College Football is Looming…

College football is just 122 hours away from kickoff (yes, I am that desperate for football season I actually did math to figure out how far away it was) and it is safe to say fans all over the country are sitting on the edge of their seats in desperation for any sort of competitive game to be played on ESPN other than bowling. As UK fans, we are all counting down till the official start of the Mark Stoops era of Kentucky football, but I think we all know that the Cats vs the Toppers probably won’t be the best game of the first week.

In terms of first week football/non-conference match ups, this year’s slate of games is chock full of competitive teams facing up against each other with long term implications from the start. Here’s a general overview of what I believe will be the best/most entertaining games to watch next week. Which ones are you most looking forward to? Oh…and you can always count on there being at least one big upset in week one…Austin Peay over Tennessee anyone?….anyone??

Thursday August 29

North Carolina at No. 6 South Carolina–no shirt, no shoes, no problem for Steve Spurrier

Ole Miss at Vanderbilt–battle of two up and coming teams in the SEC led by coaches who have found immediate success

Saturday August 31

Rice at No. 7 Texas A&M–will Johnny Football be too tired to play?

Mississippi State at. No. 13 Oklahoma State–Dan Mullen’s cowbell squad takes on the Big 12 favorites

No. 1 Alabama vs Virginia Tech–from Atlanta, Nick Saban will be as robotic as ever

No. 5 Georgia at No. 8 Clemson–first College Gameday site of the year, bet ya Corso will pick the Tigers

No. 12 LSU vs No. 20 TCU–from the Jerry Dome, see ya in December UK basketball

No. 22 Northwestern at California–Wildcats a great example of a school having continued success in football that shouldn’t

Personally, I am a homer for the SEC so I’ll be rooting hard for all of our conference brethren. Oh…and how could I forget?

Kentucky vs Western Kentucky–seven days and three hours away…#BeatWestern

Apart from some prime time games, there are also some big story lines on tap for this college football season. How will the Johnny Football saga unfold? Can Alabama win an unprecedented third straight national championship? Will the SEC once again rule the nation? Will Ohio State follow up on their undefeated probation year with more Urban Meyer domination? We shall see….
