CBS’ Gary Danielson blames UK Football’s woes on the basketball program

During the second half of today’s embarrassing loss, CBS’ Gary Danielson took the lazy route and blamed the Kentucky football program’s woes on the basketball team, insinuating that because UK is a “basketball school,” the football team will never succeed.

“Verne, you know Kentucky has always been known as a basketball school, right, and it’s so hard to change the culture, right?” Danielson said. “It is. Remember 2007 when we went to that game and we saw maybe the best game when Kentucky and Andre Woodson beat LSU in that football game? We got in the car after the game and biggest maybe Kentucky win in years and we’re listening to the postgame show and the first call comes in and they say, ‘I wanna congratulate the boys, but I wanna know how Billy Gillispie and that basketball team are doing this year.’ First call after the biggest football win of the year. That’s what Mark Stoops has to deal with. It’s a basketball school first and he has to succeed within that.”

A little later, Verne Lundquist circled back to the topic by telling a story about meeting a UK fan in Steamboat Springs, and when she asked him how he thought the Cats would do, he thought she was talking about football when she was actually talking about basketball. This gave Danielson another excuse to take the low road.

“That’s the battle,” he said. “Changing the culture.”

With all due respect to Danielson, I am tired of this argument. It’s time for people to stop blaming basketball for football’s problems. UK has put considerable money and effort into the football program in recent years, and in no way did basketball’s success contribute to today’s pathetic performance. In year four of the Mark Stoops era, Kentucky football has the best facilities it’s ever had, (arguably) great talent, and more support from fans than they’ve earned; however, they keep singing the same old song. And it’s not John Calipari or the fans’ fault.

Look at my post in the last thread. That’s exactly what I said. As long as Calipari is here, UK football will always be second tier at UK.

Wrong. As long as UK football is humiliating, we will be proud of UK Basketball and Coach Cal. Why wouldn’t we be proud of basketball over football? Stoops is getting blown out everywhere he plays … 1,084 yards and 89 points given up by UK in two games. His ex-OC embarrassed him in our house. His prior OC Neal Brown took his Troy team into Clemson today at Death Valley and went toe-to-toe with them, and should have won. I was so proud of them. Brown is a coach. He has a great defensive coordinator. D.J. Eliot was not and is not cut out to be a defensive coordinator, but he is Stoops’ close friend. Nonetheless, Cal has had more UK players drafted in the top 10 than the football team has wins under Stoops. We, like most sane people, are proud of positive results, not affirmations, apologies, and daydreams. Barnhart is the one who is UK Basketball-only. Unlike other schools who quickly realize mistakes, he gives very long leashes to the football and women’s basketball coaches — and the programs are in shambles and an embarrassment to the fanbase. When the basketball was that way under Billy G., it took him just two seasons to do the right thing. Louisville makes me sick, but I will admit that their A.D. knows what he is doing as they are good in everything — men’s and women’s basketball, football, baseball, softball, etc. It is tough to admit, and even tougher to watch their success.

We have never been able to be proud of our football team with the exception of literally nine seasons of our 124 seasons of football in which UK won 8 or more games … and only five of those have been since 1977. Moreover, if you are like me, you were only alive for two of those seasons! Look at Duke they’ve won a national title in basketball in the fast few years AND played for the ACC Football Championship. DUKE! Duke football in the past three years has won 8, 9, and 10 football games! UK has won 10 or more football games only twice in school history: 1977 and 1950. You don’t think UK wouldn’t kill to be a “football school,” to go on the road in the SEC and beat Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, etc.? None of this is Cal’s fault, Pitino’s fault, Joe B.’s fault, Rupp’s fault. It’s the fault of garbage football coaches who only get head coaching jobs at UK.

You’re contradicting what you said in this post and in the other thread. I don’t disagree with anything you just wrote. Just saying, basketball isn’t the reason UK football sucks. Losing might have been more tolerable because of our success in basketball but that isn’t an excuse for the multiple losing seasons. It is the AD and football coaches. Blaming Cal or the basketball tradition is just dumb. As you mentioned, if Duke can do it, we could & should as well.

I’m with you TT……there has been more than enough investment in the UK football program to be this pathetic……and it’s not the basketball program’s fault, be accountable. Either fix it with players and coaches that have the will and talent to do so (the ones we have now do not), or continue to suck.

I spent the morning at the new training and practice facility. If there are schools with a superior OVERALL facility I want to see it. UK has invested big time in this program and it’s time to see returns on that investment. Sad to say, I don’t believe this staff will get it done. I bought season tickets when Commonwealth was built and have been a loyal fan and contributor since, so please spare me the ‘root for another school’ or ‘your not a real fan’ comebacks.

I told my wife when that a**hole started talking smack about being a basketball school that any recruit watching this would rethink coming to UK. I’m surprised he didn’t go down the Rupp was a racist well also. The guy should be reprimanded for his comments.

The game was over by the second quarter. Danielson and Verne tried to fill time and keep interest. However, they made dumb comments about UK fans. I find it hard to believe either of these incidents actually happened. Blaming the fans is stupid. UK football fans have been more than loyal to this program. Using basketball success as a reason for losses is foolish.

I’m sick and tired of the UK is a basketball school. They only say that because the football team is terrible. The fans have been loyal even through the garbage. WE WANT a football team. If anything, our athletic administration is inept in their hiring and standards of the football team — it is they who favor basketball only. If the fan base is too proud of basketball, it’s because that is all we have to be proud about. My phone is blowing up with non-UK fans taunting and ribbing me about UK football after this newest humiliation. Why would we ask people like Verne Lundquist about football? We don’t want to be publicly embarrassed.

Anyhow, I can name plenty of schools that are great, or good, in both football and basketball, including that team that just destroyed us for the 30th year in a row! Florida has more national championships in BASKETBALL than we do in the past decade, let alone, obviously, football. Louisville is great at both basketball and football. As is North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Arizona, Washington, Cal, Baylor, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Michigan. Sadly, even Duke (DUKE!) is good in both now; Duke played for the ACC title game in 2013 and have won 8, 9, and 10 games the last three years in football.

We are awful in football because our coaches are awful and our athletic department decision-makers are fine with that. We, the fans, are not. When we look around and see teams turning around quickly like Houston, we are jealous and furious. Our A.D. is not, clearly.

With no respect to Danielson, he’s an idiot. like that fake Hill Billy at the top of the page. There is no causality between Cal’s success or UK’s basketball success historically and the football program’s lethargy. I understand he was struggling with a boring product; but, that does not excuse a total fallacy.

You are exactly right. The fans have pretty much always filled the stands. They have always purchased every bowl ticket possible even though all the bowl invitations have been terrible. They travel to road games.

Yes we finally have good facilities.

The problem is in hiring talent and our AD is 100% to blame for that. I didn’t say recruiting talent. I said hiring it. Mitch either doesn’t want to or is not capable of hiring an SEC caliber football coach. He is more concerned with making sure all the non-revenue sports are taken care of.

There is no culture issue. There is an Athletic Director issue. #FireMitch

He wasn’t blaming Cal or the basketball program. Instead, he was taking a shot at the fanbase. He cited an example of when we upset #1 LSU, he and Vern were going to the airport and on the call in show one of the first callers asked a question about basketball. His point is that, in the UK fans mind, basketball will always be first and football an after thought. Aside from looking for filler material to discuss during a blowout game they Should’ve cut away from, i agree with his point. CWS is not an intimidating environment at all for road teams. The visiting teams know all they have to do is score a few points and the mood in the place turns against the home team. Ever been in a situation where you knew everyone was looking at you and waiting for you to fail? C’mon, you probably playing youth sports and were on the foul line once or at the plate trying to get a hit in baseball or trying to make a six foot putt in the club tourney……you can feel people watching and get the vibe of whether or not they think you will fail. Now imagine what it’s like when it’s 55 thousand people watching you expecting failure. (Be honest with yourself and admit you didn’t have confidence last week at halftime) Danielson was spot on in a way. We have come to expect failure in football. This is what Stoops alluded to when he said it’s tough to change a culture. Hell, this very blog confirms his point. We are so quick to stand up for basketball and tell people to F off when they challenge it. Just as we are so quick to turn on our own football program when times are tough.
