BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Your Favorite UK-UL Game?

It’s amazing the think but the modern UK-UL series is quickly approaching it’s 20th anniversary, and in that time there have been some real classic games.  Both schools have wins that their fans will forever remember, but when it comes to my favorite game in the series, it is actually the first one held on enemy turf: the opening of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in 1998.  It was an incredibly hot day in the state that day, but no one was hotter than Tim Couch, who threw for an unofficial 829 yards and 14 touchdowns.  While those stats might not be official, the final score was:

Kentucky 68, Louisville 34

68 points.  On your chief rival’s opening of their brand new field.  Louisville might be able to say they hold an advantage in the overall series.  But I do think it is cool to FOREVER be able to claim to have won the first ever game on their home turf.  And not just win the game, but win the game by 34 points.  And absolutely run it up on them, like you should do on a rival.  I am not sure the Air Raid offense under Mumme ever worked better than it did that day, but there is no doubt that it was the sweetest win of the Mumme era.  And that includes beating Alabama in my opinion.  So, that is my favorite UK-UL win, what it yours?

…GOT LOOSE! That was probably the most successful football season that UK fans under the age of 50 can remember. Beating #1 and eventual National Champion LSU, being as high as 8 in the BCS standings…it was a magical year and it all started when Stevie got loose and UK beat top 10 ranked Louisville, causing their season to go in the opposite direction.

Stevie got loose! And also spoiling Dave Ragone’s ridiculous Heisman hype in 2002 I believe (or 03).

It’s a toss up for me between the ’07 Louisville and ’07 LSU games. I remember there was an ESPN poll in the days leading up to the UK-LSU game weekend asking which upset was most liekly to happen. The entire map was one color, with most of the nation picking one upset. But then there was Kentucky, the lone blue state on the map with BBN picking us to upset LSU. That was the loudest game of any sport that I’ve been too.

9-14-2013, My favorite , Ky 28 cards 27, Smith to Whitlow for 15 yards and Whitlow running the other 30 yards for the win. What a game.

I have to agree with everyone, it was 2007. I ruined a friendly get-together of uninterested people down in North Carolina by screaming at the tv the whole game and then going nuts when Stevie got loose. And I’m not sorry that I’m not sorry.

Stevie got loose. I will also tell you my favorite cartoon wildcat would be one NOT wearing Carolina blue? Wth?! Why do those colors show up so much in older material? Was everyone color blind in the 70’s and 80’s or just stupid? Or is that newer than that? Regardless, wth?!

Stevie getting loose was great without a doubt and the first drubbing on their field will always be special. But, I do like the Morris win when they had the bobblehead heisman promotion.

    Kentucky – 68
    Louisville – 34

    We could have scored 80!

I don’t live in Kentucky (although my family does!) and we don’t really follow football at all, so I had no idea that their football stadium was called “Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.” I’m dying, that is too funny.

My favorite UK/UL win was 2013 in Commonwealth, when Mark Stoops and his first team destroyed the UL hopes for a National Championship game and ended the Teddy Bridgewater for Heismann talk.
