One of the SEC’s leading minds believes Chris Rodriguez will become a household name in 2020.
Friday afternoon Cole Cubelic of the SEC Network shared his Top Five SEC Offensive Breakthrough Players ahead of the 2020 season. Coming in at No. 3 is Kentucky running back Chris Rodriguez.
One portion of Kentucky’s three-headed monster at running back, he split carries with A.J. Rose and Kavosiey Smoke as a redshirt freshman. As the physical toll of the season wore on others, Rodriguez grew stronger.
Kentucky’s bruiser in the backfield recorded 402 yards and five touchdowns in the final five games of the season, including a pair of 100+ yard games against Vanderbilt and Louisville. In the month of November alone Rodriguez averaged 9.1 yards per carry.
Many see the McDonough, GA native as the perfect power option in Eddie Gran’s offense. In his late-season offensive explosion Rodriguez proved that he’s not a one-trick pony by showing off breakaway speed on more than one occasion, highlighted by a 64-yard touchdown against Louisville.
Gran has a luxury of riches in his running back room this fall. Who will end up getting the most carries? If Rodriguez plays like he did at the end of the 2019 season, Gran will not be able to keep him off the field.
