Darius West Is Out for the Season

Mark Stoops announced after today’s scrimmage that Darius West will likely miss the 2016 season after injuring his knee.  It is not the same knee that plagued West when he arrived to UK.

West began fall camp alongside Blake McClain as the #1 free safety.  Stoops said McClain and fellow senior Marcus McWilson will compete to fill that position.  West’s absence will also be felt in special teams where he acquired most of his 17 tackles in 2015.

Stoops also reported that Blake Bone is dealing with a hamstring injury and Mikel Horton injured his ankle, one that could be pretty serious.

Maybe Jim Mora isn’t so ludicrous after all, aye Nick?

As someone who is very involved in the sport and the rules of the sport, I have never seen a period of such change ever in my 20+ years of experience. The culture is changing completely and the Jim Mora type thinking will become more and more common as coaches change with the game. When I read Nick’s blog about what Mora is doing at UCLA, I was shocked at how easily he dismissed the idea. I’m not saying it’s what everyone should do butbMora knows his team and knows he has a veteran squad. He obviously weighed the pros and cons of the situation and came to the conclusion that having an injury free team to start the season was the right move for him and his squad.

I tend to lean toward yours and Mora’s thinking as well, brother! The numbers on my team are not good, and any injury really affects us. As a result, we very rarely take each other to the ground during practice. In the last two years, we have incorporated Pete Carroll and the Seahawks’ rugby style tackling to try and take the head out of the tackle.

Really feel bad for Darius! I hope his recovery is a quick one, and he will be ready to go next fall. Injuries are one thing this defense can’t afford, given our lack of depth and inexperience. Thank goodness we do have some quality depth in our secondary.
