Damien Harris says UK Football needed a lot more help than he could have given

damienharris

Everyone on Twitter had an opinion on Kevin Durant’s decision to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Golden State Warriors yesterday, including Damien Harris. The Berea native, who chose Alabama over Kentucky and Ohio State, called Durant “weak” for joining a team he couldn’t beat:

Apparently, one Kentucky fan is not over the five-star running back choosing Bama over his home state school and fired back (that tweet has since been deleted, but we have its imprint):

@DHx34 it’s weak on your part to leave your home state when u could’ve helped them win a title. BBN

– Lil Rob (@rob3_lil) July 4, 2016

How did Harris, who will probably be named Alabama’s starting running back, respond?

I mean, it hurts, but he’s right.

Couldn’t agree more with him. We have maybe less than ten players on our entire roster that could compete to even see the field for Alabama. It would take about 30 Harris caliber players to even get us a chance to start competing for a championship. I mean, even southern miss is ranked 20 spots better. Southern freaking miss.

Sure that’s a true statement, but what is to be gained from responding to a bitter fan? Why rub it in instead of ignoring the tweet?

How is he rubbing it in? By using the truth to shut down an immature “fan” who has no business communicating with him anyway? I’m sure he has ignored a lifetime’s worth of dumb tweets.

Its a difficult concept for you to grasp, but I’ll spell it out for you.

You see, cats paw, the UK administration, athletics department, alumni, students, and fans, would like to see our university have what they call ‘integrity’. Not hire some scumbag, dbag asshole who makes our program look like filth, unlike the commuter school down 64. They don’t care, as has been made obvious time and time and time and time again.

See: hooker scandal, abortion scandal, motorcycle scandal, FBI investigations, Mexican parties. etc…..

Good luck with that 1-8 record. Maybe this’ll be your regular season championship year. That is, if Pitino is still the coach. #hookers #LOL

Yes! it would take more than just you Damien, but you have you have to start somewhere! Your commitment would have led to more talent coming to KY. How can you criticize KD, when you did the exact same thing? You both had the right to do so, but not to get on social media and act like you are above this kind of action.

Well his point makes sense. He wanted a chance at getting a ring with him possibly being the feature back so he left. At UK, he knows that possibility is slim, very slim. I fear his tweet would have some negative effect on the coaches and recruiting. Clearly he didn’t think highly of the coaching staff.

    • ClutchCargo

I don’t see anything in his tweet that says he doesn’t like the coaching staff, just the current state of the program. I’m annoyed with the Lil Rob idiot more than anything DH said.

    • ukjaybrat
      12:07 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

Arkansas fans are always bitter when we take their good players. you can’t blame a fan for being bitter when their players leave for a better opportunity, but to be fair, what Harris said WAS absolutely hypocritical because it’s the same thing.

    • nybrasky
      12:14 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

I think there would be some repercussions if Cal knew his players were chirping people from their home state on Twitter and referencing other programs. He teaches them to be above it. Think of all the hate guys like Goodwin, Monk (sense a theme, Arkansas?), Lyles got from their home states. You didn’t see any of that, right?

Football is an entirely different beast though. There are so many more players than coaches that it’s much less tight-knit and many more football players find themselves in trouble than basketball. Most coaches are just looking out for themselves anyway.

Harris should be worrying about getting himself carries this year, or else the next time we hear about him it will be his transfer to EKU.

    • memphis
      12:32 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

I completely agree that he should have just risen above it but I also think this situation is apples and oranges.

Durant left his team to go get a ring. To my knowledge, Harris never played for UK nor did he have any real affiliation to the school. He chose to go someplace that gives him better opportunities for success now and in the future. He never turned his back on UK because he was never standing in front of them. The guy commenting is criticizing him for leaving his home state. Would people not care as much if he had gone to UofL instead? It’s hard to compare a situation like this between the pros and college ranks.

But, again, none of this would be talked about if he had just sucked it up and ignored the tweet.

    • Booby Petrino
      12:38 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

“Durant left his team to go get a ring.”… Harris’ tweet…”If you wanna leave and win a ring, I respect that but don’t go join a team just because you couldn’t beat them.” So basically you agree that the first tweet that set this all of is dumb, because Durant didn’t join a team just because he couldn’t beat them.

    • Booby Petrino
      12:39 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

so basically Harris was just being dumb to begin with is my point.

    • memphis
      12:45 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

I agree that Harris’ argument about joining a team because you couldn’t beat them is really stupid. I doubt that factored into it much at all. I would put living on the west coast over living in Oklahoma City as a bigger factor than that.

When was the last time UK had a running back get drafted? Don’t say Randall Cobb. Cobb was a do everything WR. Alabama has a proven track record for recruiting talented kids, improving their game, and sending them on to a successful professional career.

As much as I had hoped that Harris would’ve chosen Kentucky, I understand why he didn’t. What Harris did was nothing like KD. Durant was already a professional and Harris simply chose the path that he believed would help him become a professional.

  12. Booby Petrino
    12:36 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

Eh, his tweet is stupid anyway. I’m sure Durant didn’t go to GS just bc he couldn’t beat them. I would think it has more to do with winning a ring, which Harris said he would respect. It could be the ring, or maybe he just wanted to get the hell out of Oklahoma. I’m sure “I’m going to play for them just bc I can’t beat them” wasn’t the reason he is changing teams.

  13. RealCatsFan
    12:37 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

Yes, it is true that UK needed much more help than just Harris, but a person with true wisdom knows better than to kick that hornets nest, lest you appear to be hypocritical. Calling out KD for going to a likely championship team just to get the ring, when he essentially did the same exact thing by choosing ‘Bama over his home stat school, is not a good look for him. IMO, it hurts the image of both – Harris and UK. He would have been much smarter to not send that tweet.

  15. jahanc2uky

Who will probably be named Alabama‚Äôs starting running back? Bo Scarbrough is the starting running back for Alabama and will be until he leaves for the pros. Harris will never start for Bama without injuries playing a part or Saban starting him against UK to rub it in BBN’s face. At the end of the day I want to hear about Boom Williams tweets, because he is BETTER than Damien Harris!

  16. Sentient Third Eye
    1:38 pm July 5, 2016 Permalink

Harris actually gives us some instructive advice there. If we continue to build and improve our talent level, he’s telling us that’s what it will take to get the next Damien Harris.

Besides, we already have a top-level talent at his position (Boom, who led the SEC in yards per carry last season), and we didn’ t make a bowl. How would Damien Harris have changed that? He’s right, and Boom’s presence proves it.

I had no problem with Harris picking Alabama over Kentucky. At the end of the day, a person has to do what is best for them, and it would be very difficult for any top notch player to turn down the Crimson Tide given their tradition, and current success.

My problem with Harris is the way he strung the Kentucky coaches and fans along for so long! He claimed he hadn’t decided on his school until the final days before he announced his decision. But after his announcement, he said that he had actually decided on Alabama while attending the Iron Bowl (which would’ve been in late November). So, he knew for basically a month and half that he was going to ‘Bama, but didn’t mind using Kentucky for tickets to several basketball games.

As far as Harris being the featured RB for the Crimson Tide this season, that’s probably not going to happen. Bo Scarbrough is a “freak” athlete, much like Derrick Henry. He is 6′-2”, 240 lbs, while Harris is 5’-11”, 205 lbs. In ‘Bama’s “pound the ball between the Tackles” approach, Scarbrough is the obvious choice. Harris will get his carries this fall, but Scarbrough will be the primary RB in Saban’s attack.

Isn’t this the same kid that posted snide tweets this past year about an sec and national championship that he did absolutely nothing to help earn… Way to ride them coat tails Damien and then act like a complete douche bag. Some fans were respectful enough to wish him the best even though he doesn’t deserve it, only for him to take shots at the entire fanbase for the comments of a few. Screw that dude, I hope Courtney shows him some though Love and Kash Daniel makes change of his punk a$$ and sends him back to that shit hole town he came from to spend the rest of his days as a limp ass Walmart greeter

What actually surprises me here is that Bama hasn’t put an end to this kind of social media slap-fighting from Mr. Harris.
I often equate their football program and our basketball program and I seriously doubt any of the BB Cats would be allowed to participate in this kind of immature, public behavior. It doesn’t matter that he was baited – he is a part of a program that is the Big Dog that should stay above this kind of thing.

Mr. Harris’ recruitment and social media efforts have shown that he does not yet have the social maturity of a star, regardless of his physical gifts. I’m surprised the university doesn’t filter these things; I know the Cats receive extensive training on such things.
