Maybe he’s the problem.

Totally hate it for both Darryl and Regie. I can’t blame Daryl for wanting to go somewhere where he can be a major contributor.I do wish him well, he will be missed. He was a blocking machine.

Losing Meant, is a potential devastating situation. Defense wins games, and without him, that task is much more difficult than ever. Without Regie, the schedule just got tougher. The D Line had to have a season void of injuries and issues to have a chance at being effective this year. So much for that. Losing Reggie is a huge hit for the defense, and the entire team.

Next guy, needs to step up. No excuses for not being ready. After four years, having no depth on the D Line, not a lot you can say as a coach about this situation. This is especially true since you were hired for your defensive prowess, and recruiting capabilities. Hoping the next guy up will be successful taking over and playing DE.

Wishing the best for both Darryl and Regie. I hope things go well for them both.

Solid football comments. Kids want to play, but if Long has used his redshirt, won’t he have to drop divisions to play right away and not lose a year. Losing Meant is big, D-Lineman are so prone to being dinged up by O-Lineman blocking down on them, the O and D lines are tough places to play, they should get more credit than they do. Hopefully something steps up but they are going to be young, not good. Predicted seven regular season wins but the team is not in a position to take major hits to any position especially the lines.

Anyone that thinks 7 wins was going to happen is absolutely out of their freakin mind, over the top, blinders on.

This team is a 3-4 win team against this schedule.

    The only wins are:
    NM St
    Missouri
    Austin Peay
    Possible wins:
    Southern Miss
    South Carolina

The rest are absolute losses with no questions about it whatsoever.

And if there are a couple of injuries at certain spots it’s gonna be a 2 win season.

Kentucky football is in the dumpster.

You’re a troll. We have the most talented roster in ages, with better recruits coming each year. Meant is a major blow, but you’re just a pessimist.

I will not go as far as to proclaiming UK will win 6-7 games, however, at this point, I think 5 or more losses is inexcusable.

There are those that will raise the Joker issue, but, in fact, 4th year, we should be past that excuse. If not, then it is time to blame the guy that handed Stoops the program to run, with a crazy money contract.

UK BIG BOARD UPDATE, I saw you at UofL’s open practice yesterday. Guys this is for real. At one point Lamar Jackson threw a beautiful ball 60 yards in the air for a touchdown. I looked up and UK Big Board Update had run onto the field. He was weeping profusely. He ran up to coach Petrino and shook his hand, saying “My God! You really are a genius.” The next thing I knew he had Lamar Jackson in a bear hug and was pledging his allegiance to the mighty cardinals. He ripped off his “Stoops Troops” t-shirt right then and there. The last I saw of him he was embracing Tom Jurich and trembling visibly.

Ladies and Gentlemen, UK Big Board Update is a cardinal troll!

I hate this for the team! In college football you have to be prepared from a depth standpoint for injuries, transfers, and dismissals. However, you also need some breaks to go your way, and that just NEVER seems to happen for our program. Just when things start to look greener, something like this happens. We simply need to keep building solid depth, and hope that we can catch a break or TEN to get us out of football purgatory. I am keeping faith, but the realist in me simply thinks we are cursed to simply mediocre at best. Prove me wrong boys!!! Maybe Reggie will be back for part of the season…..prayers go out to him!

It takes 5 or 6 years to build a program from scratch and recruiting has to be really good all those years. Why can’t we remember UK had one of the worst teams in football his last year. Joker signed players that were no stars, 1 star and 2 stars for the most part. Even with mostly 4 and 5 stars the team would still be shaky because of lack of depth at every position so yes Joker is still influencing the team. Teams that are a perennial power can build quicker than UK. Stoops is recruiting many quality players, but they have to mature, stay healthy and stay out of trouble.

I beg to differ. You want to blame somebody for the shape of the program, you start with the guy that made him head coach in waiting, hired him, and waited 3 freaking years of absolute poorly managing the program before terminating Joker.
I am no Joker fan, and had no faith in that move.
However, after three years, Stoops has not put up the numbers Joker has. Stoops has had better contracts, better facilities and better resources than Joker ever had to work with. Stoops has had better players to work with.
After 3 years, it is not like I am expecting to go to the Sugar Bowl, but I sure as heck expect 11 players on the field every play, and no headcases.
So can it with the Joker BS. This guy needs to step it up, and waiting 5-6 years to be bowl eligible, is bovine scattology. 5-6 years should have us playing for something big after the first of the year. We will see how much the AD cares about the direction of the football program if we are not playing in the better holiday bowls.
The NCAA is loaded with Football coaches, in simalar or worse situations, that has had their team in bowls much sooner, with far less than what Stoops has had to work with since day one.
Now Stoops is alluding to how tough the conference is to win in. I suppose he realizes blaming someone else for his lack of success has run out.
He makes millions. I hope he is worth it.

This is loser thinking. It might take 5-6 years to have winning record in the SEC, but it shouldn’t take 5-6 years to beat Vandy, WKU, EKU, and UofL.

Here’s my prediction, 5 wins this year, 7 wins the year after that. And just when the program is finally getting on a roll, Stoops will say, “screw you haters, I’m going elsewhere”.
