BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Tuesday Morning Defensive Breakdown

Every Tuesday I provide the breakdown of the UK defense from the previous weekend in down and distance scenarios.  Against Mississippi State, lots of negatives can be pointed out.  A porous rush defense doomed the Cats as well as poor 3rd down defense.  The offense also didn’t do any favors for the Cats but the defense looked flat most of the game.  Here is the analysis from Saturday:

1st Down
Run: 16 rushes for 50 yards, 2 TD

Pass: 11-13, 94 yards, 1 INT

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 49 rushes for 166 yards, 3 TD (1 fumble recovery)
Pass: 44-66, 499 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT, 1 sack (1 fumble recovery)

Breakdown: The rush defense was actually pretty good on 1st down with both touchdowns short yardage situations.  Overall, just over 3 yards a carry is awesome.  But the pass defense was pretty poor outside of one interception.  MSU’s quarterback picked apart the UK secondary for 6-9 yard gains consistently.  For the season, UK has really struggled against the pass on 1st down.

2nd Down
Run: 16 rushes for 146 yards, 1 TD

Pass: 3-4, 33 yards, 1 sack

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 47 rushes for 280 yards, 4 TD
Pass: 20-35, 241 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT, 4 sacks

Breakdown: Absolutely horrid run defense here and the Bulldogs knew it, running 16 of their 21 plays on the ground.  And UK has just been bad against the run all season on 2nd down for some reason.  Against the pass, UK has done pretty well, forcing three turnovers and 4 sacks.  But teams have absolutely gashed UK on the ground.

3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Run: 1 rush for 11 yards (converted 0 of 1)

Pass: 1-2, 25 yards, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery (converted 1 of 3)

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 10 rushes for 155 yards, 2 TD (converted 5 of 10)
Pass: 12-18, 136 yards, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery (converted 8 of 19)

Breakdown: Much better than the first three games with MSU only converting once through the air.  These percentages are more what you have to have to get off the field.

3rd Down and Short (5 yards or fewer)
Run: 3 rushes for 54 yards (converted 3 of 3)
Pass: 2-3, 28 yards (converted 2 of 3)

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 9 rushes for 73 yards (converted 5 of 9)
Pass: 5-8, 85 yards, 2 sacks (converted 5 of 10)

Breakdown: UK had a couple opportunities to make big stops here and failed over and over.  And while these chances do not favor the defense, UK had been really good this season up to Saturday.  The percentages are still really good this year but hopefully Saturday was just an anomaly.
